wilko Old-Timey Member Posted August 12, 2019 Posted August 12, 2019 Oh I agree. If it's up to me Drury is non-tendered in the offseason, McKinney and Tellez are optioned and serve as AAA injury backup, and Urena is DFA'd. Tellez is mashing in AAA!
Abomination Old-Timey Member Posted August 12, 2019 Posted August 12, 2019 Not that he was even close to it, but has the only shortstop that we have had that was elite Tony Fernandez? I know that Alex Gonzalez and Eddie Zoskey were highly thought of, but in our history we've only had one elite shortstop. Basically. Scutaro put up two really good years, and a few other people sprinkled in the odd one.
Ian Gifford Verified Member Posted August 12, 2019 Posted August 12, 2019 Galvis is a good baseball player, jays too cheap to keep him, unless he asked for the freedom, the move is garbage...... Shapiro and Atkins must go.....is Rodgers really that cheap, something tells me there is an option in the open market that is cheaper than Atkins and Shapiro…...and please do we not see enough evidence to understand Antopoulos should of been retained, Atlanta on the cusp......Atkins really: Hernandez (avg.), Mckinny and Drury (avg.); 2 iffy prospects for Stroman....and Fisher (below avg. OF) for Sanchez...…..and please may we not forget that Guerrero was signed by Anthopoulos…….what has Atkins done worth any credit? Atkins is Shapiro's guy...…. so they both must!
Thaddeus Malice Verified Member Posted August 12, 2019 Posted August 12, 2019 You can't even make a credible argument that a front office makes poor decisions without an understanding of the information they had at the time of the decision. Poor results and poor decisions are 2 different things. Ever decision has a probability of poor results, no matter how good the decision is. s***ing on someone who made a good decision, but got unlucky with a poor result is incredibly shortsighted. If Galvis told the FO he wasn't going to accept a backup role and wasn't going to work with the young infielders....would you still want to keep someone like that around just so they could give you 1.5 WAR over 650 PA's? We don't and probably will never know all the circumstances behind this, so just accept it for what it is. So when is the time when you can criticize a front office decision exactly? We will never have access to the same information as the front office. Given the information gap, does that mean there is literally never a time to make a credible argument against a front office decision? What's the bar here for making an argument? Just doesn't make sense to me. Especially weird since the entire function of a message board is to discuss moves made by a front office and to often argue about said moves.

Brownie19 Old-Timey Member Posted August 12, 2019 Posted August 12, 2019 Depends on your definition of elite but Reyes was like a top 3 or 4 SS in baseball in 2014. Good call. Reyes was such an exciting player in his prime.
Olerud363 Old-Timey Member Posted August 12, 2019 Posted August 12, 2019 What he's trying to say is that we should have hired a different Shapiro underling like Mike Hazen. Also don't forget.... that Bichette was signed by one of AAs guys... and then they fired him... that is Shapiro and Atkins... after signing Bichtte.... so what do we have??.... AA essentially signed Guerrero and Bichette... great ones along the line of Ronald Acuna... and who did Shapiro sign??... Biggio and Derek Fisher... Biggio is really struggling... And Fisher hasn't done anything in several chances... and what is Sanchez doing??.... Well look it up... 2-0 with a no hitter and on track for another ERA title.... well not this year, but Houston fixed him so maybe next... I think that at some point this all has to end... maybe find the next AA to get some players to go with Guerrero and Bichette

They have final say and selected Bo. Also, you fail to even mention Pearson, Groshans, Pardinho, Manoah, etc. Most of these guys and, likely, SWR will all be top 100 guys heading into 2020.

Deadpool Old-Timey Member Posted August 12, 2019 Posted August 12, 2019 Why is this nothing move attracting newbies to the board? I had no idea there was such a large fan-base for a switch hitting Ryan Goins with dreads.
GeorgiaPeach Verified Member Posted August 12, 2019 Posted August 12, 2019 I liked having Galvis. Thought he'd be a great guy to have on the bench next year. Can we please at least dump Smoak too Why would a player who has never been a bench player in the majors be fine with being a bench player on a non-playoff team?
Stangstag Old-Timey Member Posted August 12, 2019 Posted August 12, 2019 Why would a player who has never been a bench player in the majors be fine with being a bench player on a non-playoff team? Exactly. Im not saying he ISN’T a bench player or wouldn’t be great in that role, but maybe he doesn’t feel like he’s a bench piece quite yet. Especially not on a 90 loss team
GeorgiaPeach Verified Member Posted August 12, 2019 Posted August 12, 2019 To be fair - Maile was coming off a 2.2 WAR season. He was a top 10 or 12 catcher in all of baseball in 2018. Ya!!! Who the heck is Danny Jansen to complain about backing up Luke Maile. He's bloody rookie, shut your mouth and know your role Danny.
BTS Community Moderator Posted August 12, 2019 Posted August 12, 2019 Why would a player who has never been a bench player in the majors be fine with being a bench player on a non-playoff team? Who gives a s*** what he’s fine with? Teams are supposed to keep giving 1-2 win player everyday ABs because it will upset him if he gets his playing time reduced? Is it just Galvis that should dictate his own playing time, or should that luxury be afforded to everyone?
saskjayfan Old-Timey Member Posted August 12, 2019 Posted August 12, 2019 not really bothered by losing Galvis, although he put in good year for us, but I would have rather seen Alford called up.

GeorgiaPeach Verified Member Posted August 12, 2019 Posted August 12, 2019 Sure if they want to suck again next season just put Urena on the bench. Would be nice knowing when we rest a regular we have someone somewhat capable to replace them in that game. Houston has a lot of that. It looks fun. Well they aren't sniffing the playoffs in 2020.

Perhaps the FO believes keeping him as a bench player could affect team chemistry or player development for their rookies.
BTS Community Moderator Posted August 12, 2019 Posted August 12, 2019 Who said he was upset? The semantic difference between “not fine with” and “upset about” is a very interesting topic of discussion that we should definitely pursue.

How come good teams never worry about these things when they have good players playing less than they’d play on bad teams?
