Deadpool Old-Timey Member Posted September 10, 2019 Posted September 10, 2019 The era of Blue Jays catchers of the future that ended up being absolute trash: Diaz, Quiroz, Curtis Thigpen, Kevin Cash, JPA. All hyped, all complete dumpster fires. It's kinda hilarious that Gregg Zaun ended up being the best Blue Jays catcher of the aughts.
Boxcar Old-Timey Member Posted September 10, 2019 Posted September 10, 2019 It's kinda hilarious that Gregg Zaun ended up being the best Blue Jays catcher of the aughts. Zaun was a pretty underrated player. He was pretty good.
Frag Verified Member Posted September 10, 2019 Posted September 10, 2019 Best Jays catchers by decade: 70s: Alan Ashby (2.2 fWAR) 80s: Ernie Whitt (22.0 fWAR) 90s: Pat Borders (4.2 fWAR) 00s: Gregg Zaun (8.1 fWAR) 10s: Russell Martin (11.3 fWAR) The Jays never really had an elite catcher on their team (Martin possibly being the exception). Whitt was good, but I think Martin was better in his 4 years here.
Frag Verified Member Posted September 10, 2019 Posted September 10, 2019 The opposite seems to be true about their 1B: 70s: Ron Fairly (2.0 fWAR) 80s: Fred McGriff (14.3 fWAR) 90s: John Olerud (23.0 fWAR) 00s: Carlos Delgado (23.3 fWAR) 10s: Edwin Encarnacion (23.1 fWAR) Hot damn!

And 20s with Vlad jr should continue that trend

Boxcar Old-Timey Member Posted September 11, 2019 Posted September 11, 2019 Assuming he doesn't move straight to DH. I like the way you think

They only go back to 2008 though, so if you assume he had similar skills in his younger years, he put up a lot more value than his current WAR total. In the ~1500 innings where his framing was measured by Fangraphs he was worth +38 runs. Just to put a playing time frame of reference to that inning amount, Danny Jansen has caught 793 innings this year.
The Cats Ass Old-Timey Member Posted September 11, 2019 Posted September 11, 2019 Being a good negotiator and good talent evaluator are two different things. Atkins might have the second trait which helps to offset the lack of the first but that still doesn't excuse him not having it. At that point in time, the consensus was that he overpaid. If he was dancing like some dude standing outside a public stall waiting to take a major leak at the chance to get those two guys, it's not a good thing. Instead of being happy with Atkins, the team should be aiming for Cashman-level of outcomes. Can you give us a full rundown of how the negotiations went? No, didn't think so. Who's to say the Met's didn't start off absolutely refusing to include SWR.. And who really cares what the consensus says. The Jays personal scouts would have scouted and looked into SWR and Kay way more than some joe blow from ESPN or MLB.com.

Krylian Old-Timey Member Posted September 15, 2019 Posted September 15, 2019 Spit or swallow? Always swallow. If you're gonna spit, it's not even worth doing.
saskjayfan Old-Timey Member Posted September 18, 2019 Posted September 18, 2019 I wonder if we’ll get lucky enough to have fisher miss time due to injury
Krylian Old-Timey Member Posted September 18, 2019 Posted September 18, 2019 I wonder if we’ll get lucky enough to have fisher miss time due to injury Fisher being decapitated is probably the only way we lose this deal.
Spanky99 Old-Timey Member Posted September 19, 2019 Posted September 19, 2019 I wonder if we’ll get lucky enough to have fisher miss time due to injury Or maybe we get, you know lucky with Fisher putting it together.
Krylian Old-Timey Member Posted September 19, 2019 Posted September 19, 2019 Or maybe we get, you know lucky with Fisher putting it together. No. It's already decided that Fisher must suck.
Spanky99 Old-Timey Member Posted September 19, 2019 Posted September 19, 2019 No. It's already decided that Fisher must suck. lol... that's f***ed up hoping injury on a guy for reasons, likely Alford not getting appearances.
saskjayfan Old-Timey Member Posted September 19, 2019 Posted September 19, 2019 lol... that's f***ed up hoping injury on a guy for reasons, likely Alford not getting appearances. I'm not wishing injury on anyone. It was a joke. Fisher f***ing blows though. Alford isn't going to be a blue jays come spring training. I've said it numerous times.
Jimcanuck Old-Timey Member Posted September 19, 2019 Posted September 19, 2019 If the BJs are planning to trade Alford this offseason, you would expect him to be playing.
Laika Community Moderator Posted September 19, 2019 Posted September 19, 2019 If the BJs are planning to trade Alford this offseason, you would expect him to be playing. Unless they think he's a turd. It would be counter-productive to showcase a turd, Jim.
Todd Van Anus Verified Member Posted September 19, 2019 Posted September 19, 2019 Alford is good, he just can't stay healthy. Plus the jays have too many young OFs so someone might need to go. Depending on how other teams evaluate him, maybe we can get a solid pitching prospect for him.
Jimcanuck Old-Timey Member Posted September 19, 2019 Posted September 19, 2019 Unless they think he's a turd. It would be counter-productive to showcase a turd, Jim. Even a turd can have a hot streak. We saw this with DSJ
Laika Community Moderator Posted September 19, 2019 Posted September 19, 2019 Even a turd can have a hot streak. We saw this with DSJ Uh-huh. Well Dwight proves my point, really. He's at -1 WAR now. The Orioles wanted him before 2019 but after his MLB showcase I doubt even the O's will want to roster him in 2020, if they can help it.
