jaysguy44 Old-Timey Member Posted July 29, 2019 Posted July 29, 2019 I think it's already been asked, but I didn't see any replies. Where do you expect these 2 guys to slot in the Jays prospect rankings?

Slade Old-Timey Member Posted July 29, 2019 Posted July 29, 2019 No quite what I was expecting but this is a good trade. Kay reminds me a lot of Borucki with a wicked curve and SWR will be a top 100 prospect soon.
NY Mets Fan Verified Member Posted July 29, 2019 Posted July 29, 2019 Mets fans seem to be really upset at this trade...?? Hi, Mets fan here. Yes, mets fans are on average 80/20 against this trade. One reason is, the mets fans want the team to rebuild, not buy, so, that's part of it. Another, is, reading this thread and reading mets threads, the views on how good Stroman is varies depending on the board. You guys see him as a #1 type. Mets fans see him as a guy who's been hot lately, due for a correction downwards, and only 1 year of control past this one, which makes little sense for a losing team. 3.52 FIP this year, 3.91 and 3.90 last 2 years might be closer to a #2 starter. Still good, not an ace. Mets fans also LOVE SWR, and, 19 year old in low A - there's some risk there, but he's one of our favorite pitchers. Probably #1 overall until Allen gets a better look, by fan ranking. Brodie has also hurt us by being too eager to trade prospects so him doing it again . . . met with some concern from fans, and especially among fans with their hearts set on rebuilding. I think this is a wait & see. If Stroman pitches like an ace for us, 2019 and 2020, mets stole him from you. If he doesn't, and if in 2 years, SWR is a top 40 prospect in all of baseball, you didn't do so bad. Some media guys like Kay more than others. I think he's a borderline guy, better than AAAA certainly, but could be a #4/#5 starter, which isn't all that interesting and he's a work in progress, but he was apparently pitching with a partial tear in college. He's added about 2 MPH since returning from TJ and he's a more interesting prospect than he was. Also, lefty. Lefty helps. Reading this board, I see your point. I get you guys wanting more. I remember Marlins fans being disappointed in the return the mets gave them for AJ Ramos, at the time, their closer. Then Ramos proceeded to pitch his way out of baseball after joining the mets. He was awful. Not that the prospects the Fish got were any better, but that's how it works sometimes. I think there's some wait and see in a lot of trades. Maybe it works out for both our teams. / / / and as a Yankee hater, I really do come in peace.

Buyers refusing to overpay. Jays, even with three days to deadline, evidently felt Kay and Woods-Richardson were best market would bear. -Rosenthal

All we wanted was a mediocre to average haul.

saskjayfan Old-Timey Member Posted July 29, 2019 Posted July 29, 2019 This trade was absolute garbage. I hope they get 5K fans out next game. This team is unwatchable for the next 3 years.
Abomination Old-Timey Member Posted July 29, 2019 Posted July 29, 2019 FFS, apparently we're also paying part of Stroman's salary on top of that.
Slade Old-Timey Member Posted July 29, 2019 Posted July 29, 2019 BA write up on both guys. Anthony Kay, LHP Age: 24 The Mets' first-round pick in 2016, Kay didn't pitch after signing due to an elbow injury and missed all of 2017 after having Tommy John surgery. He returned last year and has flown up the system, reaching Triple-A this year in just his second season on the mound. Kay is a power lefthander with a fastball that sits at 93 mph and regularly reaches 95-96 mph. He complements his fastball with a curveball he can land to both sides of the plate and a changeup that plays well against righthanded hitters with sink at the bottom of the zone. Kay's arsenal is that of a mid-rotation starter or better, but his control and command are inconsistent and make him a back-end starter in the eyes of most evaluators. He is nearly major league ready and could make his debut this year. Simeon Woods-Richardson, RHP Age: 18 The Mets' second-round pick last year, Woods-Richardson made his full-season debut this year and earned raves from scouts as one of the best pitchers in the low Class A South Atlantic League despite a pedestrian 4.25 ERA. Woods-Richardson is a 6-foot-3 power righthander who pounds the strike zone with his power arsenal. His four-seam fastball reaches 95-96 mph and his cutter sits at 92 mph, giving him two hard offerings to front his four-pitch mix. His 12-to-6 breaking ball has hard downward action and shows the potential to be an impact pitch, and his changeup flashes average. Woods-Richardson struggles leaving the ball up and gets hit as a result sometimes, but evaluators feel he could be an impact starter once he learns to work the edges of the strike zone. He earns wide praise for his fearless, bulldog mentality on the mound and aggressiveness in attacking hitters.

AdamGreenwood Old-Timey Member Posted July 29, 2019 Posted July 29, 2019 This trade was all about the Jays getting Woods-Richardson. Kay was just a throw-in. Jays are expecting ace-like stuff out of Woods-Richardson in 2021, which fits in well with our timelines.

Ok the koolaid has been mixed with some very strong moonshine.
John Balkabella Verified Member Posted July 29, 2019 Posted July 29, 2019 Coupla thoughts: Our minds should be eased somewhat by Shi stating Kay is a big strong guy. Will give Tabbie something to drool over. Jays lost the risk premium in this trade big time. Maybe 2024 is the year the Jays are looking to compete. That’s disappointing. I liked Stroman. Don’t mind a little personality, and at the very least, you cannot argue that he didn’t make the most of his talent. Ross Atkins is a nerd. Only hired because he’s a little bit worse than Shapiro in faking a smile. Yeah, Shapiro is busy doing other things, such as other things. Gimme a f***in break. Dunedin. Whoopdedoo. That in three years? Nuff said, for now.

He's basically at the same place as Mackenzie Gore was at a younger age last year I don't think anyone would be surprised to see Gore in majors in 2020. Mid-Season 2021 seems do-able if he progresses.

Mid-Season 2021 seems do-able if he progresses. why are you taking a best case scenario and a pitcher that has one more year of develop and information on and drawing the comparison? Vlad is 20 years old. He had much higher pedigree in terms of his perceived value as a baseball player on the position side at the same age...he's 20 now. Did he put up a 6 win season. The idea that this kid is going to be at the majors and pitching like an ace at 20 is ridiculous. Yes there is an extremely low percentage that it could happen, but to throw it out there like it's reasonable probably is dumn.
Angrioter Old-Timey Member Posted July 29, 2019 Posted July 29, 2019 Simeon Woods-Richardson looks like Aaron Sanchez 8 years ago
Grant77 Old-Timey Member Posted July 29, 2019 Posted July 29, 2019 Historically weak I'm no fan of this deal but give me a break. Tell me the last time a trade of a pitcher as good as Stroman with additional control got only 2 prospects, none of whom are current top 100 prospects or decent major leaguers. Trades this bad rarely happen. It wouldn't shock me if it hasn't happened this decade.

Currently on the cusp after being bumped off by the draft guys (and poor start to AAA). Simeon Woods-Richardson has potential, could be a future top 100 guy. Could see a Deivi Garcia type of helium by next year. Both his FB and curve looks legit and has velo uptick, also very young for level like Garcia. His size is better than Deivi.
