jaysguy44 Old-Timey Member Posted August 27, 2019 Posted August 27, 2019 I'm really hoping for Crews, seems like the type of player that would fit this club perfectly in the future.
TheOutsider Verified Member Posted August 28, 2019 Posted August 28, 2019 Putting Austin Martin at 12 seems kinda crazy? Hitting .432/.514/.641 in the SEC should get you into the top 5, most likely? Obviously we don't know if he'll have a down season next year, but at this point in time I have a hard time believing that there are seven high schoolers that are better picks than Martin.
TheHurl Site Manager Posted August 28, 2019 Posted August 28, 2019 I want Blaze Jordan, knowing absolutely nothing about him. He will be just 17 when drafted too. He is such a fascinating guy, hitting 500 ft. HR's at 13. Made his varsity team in Grade 8. Reclassified to be drafted early. He'll be scrutinized more than any player in the draft but in the end his name is Blaze and you just have to take him. First basemen going 1-2 would be amazing.

jaysguy44 Old-Timey Member Posted August 29, 2019 Posted August 29, 2019 I haven't followed the drafts super closely in the past. It seems like this years top 10 is really stacked compared to the past few drafts though, is that the consensus?

jaysguy44 Old-Timey Member Posted September 22, 2019 Posted September 22, 2019 So it looks like Tork and Hancock are a lock for the top 2, correct? Is there a consensus top 4-5-6 right now? Or is it all still up in the air? Looks like it's almost a guarantee we will be picking at #5.

TheOutsider Verified Member Posted September 23, 2019 Posted September 23, 2019 Looks like it's almost a guarantee we will be picking at #5. I don't know, the Pirates may never win again, so the Jays might need to go 2-4 or worse, and they're facing the Orioles...

The best player in the draft will go 5th overall and the Jays will end up picking 6th. This is what it feels like to be a Jays fan.
Mikeleelop Verified Member Posted September 25, 2019 Posted September 25, 2019 after the loss Tues night the magic number to clinch 5 draft spot is 2. a total of 2 jays losses plus Pirate wins, or Seattle wins. 1 jays loss or white sox win eliminates white sox from 5th draft spot

They are both within 1 game of Oak now for wild card. Will make TB games with Jays this weekend meaningful to the Rays. Hope Pirates can sneek another win vs Cubs now that they are eliminated
Ray Verified Member Posted September 25, 2019 Posted September 25, 2019 While I’m not generally a fan of tanking for high picks, what will be really nice is having an insane amount of draft pool money. The Tigers, who picked 5th last season, for instance had $10.5M. That will go an incredibly long way for a front office like ours who’s shown themselves to be more than capable when it comes to drafting well and drafting deep.

I'm a fan of tanking, but I understand that it's different in baseball. That said, when there's really nothing left to play for (and there hasn't been for awhile), locking up a higher pick and more pool money can only help. What does winning 8 of your last 10 really do at this point in the season? Lock up #5 and give the scouts something juicy to work with.
jaysguy44 Old-Timey Member Posted September 26, 2019 Posted September 26, 2019 Nice, another Pirates win. We should definitely be picking at #5 now, but it's not for certain yet.

jaysguy44 Old-Timey Member Posted September 26, 2019 Posted September 26, 2019 Blaze Jordan it is, lol. I'm genuinely curious, why is there so much love for Jordan? Every mock draft I've seen he seems to be ranked no where near the top 5, obviously lots can change though.

Probably ends up at 1B.
Slade Old-Timey Member Posted September 27, 2019 Posted September 27, 2019 He's just got a high profile right now compared to everyone else. I wouldn't really read into it at the moment, I don't even think he's top 5 of all prep players.

Rusty_Savage Verified Member Posted September 28, 2019 Posted September 28, 2019 With the loss and the Mariners win we are two back with two to play. How does it work if we tie? Season series. I'm all aboard the Austin Martin train but I don't think he will be there when we pick

I'm all aboard the Austin Martin train but I don't think he will be there when we pick I just looked that up and it seems it's last years record... And Mariners won 89 last year... so unless I am overlooking something it looks like it is 5th pick.
Slade Old-Timey Member Posted September 28, 2019 Posted September 28, 2019 As of last night we clenched the 5th pick. http://www.tankathon.com/mlb

This is what it feels like to be a Jays fan. Well Jays clinched 5th last night, so now the best player in the draft will be going 6th... And that player will have a solid but not spectacular minor league career, while our pick will hit .350 in the minors, but oddly dissapoint in the majors... Plus who-ever the Yankees pick at 29 will be the 3rd best player in the draft and way out perform our guy... That's what it's like to be a Jays fan!

I s*** you not... this is what happened last time we had a pick like this (6th) 1. Ryan Braun and Zimmerman were picked just ahead. 2. Tulo (good Tulo) was picked just behind. 3. The Red Sox got a really good player (Ellsbury) with their 23rd pick. Jays got Ricky Romero... the only reason he didn't dissapoint in the majors, was that his minor league career was terrible, after teasing in the majors for a couple of years, he then imploded spectacularly kind of at the moment Jays wanted to contend.

I know... but it's not like I'm complaining that the Jays chose Chad Jenkins instead of Mike Trout. Maybe I'm misremembering, but the Romero pick came out of nowhere didn't it?? Didn't Riccardi override the scouts? Obviously guys miss all the time, I just remember that as being a legendary draft, full of can't miss position players, and even at the 6th pick, it was 100% guaranteed that one of the good position players would be there for the taking... And then they announce Romero!
