JuniorFelix54 Verified Member Posted June 12, 2019 Posted June 12, 2019 On pace for close to 50 HRs, I recall being laughed at in the offseason for saying what a terrible move it was that they let him walk a few years ago and how he was nothing special and they don't need him. Why would a terrible team actually want really good players right? 38 HR 107 RBI in 2017, 32 HR 107 RBI in 2018 in only 137 games, and on pace for 47 and 115 this year. Brilliant management.. no wonder this team is so good. How'd that RA DIckey for Sydergaard trade work out? One of the worst run teams in MLB and it shows.

They offered him a fair deal and he turned it down, they moved on. This team hardly needs another DH.

Edwin has been worth a grand total of 5 WAR since he left, and Jays made him a solid offer he turned down. I wanted him to stay but it was his choice. He is off to a great start in 19, but he will probably cool off at some point. His wRC+ is the highest its been since 2015. He has been in steady decline.
glory Old-Timey Member Posted June 12, 2019 Posted June 12, 2019 They offered Edwin 4/80 and he ended up settling for 3/60. I mean, you could argue the Jays should have waited the market out because they clearly misjudged the 1B/DH market by signing Morales and Pearce so soon, but the initial offer was pretty fair.

They did, but I think almost every team misjudged that market that year for bat only sluggers. They all got stranded.
BlueRocky Old-Timey Member Posted June 12, 2019 Posted June 12, 2019 I am happy for Edwin, great guy. He’s one of the most beloved BJs of recent memory and I’ll root for his success. I personally wanted him back but we ended up with Morales. 4/80 was fair and 3/60 was a great deal at the time.

JuniorFelix54 Verified Member Posted June 12, 2019 Author Posted June 12, 2019 WAR lmao, steady decline, over 30 HRs and over 100 RBIs every single season yeah he's fallen apart. Thank God they got rid of such trash for all the superstars they have now huh? It's amazing people are this stupid.

And even if Edwin had accepted the contract offer, there is 0% chance he’d still be on the team this season. He’d have been traded by now.
JuniorFelix54 Verified Member Posted June 12, 2019 Author Posted June 12, 2019 Sounds like all you fools are perfectly content with horrible GMs and a horrible team, well enjoy losers!
Deadpool Old-Timey Member Posted June 12, 2019 Posted June 12, 2019 Even the mods are brainless on here AYE? Running in here, saying really stupid things, then claiming you're smarter than everyone else is not a great way to make friends or influence people. Perhaps you should go to the SportsNet comment section where you can discuss the merits of giving Jose Bautista a 10 year, $180M contract 'cause he was good 5 years ago.

BigCecil Old-Timey Member Posted June 12, 2019 Posted June 12, 2019 Sounds like all you fools are perfectly content with horrible GMs and a horrible team, well enjoy losers! No actually, I'm not content. I loved Edwin on the Jays and watched him develop from the E-5 DFA days when we got him from CINN. But your posts ignore we made him an above market offer he rejected. They also ignore undeniable statistical evidence in a number of key areas that he has been in decline. Smoak is basically a "30 HR 100 RBI" 1B/DH guy and we still suck. One more DH doing same wouldn't add much at all to our win total. Not to mention if we did sign him, he would probably have been traded already for obvious reasons.
Jonn Old-Timey Member Posted June 12, 2019 Posted June 12, 2019 I wouldn't hate to bring him back in the off-season to DH and play some First. Smoak will be traded this summer and Rowdy Tellez is not an MLB player. Be nice to see him end his career as a Blue Jay. Guys going to hit 400+ homeruns in his career quietly. Had some monster seasons for us. Underrated Blue Jay all time for sure.

Now is the time we can give him the PAs to see if he can be a viable 1B/DH option. Nothing to lose. Ain't been pretty so far.

After a year like this, he's going to want to maximize his salary anyways. Doesn't make sense to spend 15m+ on a DH like EE.
Krylian Old-Timey Member Posted June 12, 2019 Posted June 12, 2019 Surprised Junior Felix wasn't banned for that tantrum.
Jimcanuck Old-Timey Member Posted June 12, 2019 Posted June 12, 2019 And if Jose was still playing and had 25 bombs already, the JuniorFelix would use that. No one can predict the future. Some decisions work out, some don't.
CrackerJack Verified Member Posted June 12, 2019 Posted June 12, 2019 99 dingers away from Cooperstown . . . the countdown is on! If Shapiro is still around at the time (which isn't likely), would he honour Edwin on the Level of Excellence?
TheHurl Site Manager Posted June 12, 2019 Posted June 12, 2019 To turn this into a real thread. Is EE a lock for the $20M option next year (technically $15 cause he got a sweet $5M buyout clause)?

I love EE as much as the next Jays fan but give your head a shake, do you really think he would keep us out of 4th in the division? The answer is no, this team has way more problems than some homers & RBI's are gonna solve. The man is 36 years old, he's not gonna bring us back to contention, get over it.

Some decisions work out, some don't. Yup. The single best thing this FO has done was resist the temptation to try extending the window by locking up the old core. Price is worth nowhere near the money he makes. Bautista is completely cooked. Donaldson is almost cooked. Edwin is still mashing, but it’s still a 2-win DH profile. On the aggregate, walking away from all of those guys and clearing the books was the right move.

Yeah - the only move in hindsight that would have been better is rather than signing Morales after EE turned our initial offer down, wait it out to see if EE changed his mind. But the FO didn’t want a situation where our first 2 options signed elsewhere when we were still aiming for the playoffs. EE would have been easier to move than Morales for an actual asset once the rebuild started as he’s still pretty good and a plus for a competing team. But we can’t really assign blame to the FO considering the situation at the time.
