There's more than a few good players from the Dominican Republic some have to be cut from the WBC team. They got Jose Ramirez and Manny Machado who are all star 3rd baseman there's no guarantee other than his bat that he would make that team. In Canada it's a guaranteed that he would make the team. It's entirly up to him for which team he wants to tryout for.

Has there ever been a precedent where such a prospect bombed. Only comp I can think of is Brien Taylor. Seems like it was equal expectations considering he was an NY prospect but I was a kid and can’t completely remember.

Jesus Montero is probably the closest I can think of as a hitter to fail completely and I don't think he was ever a number 1 prospect (top 10 for multiple years though).

 

I can't think of any hitter that rose to number one prospect and totally bombed (i.e. didn't even have an OK career). There's probably some really old ones I guess.
