It's incredibly easy.

 

Old Bartolo did not have great stuff so he needed elite control to be successful. A by-product of elite control is that the umps give you brownie points.

 

Kershaw does not need elite control to be successful. He can throw his elite stuff in and around the zone without elite control and he will still avoid walks and be very successful. He doesn't get brownie points from the umps because he doesn't have elite control.

 

You can tell that your version of command and control are not actually distinct skills because it is categorically impossible to find a pitcher with good command and poor control. They would not exist. The Universe would fold in on itself if there was some pitcher out there who had pinpoint "command" around the zone but was below average at simply throwing strikes at will.

 

Yeah they aren't distinct skills. Good command = good control but good control =/= good command.

 

As for a pitcher with good command and bad control, you are right. The only way it could happen is if a pitcher had such s***** stuff he purposely nibbled at the very outer edges of the zone because it was the only way he could get outs and purposely threw a lot of pitches outside of the zone. Is that even bad control though? His stat sheet would say yes but a scout watching him could see him hitting the glove every time and could give a good command grade. But a player like that is so worthless it's basically impossible for all realistic purposes.

 

That said, it's not "my" version it's the industry's version. But I always appreciate people trying to upend the system and you make good points so I will consider joining you if you try to turn this into a crusade good sir. Cheers.

Terms used being to Close in relationship

 

In Running for instance there is a difference

Between quick and fast !!!

 

Maybe it needs to be changed to have more defining terms as well...

 

Velocity : how Fast top and sits at

Feel : does the pitch do what the pitch thrown

Is meant to do ... does the fastball sink or is it flat, does the curve ball break and how much

Etc etc

Control : Does the pitcher have the ability

To pitch the ball or put it where it is desired

Consistently and repeatedly over the plate

Spot the ball , hit the glove !!!

Keith Law is just one man's opinion of a prospect. Does he command more respect than other prospect evaluators who have also watched Thornton? Meh.

I don't really think people care too much about Law's opinion; people are wrong all the time and they are allowed to be. What bothers people about Law is that he's a nasty *******.
