Laika Community Moderator Posted December 6, 2019 Posted December 6, 2019 Listened a podcast today about how baseball can make the winter meetings more interesting. Why don't they just make it a signing dark period from end of the World Series until this Sunday. Other ideas discussed were signings that happen during the meetings get a small 1 year discount from the luxury tax calculation (which I hate cause it just benefits a few teams). Anyway Monday should have some activity. Anyone from the board heading to San Diego this year? How about they just cancel the winter meetings? Who cares about making them interesting

Ray Verified Member Posted December 6, 2019 Posted December 6, 2019 Rays are so cheap they can’t afford to pay Pham $9M? I like Edwards, but Renfroe is such a downgrade from Pham, especially when they’re supposedly in their competitive window right now.
baubau Verified Member Posted December 6, 2019 Posted December 6, 2019 How do the Rays keep on doing this? I am very jealous of that team.

I like Edwards, but Renfroe is such a downgrade from Pham, especially when they’re supposedly in their competitive window right now. They do gain two years control as well, and Renfroe improved his defense quite a bit last year. I'm not a huge fan of it, but I can understand it. If Pham's decline in defense and offense continues and Renfroe maintains his, a little more BABIP luck could push them fairly close in value.
Ray Verified Member Posted December 6, 2019 Posted December 6, 2019 How do the Rays keep on doing this? I am very jealous of that team. I'm not so sure this is a clear of a win for the Rays as much as their other trades. Depends on what they do for the rest of the offseason, but one of the OF spots has clearly been downgraded for next season as a result of this

Is their OF defense even that big of an issue? They've basically gained Randal Grichuk in return for Tommy Pham. It may work out in the long run with Edwards, but for next year it's a downgrade, unless Renfroe makes a gigantic leap

TheHurl Site Manager Posted December 6, 2019 Posted December 6, 2019 Renfroe was 22 Defensive Runs Saved last year, playing all three OF defensive positions. That's elite D. It's 2.5 win difference in defense alone potentially. They hope that he recovers from a .240 BABIP and cuts the K's a little and still hitting 30 bombs. It's $5M saved and added a prospect with a huge drop in production but probably less overall than we think. This one will be judged by what they do with the savings.

Bobthe4th Old-Timey Member Posted December 6, 2019 Author Posted December 6, 2019 Damn Pineda would have been a great signing on a two year deal. Lindblom or bust. Don't get your hopes up:
Spanky__99 Old-Timey Member Posted December 6, 2019 Posted December 6, 2019 Don't get your hopes up: Bob you're like the dude, with everyone on ignore. Did you just miss 2/3 pages? Old news lad, but you'd know that if... ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I was pointing out to Glory that putting all hope in us signing Lindblum is likely to end in tears.

Slade Old-Timey Member Posted December 6, 2019 Posted December 6, 2019 Rays are too good. I wish Atkins could evaluate players at their level.
Bobthe4th Old-Timey Member Posted December 6, 2019 Author Posted December 6, 2019 Possible solution to our outfield issues? Only 2 years of control though and might be better suited to being a corner outfielder now.
Laika Community Moderator Posted December 6, 2019 Posted December 6, 2019 Marte is real good and if Pittsburgh wants catching prospects Toronto has them. Jansen, McGuire, Moreno, Kirk, and Adams. I don't think Toronto will be super into it though. Marte with the option exercised is 2/$24. Trading prospect capital to pay Marte that much and then have him leave might not make sense. I think Toronto would be more inclined to just get a one year stop-gap bat from free agency. Marte is a real nice finishing piece on a competitive team but is he what Toronto needs? Brett Gardner might sign a one year deal for $10M. Avisail Garcia is a cheaper/worse FA option. Kole Calhoun, Corey Dickerson... there are options that wont cost prospects so won't sacrifice any potential future.
glory Old-Timey Member Posted December 6, 2019 Posted December 6, 2019 If Atkins is being sincere in the below blurb, then I doubt he's looking at Marte. Atkins said the Blue Jays lean more toward adding players via free agency versus a trade because of the high cost that comes with making deals, especially if the returning player has only one or two years of control. “Giving up talent that could be paired with Vladdy and Bo (Bichette) and (Nate) Pearson and that group for a player that might only be here for one or two years is a hard thing to do,” he said. “It doesn’t mean that we won’t. It’s just the players that teams are going to want for a player (with) one or two years with contract years remaining are going to be players that we’re really excited about matching up with that young core that we have.”

Renfroe was a beast in the first half last year (wRC+ 132) and Goins in the second half (wRC+ 51). Will TB be able to work their magic? We'll see. The 5th overall prospect in the Padres system is a top 2-3 prospects on most teams.
glory Old-Timey Member Posted December 6, 2019 Posted December 6, 2019 With that said, never doubt the Rays. Renfroe will probably have a higher WAR than Pham in 2020 just by wearing a Rays uniform when he plays baseball, and Edwards is already holding his own in A+ at age 20 with a great BB/K rate at every level plus speed (no power at all though).
