Angrioter Old-Timey Member Posted March 20, 2019 Posted March 20, 2019 I don't like the deal for Bregman. 2 years of FA lost... Now he will become FA at 30
Angrioter Old-Timey Member Posted March 20, 2019 Posted March 20, 2019 After seeing Mookie Bett's arb years where he's going to get close to 20 mil a year for 3 years I feel like Bregman did leave a good chunk of change out there. This deal buys out 2 FA years too which is probably going to take him out of the 10 year Machado-like extension when he hits FA. That said, he has yet to hit a gigantic payday and 100 mil is a lot of guaranteed money to turn down. Seems like a reasonable deal for both sides but I like this for the Astros. As an example, imagine if Vlad Jr. signed something like this after putting up 12 WAR in his first 2+ seasons. We'd be ecstatic. Only bat 6 fWAR season? He's not Barry Bonds

Yup, and in reference that Eloy Jimenez contract rumour was kiboshed by Kenny Ken. Both sides come out well.
Terminator Old-Timey Member Posted March 20, 2019 Posted March 20, 2019 Only bat 6 fWAR season? He's not Barry Bonds I agree I was just saying Vlad Jr., warts and all, signing an extension like this would have us all howling in delight. Tells you how good Bregman is and how much money he gave up to secure a guaranteed 100 mil.
glory Old-Timey Member Posted March 20, 2019 Posted March 20, 2019 Yeah Betts will end up making over $60m in three years of arb and then hit free agency at 28 where he will get more than $300m in all likelihood. Bregman probably did leave some money on the table but hard to turn down $100m guaranteed. Plus given the way the Astros took care of Altuve after initially having him on a team friendly deal I’m sure Bregman has a chance to have this deal extended some time in the next six years.

Tells you how good Bregman is and how much money he gave up to secure a guaranteed 100 mil. Did he give up that much though? Betts is probably going to pull in between 55 and 60M in his three arbitration years, and while Bregman is very, very good, he isn't Betts. It's probably fair to put him at around 50M for those three years. His two free agent years are worth, I don't know, 60 to 65M? He probably left 15M on the table, and that's assuming he had nearly perfect health during his three arbitration years, which is certainly no sure thing. It's a very good deal for him imo, and it's a decent deal for the Astros to lock up two of his FA years at a reasonable cost.
TBJ12 Verified Member Posted March 20, 2019 Posted March 20, 2019 He'll also have produced billions of dollars in value for the Angels org. He's unfathomably good. Billions seems a bit much. This isn’t the Dodgers or Lakers. Trout almost seems like a non factor in LA outside of Angels baseball
Angrioter Old-Timey Member Posted March 20, 2019 Posted March 20, 2019 Bregman: 1 Pre arbitration 600K 3 Arbitration 55 millions 2 years FA 56 ~112 millions
Spanky__99 Old-Timey Member Posted March 20, 2019 Posted March 20, 2019 Billions seems a bit much. This isn’t the Dodgers or Lakers. Trout almost seems like a non factor in LA outside of Angels baseball They've likely already doubled his value to this point on the field, so yeah, a Billion easy.

Dr. Dinger Old-Timey Member Posted March 20, 2019 Posted March 20, 2019 Interesting all these pre-FA extensions happening. Would love to get Vlad on something like 8 years/$80-90M. Have him up asap.
Orgfiller Old-Timey Member Posted March 20, 2019 Posted March 20, 2019 Brandon Lowe 6/$24M with the Rays. Plus two club options. The Rays did it again.

You have to wonder what Vlads ultimate goal is. We know money is not an issue for him as his dad made 125 million in his career. Is signing an extension that big of a deal for him or is playing on a contender Vlads main goal?

Both, all the more to sign guaranteed money.

L54 Old-Timey Member Posted March 20, 2019 Posted March 20, 2019 Why the f*** would someone turn down 100M at 24 or whatever he is? You guys realize most players don’t care about the spreadsheet math right? Oh no he left 18M in surplus value on the table lol Bregman. Good on him for getting paid, and securing himself and his family for life.

Scott Boras has become the most successful sports agent of all time by giving his clients the exact opposite advice but what does he know?
Captain Adama Old-Timey Member Posted March 20, 2019 Posted March 20, 2019 I don't think the framing numbers are included in the defense column of fangraphs just yet. Otherwise the calculations look really off.

I was essentially waiting for this response, he's locked in, he doesn't give a f*** about arb years, he's paid now, guaranteed. Good for him.

Unless Scott Boras is paying his guys who suffer career altering injuries a good will allowance I don’t really care what his advice is. The more money you make the more money he makes. If you tear your ACL he moves onto the next cash cow. You work your whole life to get to the show. Someone shoves 100M in front of you and that’s yours if you sign on the dotted line. Take the security and tell Scott to beat it.
