Abomination Old-Timey Member Posted August 4, 2019 Posted August 4, 2019 It's weird seeing Oakland on the other end of that list.
Ex Player Verified Member Posted August 4, 2019 Posted August 4, 2019 I've seen guys get hit in the face when bunting like this. Thats why you never lean over too far over the plate when attempting a bunt. I dont think I've ever seen it happen on a swing though He's lucky he's not missing his front row of teeth

I dont think I've ever seen it happen on a swing though He's lucky he's not missing his front row of teeth I saw it when my son was playing in 12U Little League. A player on the opposing team fouled the ball into his face and resulting in a nasty gash (as I recall just around the eyebrow)with a lot of bleeding. Well it was troubling at the time but 3-4 stitches and a week or two later the young lad was back at it:cool:

May have just had some teeth that got loosened by the impact and they made sure that everything was in place to heal up.
Bobthe4th Old-Timey Member Posted August 4, 2019 Author Posted August 4, 2019 (edited) Looks like Hanson has been released. One of the worst Jays ever, funny to remember that he made the team ahead of Sogard. Edited August 4, 2019 by Bobthe4th

flafson Verified Member Posted August 4, 2019 Posted August 4, 2019 Bo's steamer projection up to a 100 wRC+ now. Projected to be worth 0.9 WAR over 40 games How can the number 6 prospect in baseball only project 100 wRC+, even after putting godly numbers in his first full week in the majors?
Abomination Old-Timey Member Posted August 4, 2019 Posted August 4, 2019 How can the number 6 prospect in baseball only project 100 wRC+, even after putting godly numbers in his first full week in the majors? He had a 101 wRC+ in AAA before being called up. I would have expected his projection this year to be less. One week is nothing, either way.

Abomination Old-Timey Member Posted August 4, 2019 Posted August 4, 2019 Steamer is projecting Vladdy at 130 wRC+ for the rest of the season, with a .298/.366/.506 line and 1.2 WAR. Yes please!
Orgfiller Old-Timey Member Posted August 5, 2019 Posted August 5, 2019 How can the number 6 prospect in baseball only project 100 wRC+, even after putting godly numbers in his first full week in the majors? Projections are agnostic to prospect rankings, it's just about performance. A 100 wRC+ for a rookie SS at the age of 21 is fantastic.
Solaxys Old-Timey Member Posted August 5, 2019 Posted August 5, 2019 What's next for us? At the start of the year it was Vlad and wasn't a hot/blow-my-mind start but he is finally coming around and it is exciting to see him pepper balls. Biggio was also fun to watch and his walk rate is through the roof; the bat should become respectable with time given his patience. LGJ was a pleasant surprise and he seems to have settled down to where he will most likely be for the foreseeable future/seasons in terms of hitting capability. Then trade deadline - which was all around meh. Hopeful, possibility of some great things, but nothing that made my head turn. Finally Bichette, who is tearing it up, but have to see how sustainable it is. Who/what are we watching for down the pipeline next? Is it just Giles and Galvis trade post season now while picking up more rentals next year to sell off mid season?

Yes next season expect more short term veteran free agent signings with the intention to be sold off. I would be shocked if the Blue Jays spent any significant money for multiple years. Perhaps with the amount of money off the books they will look to be creative by taking salary from teams in exchange for decent young prospects. I would not expect Giles or Galvis to be traded before the season. It would depend on the return though. If a team legitimately wants to start Galvis at SS everyday maybe. Might see some more David Phelps type contracts trying to squeeze out some control without risk. Blue Jays front office really likes team options as they should.

There are only so many good FA each year. Jays can't just sit and wait for the players under control to start being high end MLB'ers and then expect to pick up some good FA at that time, out of the few available.
flafson Verified Member Posted August 5, 2019 Posted August 5, 2019 Any chance we will see August trades? I read somewhere that they changed the rules a bit on those type of trades but not quite clear what changed from the past.

They have the salary room to take on a couple of bad contracts. Pipeline, other than Pearson we are looking at guys like Alford, Murphy, Kay, Merryweather to hopefully become 25 man guys next season.

Guys can get released, and signed as free agents though.
flafson Verified Member Posted August 5, 2019 Posted August 5, 2019 Nope, those are no more. Guys can get released, and signed as free agents though. So if we wanted to try and sneak an expensive veteran through the wire and trade him once he clears, that isn't possible this season?
Jonn Old-Timey Member Posted August 5, 2019 Posted August 5, 2019 Nope, those are no more. Guys can get released, and signed as free agents though. Which I honestly don’t like. You’re now eliminating the chance of non contending clubs to get an asset for a veteran player that late into the season now. August 15th trade deadline makes more sense. Smoak for example is probably just going to get released and they will bring up Tellez to get his at-bats. Still can’t believe they couldn’t find a single taker for him. Either the Blue Jays didn’t want to eat his entire salary in a deal or they wanted him around as a veteran presence for a little longer.
Jonn Old-Timey Member Posted August 5, 2019 Posted August 5, 2019 MLBTR speculated that you could see vets on high-priced deals on waivers for free. Wade Davis and Daniel Murphy. They even mentioned Grichuk lol. If someone took Grichuk for free I honestly wouldn’t be upset. I have serious doubts he will ever build up enough value to be a positive asset again. Its still baffling they picked him of all people to extend. Power is intriguing but we have guys who hit homeruns. His defence is good but hes not exceptional. He doesn’t get on base, and he strikes out a ton. Not really a guy you want to be a core player for you.

Jays and Smoak have agreed on a deal in principle, just haven't signed off yet.
flafson Verified Member Posted August 5, 2019 Posted August 5, 2019 Reds claimed Kevin Gausman and took his remaining salary for the year, interesting.
Jonn Old-Timey Member Posted August 5, 2019 Posted August 5, 2019 Since we're on that topic, any chance an early extension to someone like Vladdy or Bo? I’m sure they will try with both but I doubt will see any kind of sweetheart deal. Or a deal that will really save the Blue Jays that much money long term. There is another possibility with Smoak. Jays and Smoak have agreed on a deal in principle, just haven't signed off yet. I don’t see any upside in resigning Smoak. He’s already regressed fairy significantly. Hes been pretty miserable of late and would rather see some younger players get at-bats at first base. Tellez is most likely nothing but he is someone fully capable of playing that position with guys like Biggio, McKinney, and Drury getting time there as well.
