I was just thinking about this the other day, but we'll likely have a ton of payroll flexibility next season. The Morales + Martin contracts will be completely off the books, and the amount owed to Tulo will decrease by $6M to $14M. That's $38M off the books right there. Assuming Stroman and Giles are gone too, our highest priced arbitration guys will be either Aaron Sanchez or Matt Shoemaker, both of whom will likely be making less than $5M given their lack of performance or injuries. Travis will likely be non-tendered at this point. Smoak will be off the books too.

Currently RosterResource has us at $30M guaranteed commitments for next season: https://www.rosterresource.com/mlb-toronto-blue-jays-info/

Even with arb guys and the Galvis/Phelps options picked up, I can see hovering around a $50M heading into the offseason.

All this to say, I hope we finally supplement the core with some major league good talent this offseason. Either with free agency or trades. Imagine Anthony Rendon alongside Vlad, Bichette, Biggio, Gurriel.

Yes, plus whoever is picked up in Stroman/Giles trades, if they aren't extended.

Nice idea, but you’re dreaming if you think we’re going to give Rendon what he wants (easily $200m plus) to play 3B here. He’s a Boras client.

Ok we will have lots of payroll space, but that’s because the majority of our players are s***. We would need 10 new players to compete next year, no chance we give a mega contract to one guy.

Maybe the year after, when we hopefully have a much more solid squad. Maybe.

Yep. They’ll definitely wait until the team “takes the next step” before making any splashes.

Has Rogers ever considered selling? Haven’t even read about that. So much potential while Jays are Canada’s only team. Good owner would really kill it

I have serious doubt they will spend any money this off-season. Seems more likely they will opt be terrible for another year and have the payroll sit that low with the poor attendance numbers. I would love to be surprised though. Vlad, Biggio, Bo, and guess we can throw Gurriel into that group now will have 2 months together to show how close they are. Bo should be up no later than August 1st or whenever Galvis is moved.

They are bottom 10 in payroll now after being nearly top 5 a couple of years ago. The payroll is already super flexible. Doesn't mean much when free agency is full of duds and land mines these days and the only way to build a sustainable winner is to progressively invest in research and player development and farm assets.

If free agency sucks the other avenue with low payroll are trades for bad contracts with good prospects added in. Hope the Jays go this route.

Rogers would never, ever sell the Jays, it's free content for their TV stations. The team is WAY more valuable to them than it would be to any other owner. The only way someone could buy the Jays would be to buy Rogers Communications outright.

Tulo is "taking time off to think about his future" right now, if he retires that's just GOLD for the Jays.

I just took a lot at the Yankees top prospects. Man they have a ton of pitching prospects! What is a reasonable, in who they would send for Stroman? Like if the Jays only wanted pitching in return, what is a plausible get? Garcia and Schmidt? Schmidt and a lower prospect?

Clint Frazier +

a) two of Abreu, Contreras, Stephan, and King (this is the boring bulk return where the arms are probably relievers but might be Trent Thorntony surprise starters).

or

B) Luis Gil or Schmidt (super unlikely New York agrees to this)

or

c) Jonathan Loaisiga?

No chance New York deals Deivi Garcia here and I think almost no chance they will want to part with Gil or Schmidt either. They'll try to pawn of Luis Medina who would be an interesting throw in but should have very little value. Their preferred deal will be getting value for Clint Frazier and including pitching.

If the Jays deal Stroman to the Yankees, the main piece coming back will be Frazier. That is who Cashman is trying to use to improve the rotation. Expecting anyone significant beyond that is wishful thinking.

That's why I hope he's traded anywhere else.

Frazier and some varying combo of pitching prospects sounds like a good return to me. I've always like Frazier tho

Wasn't there noise the summer Rogers were looking at potential buyers for the Jays?

Cashman is saying he won’t even do Frazier for Stroman straight up. Loaisiga and Deivi G might be the only guy I care for. It’s true they have a lot of pitching, many of them were considered top guys last year that have fallen a bit, but many of their young arms have injury problems that I wouldn’t want back as a centerpiece for that trade.

The way things are going this smells like another Happ for McKinney and Drury situation. Cashman’s fleecing resume is quite impressive and he’s also holding a lot of hot garbage as trade chips.

Stroman is worth way more than that, do ourselves a favor and look elsewhere.

lol @ Cashman pretending that he wouldn't trade ginger Domingo Santana for Stroman

Why do people keep bringing up the Happ trade? He was a rental in his 30's who only started to be good in his 30's so he didn't have the pedigree of a David Price. The Jays will get much more for Stroman.

When did Cashman say that?

In either event it’s just posturing but I know he said he didn’t want to trade Clint for a rental, which Stroman is not.

He’s posturing so that Frazier can hopefully, for them, be the entire return for Stroman or a pitcher like him

I haven't heard anything at all like that, and they'd be super dumb to do that since they have 35,000 sports channels that need content beyond poker and darts...

I remember that. Reports that Rogers was open to selling the Jays, but it went very quiet after that.

That said, I'm hearing that Rogers is cutting (part of the reason McCown was let go) because they are struggling and bad investments are taking their toll. I'm sure they're regretting that $5B deal with the NHL.

He's talking about these rumours, there's been no updates since...
