Maybe, but 2014 Astros lost 91 games. Following summer they picked Bregman 2nd. 2017 version won the WS. Anecdotal, sure, but I don't believe there is a link between the team outcome and player developmental progress. I was searching for such a study last night, nada. Nor do I believe the 2019 win result will be indicative of future win results.

How many other superstars were picked at 25?

Pretty sure you can name a lot more that have gone at #1.

Of course there are exceptions, but I think the math would prove that picking early is more beneficial generally.

“I was hoping to get one more run and get him to third base with my leadoff guy coming up,” Montoyo said. “That’s why I called the bunt. I like bunting.”

Mookie Betts picked 172nd

Christian Yelich picked 23rd

Aaron Judge picked 32nd

Matt Chapman picked 25th

J.D. Martinez picked 611th

Andrelton Simmons picked 70th

Nolan Arenado picked 59th

Lorenzo Cain picked 496th

Freddie Freeman picked 78th

Paul Goldschmidt picked 246th

Matt Carpenter picked 399th

Trevor Story picked 25th

Jacob deGrom picked 272nd

Corey Kluber picked 134th

Blake Snell picked 52nd

Edwin Diaz picked 98th

Josh Hader picked 582nd

Definitely seems to be a lot more high pick superstars on the pitching side, but with position players it's almost a crapshoot. Considering drafting pitching is normally not a great idea, it probably doesn't matter if we have a high pick or not. That also doesn't count Jose Ramirez who was an unheralded international sign.

This is probably the authorative study of MLB draft pick success rate.

https://sabr.org/research/chances-drafted-baseball-player-making-major-leagues-quantitative-study

47% of 1st round picks played in MLB 3+ years, this drops to 31% for 2nd round picks and 21% for 3rd round picks. Not a surprise, the higher up the board the higher the success rate.

Obviously that's the case. A first rounder is going to have a lot more rope than a third rounder.

I suspect what he meant to say was "I like to bunt when useless hitters like Urena are up and actual major league batters are due up after them". Of course he can't say that though.

This is an interesting read:

Assume they fell out over a woman, but who knows.

Yelich looks completely locked in like he did in the second half of last year...

Edit: said this right before he smoked 4th consecutive HR in a game...

Can I just say I love Steven Brunt's work? I am locked into anything he produces. I love how they do these so you can get to know the managers/players more.

Also - KK is dreamy.

Travis Bergen gave up a double last night in his mlb debut with the Giants, I still think he will get offered back to us at some point.

He gave up a double to Hosmer who is bad vs lefties.
