I do plan to address the "playing for a whole country thing" because a) it isn't true (people in Windsor are generally Tiger fans, people in Vancouver are generally M's fans, people in South Manitoba are generally Twins fans, etc.) And people in the other provinces despise Ontario and Toronto in particular. They think we're selling out to be more American, which is undoubtedly true. Part of it is definitely envy though. Sorry you fellas live in s***** places.

But it will just be kinda ice breakery. My only contribution to the podcast will either be making him feel more comfortable so he's more open and less guarded, or pissing him off and having him leave immediately.

No intelligent person is going to say anything bad about Canada, especially when it might affect the way they are perceived in their career. And that's what mainstream media does which annoys half of the people on this board. The Radio scouts don't have an audience to pander to for a quick sound bite of some American saying something either dumb or nice about Canada (why the f*** people enjoy these make zero sense to me). Radio Scouts should be looking into talking about training, pitching and what changes have happened in his life.

 

I am not expecting anything bad, I want to know what US high school kids (not border kids) think about being drafted by a team from a country they might not know much about or have preconceived notions.. No disrespect to anyone, but I have heard some pretty boring questions.. Now that he has played for Vancouver, maybe he can talk about what his preconceived notions were/and that of his fellow team mates vs what he has experienced.

 

I personally, am not interested in his training routine, or how many reps of whatever he does. or what he thinks about our high performance department..(that is going to be 100% a stock answer). Put me to sleep with that...

 

The fact is, most US kids don't know s*** about Canada and I would be interested to see what the general feeling is about being drafted having to go to a Canadian team. I am NOT looking for the guy to slob Canada's knob and bath in the compliments.. I am genuinely interested in the word on the street among draft eligible players.

This may be a touchy subject but I'd be interested in his thoughts on how many minor leaguers quit playing solely for financial reasons. Obviously the bonus babies can stick a few years but those players chosen after those rounds may not have the ability to live off of like $13,000 a year.

So I was listening to an interview with Derek Holland the other day. I am going to use this as an example.

 

They asked him about his spin rate.. He basically said, he doesn't give a f***, at the end of the day he needs to concentrate on throwing strikes.

 

Then they asked him about some geographical preferences and he gave some really interesting answers about wanting to play for both Ohio teams, but one being NL and the other being AL what the advantages and disadvantages were and that Cincinnati had reached out to him (which Jon Morosi then put on MLBTR like it was his scoop-tool)

 

Then he did a Kermit the Frog imitation that was fnnn cool, funny and entertaining!

 

Another interview I heard was talking about the hazing the player went through in his rookie year.. It was funny as all could be, I was glued to the radio.

 

That is entertaining and interesting stuff!

Eh, tbh I don't find the question particularly interesting. We'd kinda be painting him into a corner. He's not going to talk badly about the place his org is based, it's pretty easy to see how he'd answer and even if he answered differently than we think, I don't really think there's much value in the topic. I don't want to waste time with questions about Canada, I'll let meatheads like Jeff Blair do that.

You canoe heads are always discussing whether Canada is a hindrance for signing FAs etc. It is a legitimate question, something interesting.. what do US high school kids think when they hear they might/are be drafted by the Blue Jays. Is there trepidation... The stock PC answer will be I am happy to be there and in the majors etc... Wondering if he had any other concerns question prior and what his peers talk about when discussing getting drafted by a team from a different country..

 

With what are you having comprehension problems..?

 

1. Doesnt matter as long as they are drafted

2. They will know little about Canada unless they follow the Jays

3. Politics, taxes, gun laws mean jack s*** to an 18 year old

4. When they do get to Canada they wont notice a difference culturally unless they are from a small town going to a big city or vice versa

5. They may have interesting comments regarding essentially having a bulk of a nation behind you vs part of or a state or two

That map, at least the Florida part is messed up. A LOT/majority of that black on in the North and central east coast and up the middle is Braves fans.. No fnnn way all that especially rural areas are Yankees fans. Braves were the TEAM prior to Tampa and Miami, still are. They were on TBS every night for years. The Yankees were only on the occasional game of the week. Chipper Jones is from Volusia county, Daytona Beach area. There are not enough Yankees (northerners) in that area to overtake Braves fans, let a lone Yankee fans.

 

My point being, if that is totally wrong in an area I am very familiar with, what else is wrong with the map..

Appreciate the honest response and not some dumb ass remark. Your point is fair. I was in NO means advocating a question that he would obviously not answer truthfully anyway.. Like, are you pissed you have to play in Canada.. Nothing like that.. I was just trying to get at what preconceived notions he might have had and some differences if any he has noticed, and maybe some of his fellow draftees etc.. Not expecting he would ever say anything bad about the Jays or Canada and wouldn't want to put him in that position.

The data is based on Facebook likes, which may not correlate well to actual numbers of fans (especially among older folks, the proportion of which is likely skewed a bit in places like Florida). It's still interesting though.

I don't get why nobody wants to ask him what he first thought when he was drafted by Toronto? Any American is going to wonder at least to some extent what differences they might encounter playing in a different country. I work with lots of American kids and they typically have preconceived notions about Canada and what to expect. If he's from Ohio he might even like hockey! Who knows. Bombarding him with questions about spin rate might not get the best answers out of him though.

 

Or you guys could ask him how he feels about the meat and cheese trays/peanut butter and jam sandwiches for pre game meals
