glory Old-Timey Member Posted November 16, 2018 Posted November 16, 2018 We didn't have CF options like we do now. We didn't have OF options period. Pompey was always hurt. Alford was in AA in '17 and then struggled in '18. Smith Jr is an org guy. The only OF options on the team now aside from those three were acquired from outside the org (Grichuk, Teoscar, McKinney). Hell for a while Zeke was our best OF in 2017. Things still aren't that great for the OF but much better than it used to be. Moving Pillar now should be easier. Slide Grichuk over and we're good.
Slade Old-Timey Member Posted November 16, 2018 Posted November 16, 2018 I've wanted pillar gone for a couple of seasons now. But selling low seems to be a pattern here. Pillar gets worst ever year, nothing you can do about that he's a bad player.
Krylian Old-Timey Member Posted November 16, 2018 Posted November 16, 2018 Pillar gets worst ever year, nothing you can do about that he's a bad player. Yup. At this point I'd just as soon fire him out of a canon and into the sun as care about any sort of tangible return.
Krylian Old-Timey Member Posted November 16, 2018 Posted November 16, 2018 We didn't have CF options like we do now. It wasn't about options. It was about do you think he'd reached his full potential and where did you think his value was heading... Also what direction did you think the team was going in. If nowhere good is your company then you look to maximize whatever value you can for him as a defensive asset and find a replacement elsewhere even if it's a mediocre one. This team seems to fear selling high.
Orgfiller Old-Timey Member Posted November 16, 2018 Posted November 16, 2018 Pillar gets worst ever year, nothing you can do about that he's a bad player. Pillar absolutely is not a bad player. He's a player whose skillset declines rapidly with age and due to his offensive profile can be difficult to watch at the plate, but he has been excellent for us and while I too would prefer someone else manning CF in the future, his contributions for the team at the given price should be appreciated.
Bobthe4th Old-Timey Member Posted November 16, 2018 Posted November 16, 2018 Pillar gets worst ever year, nothing you can do about that he's a bad player. He’s a bad batter - 10 WAR over the last 4 seasons is better than 90% of our roster in that time. Though obviously once his legs go his career is over.
John_Havok Old-Timey Member Posted November 16, 2018 Posted November 16, 2018 Also, wasn't Jim one of the first people onto the Jansen bandwagon? Saying he was a darkhorse top prospect a couple of years ago. Surprised he wouldn't milk that for all it's worth, he must really think he is right more often than he is. Jim has the mentality of a stock trader. Buy low on Jansen. Sell "high" on Jansen. The "book value" (outdated prospect ranking) on Anderson is higher. Sell Pillar for whatever. With absolutely no regards to team need or knowledge of the market for these players. I have a particular sensitivity to the catcher spot, we all should, ever since what AA did to it turning it from a position of team strength and depth to Arencibia in eight weeks. It's finally looking good again after 5 years. Luckily the team had Martin but had to pay for him. This team could have 10+ WAR from minimum wage players in positions of scarcity - 3B, SS, 2B, C - by 2020. Basically CF is left and the rest of the diamond can be filled with 30+ year old mashers at a cheap cost because the market has completely disappeared for them. That leaves a ton of FA money for pitching. Let's not f*** this up. I need your opinion on High Tide Inc for investing purposes.
Dick_Pole Old-Timey Member Posted November 16, 2018 Posted November 16, 2018 I need your opinion on High Tide Inc for investing purposes. Is this listed on an exchange or planning to? Says it's a private company. The retail location business will probably be pretty hot to trade given the supply shortages that are happening right now so it would be a good IPO to trade once you can but I have no idea of long term economics of retailers. Think of it like this...if places like OCS are doing just fine and if OCS is the Amazon version for cannabis that makes High Tide the Sears model. Maybe a bit different because this is a consumption product so retailers might have more strength.

It is incredible that he didn't truly break out until his 29th birthday and still went on to win 300 games and 110 career WAR. He posted a 9.6 WAR season at age 40. He was a bbbaaaaaaddddddddd man.

TheHurl Site Manager Posted November 17, 2018 Posted November 17, 2018 San Diego pursuing Thor and Mets open to talk. What would you give up for him? So little info on Van Wagenen and what type of GM he is. Padres have are deep in prospects so I can see them trying to put together a package of top 150 guys (probably arms). What would you be comfortable moving from the Jays for 3 years (we'll say $30M in Arb) of Thor?

jays4life19 Old-Timey Member Posted November 17, 2018 Posted November 17, 2018 "The Padres, who first pursued Noah Syndergaard at the non-waiver deadline, remain interested in the Mets right-hander, according to major-league sources. Syndergaard, 26, is under control for three more seasons and projected to earn $5.9 million through arbitration in 2019, according to MLBTradeRumors.com. The Mets’ willingness to trade him is not known; the team’s public position is that it wants to build around its starting pitching, not break it apart. The Padres, however, represent a potentially appealing trade partner. Baseball America rates their farm system as the best in the game, and a trade of Syndergaard for multiple prospects would enable the Mets to address a variety of needs. The likelihood that the Mets secure long-term deals with Syndergaard and National League Cy Young Award winner Jacob deGrom seems slim, so it probably will behoove them to at least explore the trade market for one or the other. DeGrom, 30, who is under control for two more seasons, almost certainly would be the Mets’ preference to retain. He is homegrown (the Mets acquired Syndergaard in a trade from the Blue Jays in December 2012), a more accomplished pitcher and more beloved by teammates and fans. New Mets GM Brodie Van Wagenen, when he was deGrom’s agent at CAA, said the team needed to either sign deGrom long-term or trade him. Van Wagenen now is in position to act on his words. DeGrom and Syndergaard are still represented by CAA." - Ken Rosenthal

I'm sure they would be asking for one of Vlad or Bo.

Abomination Old-Timey Member Posted November 19, 2018 Posted November 19, 2018 Big pass from me at the money he's supposed to get. Yeah, with his durability issues that seems a little unwise. Something like 3/36 would make me a lot more interested. Maybe an option year based on innings.
glory Old-Timey Member Posted November 19, 2018 Posted November 19, 2018 Yeah Eovaldi is going to get too many years and dollars to be worth the injury risk, especially after his playoff run.
