They took the same trade-based approach to the offense last year and ended up with Solarte, Grichuk, and Diaz.

 

So... short and mid-term assets that range from awful to average.

 

I wouldn't worry about the comments too much. They'll probably acquire some skidmark but also some good rotation pieces.

After Troy Tulowitzki spent the entire 2018 season on the disabled list, Atkins said that the veteran shortstop’s status for 2019 “starts with health.” When asked if Tulowitzki can still be an everyday player amidst the Jays’ younger infield options, Atkins answered “If Tulo’s healthy and performing at a very high rate, then yes. If he’s healthy and his performance isn’t to the calibre that major-league environments demand, then no.” Tulowitzki has been adamant about remaining at shortstop, though it remains to be seen if he can handle any position at all given his lengthy injury history over the years; in addition to missing 2018, Tulowitzki averaged just 98 games a season from 2012-17. Obviously Tulowitzki has virtually no trade value in the wake of his lost year, so the Jays might have to consider releasing him and eating the $38MM still owed to him through 2020.

Yup. Corbin, Keuchel, Happ, Morton, Ryu, Kikuchi and any number of possible trade targets. There's no reason to focus only on back-end depth starters

 

I'm confident we'll at least be in the mix for some of those guys. Would love a Corbin or Keuchel complimented with Ryu or Eovaldi and then Robertson and Shawn Kelley.

no, they haven't released him. They are just making room on the 40 man roster. If Berti passes through waivers (he will) he'll remain in the system.

I believe if he's not on the 40 man he'd be a minor league free agent at the end of the year anyway.

At least he got his major league hit. Was a classy move by the Jays to bring him up for those games after he toiled in the minors for 3400 PA, 99% of which were with the Jays

That seems highly unlikely. TJ surgery is a 15-month recovery on average, which would put him on schedule to return in June.

According to James Andrews, that's on the long end of the average recovery time. According to Andrews, the average is 12-16 months and I'd assume that older pitchers take longer. I don't think it's unreasonable to think he can be back by April.

I'm sure he could be, but he'd probably be on significant pitch and innings restrictions. They'll likely bring him along slowly, and we'll see him in the 2nd half.

Will Smith had his TJS in late March 2017 and he pitched in Spring training this year before starting a minor league rehab in April.

Merryweather might pitch in ST, but I doubt he breaks camp with the team. They will probably take it slow with him and then ramp it up towards the middle of the year.

 

Best guess, if he stays healthy, is he will make an appearance on the roster towards the end of the year (Aug/Sept) and then be a rotation candidate for 2020.
