DigitalRock Old-Timey Member Posted September 1, 2018 Posted September 1, 2018 JD's tenure here could not have ended a whole lot worse...really sucks, he produced so many great memories here.
burlingtonbandit Old-Timey Member Posted September 1, 2018 Posted September 1, 2018 I don't think people are really appreciating how little value there is in a 40-50 pick; you're getting an org guy 90+% of the time. Yeah, the return for Donaldson might not be great but the odds that we'll get something worse than that comp pick are so remote. Like, what if JD plays the rest of the season and lands us T-Mac? Certainly in the realm of possibility given the known stipulations of the PTBNL around Donaldson's health. Half a season of Chapman got Torres, so I don't think we should necessarily give up hope that we get something good if Donaldson plays the rest of the season. If a team was going to give up a significant prospect they would have just claimed him off waivers.
P2F Old-Timey Member Posted September 1, 2018 Posted September 1, 2018 Jays are sending $2.7 to the Indians. Wonder what the significance of that number is. Maple Boner alert Noah Naylor would be fantastic.
Thaddeus Malice Verified Member Posted September 1, 2018 Posted September 1, 2018 Really hope that PTBNL has some value. Shatkins couldn't have foreseen the severity of Donaldsons injury this year, but still an MVP level asset who was worth 5 War just last year and we basically lost all of that value. Not the best asset management.

Spanky__99 Old-Timey Member Posted September 1, 2018 Posted September 1, 2018 I think it might be Julian Mayweather... I hope it's better, we'll see I guess. As mentioned in this article it's better than a comp pick in the 75-80 range. https://www.sportsnet.ca/baseball/mlb/donaldson-trade-marks-abrupt-split-blue-jays-promising-start/ From last year by Longenhagen... https://www.fangraphs.com/blogs/instagraphs/daily-prospect-notes-531/ Julian Merryweather, RHP, Cleveland (Profile) Level: Triple-A Age: 25 Org Rank: NR Top 100: NR Line: 8 IP, 4 H, 0 BB, 8 K Notes I left Merryweather off of Cleveland’s offseason list entirely because I had reports from scouts who thought he was succeeding as a 24-year-old in A-ball due to deception, a good changeup, and little else. Turns out that was foolish. Merryweather is 25 but he’s pitched his way to Columbus and he carved up one of the more talented lineups in the International League yesterday, garnering swings and misses with all three pitches. He’s deceptive, athletic, touched 95 several times, flashed a plus curveball and changeup, and despite some issues timing all the moving parts of his delivery, he threw lots of strikes. There are scouts who think he fits better in relief, but he has mid-rotation stuff.
Vdubfan Verified Member Posted September 1, 2018 Posted September 1, 2018 What? That doesn't make any sense Sure it does. If a team valued JD at the level of a significant prospect, why wouldn't you claim him?
Krylian Old-Timey Member Posted September 1, 2018 Posted September 1, 2018 Seeing as Atkins already said their position player depth can't get much better I'm guessing it'll be an arm.
Todd Van Anus Verified Member Posted September 1, 2018 Posted September 1, 2018 Julian Merryweather. What are the scouting reports on him?

TBJ12 Verified Member Posted September 1, 2018 Posted September 1, 2018 He's almost 27 and hasn't pitched since 2017 according to fangraphs. Really hope this isn't the return. https://www.fangraphs.com/statss.aspx?playerid=sa829363&position=P
Todd Van Anus Verified Member Posted September 1, 2018 Posted September 1, 2018 He had a 6.58 ERA in AAA in 2017 over 10 starts.
Jimcanuck Old-Timey Member Posted September 1, 2018 Posted September 1, 2018 BA writeup after 2017 season Following a breakout 2016 season, Merryweather carried that momentum into 2017. After a strong start to the season with Double-A Akron, he was promoted to Triple-A at the end of May. While Merryweather's results suffered down the stretch with the Clippers, his stuff and peripherals remained strong. Merryweather has the stuff to start, but still is learning some of the finer points of pitching. His fastball sits in the mid 90s and regularly reaches 97 mph. His changeup can be an above-average pitch with fading action, but he will need to tighten the pitch up to get hitters to chase it more often. He throws both a curveball and a slider, which can be average offerings. He does a good job of using his 6-foot-4 frame to his advantage and works well down in the strike zone to create groundouts. He throws a lot of strikes and repeats his delivery well. Merryweather has the potential to be a starter in the big leagues, but he will be 26 on Opening Day and breaking into the Indians' already crowded rotation is no easy task. He'll start 2018 back at Columbus and have a chance to pitch his way into the mix in Cleveland.

Todd Van Anus Verified Member Posted September 1, 2018 Posted September 1, 2018 Why does he have no pitching stats for 2018?
Jimcanuck Old-Timey Member Posted September 1, 2018 Posted September 1, 2018 Why does he have no pitching stats for 2018? Had TJS in March 2018 And actually, a guy that had TJS in March is not really a candidate to help in a 'significant way' in 2019
Todd Van Anus Verified Member Posted September 1, 2018 Posted September 1, 2018 Had TJS in March 2018 Ahhh...thanks. So why can't he be traded now?
Laika Community Moderator Posted September 1, 2018 Posted September 1, 2018 Merryweather would be good. Smells kind of like Mike Clevinger.
Spanky__99 Old-Timey Member Posted September 1, 2018 Posted September 1, 2018 I think the real problem here is JD. This is from the article I posted above. https://www.sportsnet.ca/baseball/mlb/donaldson-trade-marks-abrupt-split-blue-jays-promising-start/ Some of the frustration on Donaldson’s end started becoming public Thursday when Donaldson told Rob Longley of the Toronto Sun of a perceived rift with management that, "There’s a lot I can say about that, but I choose not to say anything about it right now." He also added that the troublesome left calf that has kept off a big-league field since May 28 had been "completely ruptured" and the "area outside the calf" was also injured, leading to an absence that was far longer than originally anticipated. Donaldson was in charge of his own rehab, a by-product of previous friction from the spring of 2017, when he suffered an injury to his right calf. On the final day of the season, he told Sportsnet in an interview that, "I’ve never torn a muscle in my body before and to have a tear in my calf from doing an exercise that I probably shouldn’t have been doing at the time, that’s part of the learning process. … It just wasn’t the smartest of things."
Jimcanuck Old-Timey Member Posted September 1, 2018 Posted September 1, 2018 Ahhh...thanks. So why can't he be traded now? suspect the PTBNL depends on JD's performance, or games played.... with someone like Merryweather the guy if JD is healthy the rest of the season

Described him as "a near-term prospect that will impact our major-league team in a significant way."

Described him as "a near-term prospect that will impact our major-league team in a significant way." That's too bad. I had a guy who works not for the Jays, but in the Jays office saying that it was going to be Noah Naylor if JD played in season and playoffs and the $2.7M was to cover Naylor's signing bonus. Never listen to Stats guys.
Todd Van Anus Verified Member Posted September 1, 2018 Posted September 1, 2018 that being the case it makes no sense to delay the announcement Can injured players not be traded during the season? Does Cleveland maybe plan to use him in the post-season?
TheHurl Site Manager Posted September 1, 2018 Posted September 1, 2018 that being the case it makes no sense to delay the announcement There are two cases in which it would have to be a PTBNL. If the player was on the 40 man or was a 2018 draftee (which is why I believed the Noah Naylor rumour despite it seeming like far too much). Atkins comment seems to mean that it is a player on the 40 man.

gruber92 Old-Timey Member Posted September 1, 2018 Posted September 1, 2018 I don't laugh at reasonable opinions. I laugh at half baked theories based on no evidence. Say, Kevin Pillar becoming a perennial all star based on one ST game. I'd never say anything crazy like that and then double down on every opportunity. Lol.. I had you sweating for six weeks though. Oh, you mean like Handsome Jake was to be the next Micky Mantle? Whatever man, lighten the f*** up Mr. Podcast.
