John_Havok Old-Timey Member Posted June 14, 2018 Posted June 14, 2018 Wasnt able to get the box score from the DSL as the Jays MILB page was being a bitch this morning, but here's a wonderful snippet from the 5th inning. Players of the day: Chavez Young, Gunnar Heidt, Dwight Smith Jr, Lourdes Gurriel Jr, Honourable Mentions: Ryan Noda, Brock Lundquist, Joshua Palacios, Kacy Clemens, Eduardo Pinto, Jonathan Davis, Cavan Biggio

Bobthe4th Old-Timey Member Posted June 14, 2018 Posted June 14, 2018 Seems a bit pointless to call him up now, but I wanted to see Al Alburquerque get a chance in the bullpen this season.
burlingtonbandit Old-Timey Member Posted June 14, 2018 Posted June 14, 2018 I think Gurriel should be the starting 2nd baseman over Travis. He doesn't walk much but has more power and is a way better defender. Plus he gives you a backup SS as well.

Brownie19 Old-Timey Member Posted June 14, 2018 Posted June 14, 2018 At a minimum Gurriel should be on the 25 man over Urshela. I disagree. 2018 is over for the Jays. Gurriel should be in the minors working on some semblance of plate discipline. We all know 20 K% with 2 BB% isn't going to lead to success at the ML level.

Brownie19 Old-Timey Member Posted June 14, 2018 Posted June 14, 2018 He can develop at the majors too.. He's almost 25 years old. Maybe, but he's also missed almost full year and a half of development between coming over and being hurt last year. The best idea is to work on it in the offseason, but if they want him to change his approach, it's significantly easier to do that in the minors. The pressure to succeed at the ML level is too intense.

Brownie19 Old-Timey Member Posted June 14, 2018 Posted June 14, 2018 (edited) Javier Baez seems to make it work. Javy Baez is a career 92 wRC+ hitter. But he's good defensively at multiple positions (great at some) and is a good base runner - which is where he gets most of his value from. From the reports I've read, Gurriel isn't good defensively at multiple positions and thus is going to need to be a better hitter than Baez to be an MLB utility player (and a much better hitter to be a starting player). Gurriel's going to need to get his K% down to the low teens if he's going to keep his BB% below 5%. Edited June 14, 2018 by Brownie19

I agree he needs to cut down on the strikeouts but facing junkballers at AAA isn't necessarily better for his development.

By August 1st he should probably be playing everyday here if not sooner.
