Obviously the pitching in the Midwest league isn't great in that its erratic enough for a guy who can't hit to walk 30% of the time. i wonder if it's just being passive at the plate or if he does have that good of an eye? Noda is the new Greek god of walks.
Carlos Danger Old-Timey Member Posted May 18, 2018 Posted May 18, 2018 (edited) I really appreciate these daily updates and enjoy seeing how many position player prospects we have that are doing well. The scary thing is for me, it appears we need more help on the pitching side at the MLB level and I only see Jordan Romano and Sean- Reid Foley as even possible options.. and of course we lost PPED for 80 games... This is vice versa to the AA era when it seemed we had loads of pitching prospects but no positional players... Edited May 18, 2018 by Carlos Danger

SRF really is the only pitching prospect even close to maybe possibly potentially getting a chance to see if he could sorta be a useful ball thrower.
Laika Community Moderator Posted May 18, 2018 Posted May 18, 2018 Don't sleep on Borucki! Zeuch also isn't that far off.
burlingtonbandit Old-Timey Member Posted May 18, 2018 Posted May 18, 2018 For as great as the Jays have position player prospects the pitching really looks bleak. Need to sign/trade for actual good pitching this offseason.

Not sure why everyone favors SRF over Romano so much.. I have heard the deep dive into his K rate vs walk rate etc.. However, the fact of the matter is he is pitching 6 plus innings at his level per game with a very low era and earning (I know wins don't reflect the pitcher) the team wins/giving the team a position to win.. At the end of the day, he is doing what you want from a SP, and consistently...
TheHurl Site Manager Posted May 18, 2018 Posted May 18, 2018 I really wish that Brody Rodning was a thing. Such a great handle

You have a weird definition of bleak: SRF / Borucki / Romano = 2019 Pearson / Zeuch / Pardinho = future Got to think at least 2 of those turn into useful players.

Averaged closer to a .330 in lower levels. Give him another 70-100 plate appearances and see where things sit.

Outside Pearson and (who is out for a while with an elbow injury) you are looking at potential 4/5s. I wouldn't even call Romano a SP prospect at this point.

What the heck is going on with Pardinho anyways? We signed him almost a full year ago and I can't find any record of him having recorded any stats at any level. What is the normal progression for a 16 year old?
BTS Community Moderator Posted May 18, 2018 Posted May 18, 2018 The team might have to trade for a pitcher if they're looking to compete next year. The way things are going, they project to have a rotation of Sanchez and Stroman. And the mid-tier FA market is pretty thin: Happ Estrada Gio Gonzalez McCarthy Lynn Pomeranz Richards Ross Ryu Would be nice to get Happ signed before the offseason.

I've been saying it all season, Happ on a two year deal would be great for this team regardless of the direction. We'll need the steady innings he provides.

Carlos Danger Old-Timey Member Posted May 18, 2018 Posted May 18, 2018 I am asking this in all seriousness. Why dont you consider Romano a SP prospect? What more should he do at his level as a SP? He is averaging 6 innings per start, had a no hitter through 6, and has an era under 2 after 45 plus innings pitched??
Carlos Danger Old-Timey Member Posted May 18, 2018 Posted May 18, 2018 Speaking of minor league pitchers... Two Class A pitchers have each been suspended 80 games for violating the minor league drug program. Joel Espinal of the Toronto system and Domingo Jimenez of the Cleveland organization were penalized Friday by the commissioner’s office. Both right-handers tested positive for Stanozolol, a performance-enhancing substance. Espinal was at Dunedin of the Florida State League and Jimenez was with Lake County of the Midwest League.
burlingtonbandit Old-Timey Member Posted May 18, 2018 Posted May 18, 2018 2/28 with a 15M team option and 2M buyout. Get er done. Is that 2 guaranteed years plus an option for a 3rd or 1+1? Yeah something similar to the Lackey deal in Chicago seems fair. They really need something better than 3 Garcia type FA fliers if they are serious about competing. Even Sanchez and Stroman aren't dependable right now.

An extreme flyball pitcher without any plus pitches or plus command doesn't project well to succeed at the majors. He's also sporting a babip against of .162 right now... which is 100% impossible to sustain. He could be a future pen guy though as his fastball/slider might play up in short stints.

Instructional League, bruh... he'll be playing SS Ball this year, I'd assume.
