Orgfiller Old-Timey Member Posted May 12, 2018 Posted May 12, 2018 As the son of a feller that has been a Leaf's fan since the 60's, it's Leaf's. Well it definitely isn't "Leaf's" lol.

Jonn Old-Timey Member Posted May 12, 2018 Posted May 12, 2018 As the son of a feller that has been a Leaf's fan since the 60's, it's Leaf's. You’re not going to change his mind. He doesn’t care what they are actually called. He thinks it’s grammatically incorrect and he’s right on that point.

Jonn Old-Timey Member Posted May 12, 2018 Posted May 12, 2018 Its really nice to have fans in the ballpark tonight. Really depressing watching games with nobody in the seats. I couldn’t imagine being a Rays fan.
Spanky99 Old-Timey Member Posted May 12, 2018 Author Posted May 12, 2018 History has it that Conn Smythe named the team after the Maple Leaf badge worn by soldiers in the Canadian Army during World War I. So, to follow Chambers’s lesson that proper nouns take regular plurals, more than one Maple Leaf badge would be referred to as Maple Leafs. By that same token, two Maple Leaf players are referred to as Maple Leafs, not Maple Leaves. That is how we get the Toronto Maple Leafs, who play host to the Capitals for Game 3 at 7 p.m. Monday. Other examples of proper nouns taking regular pronouns (provided by Chambers and annotated by The Post): • A stack of Life Magazine editions would be a stack of “Lifes” (regular plural) instead of “Lives” (irregular plural).

Oh, I'm sure that all the people who are laughing at the fact that the Leaves don't know how to spell are well aware of their history. You know, the history of being named after some incredibly obscure army ********, especially when there's no indication anywhere that this is the case. The logo is just a leaf. But it's ok. Continue living in your dream world where spelling things correctly is just an inconvenience.

doobzacheria Verified Member Posted May 12, 2018 Posted May 12, 2018 As someone who's been speaking English my entire life, it's leaves. I agree with you. Except in the context of the team. Which is a name and so becomes a proper noun, rather than a regular one. And so normal pluralization is not upheld. And to be honest, I always call them the Maple Laughs. Sadly, as an Oiler's fan, I've nothing to laugh about.
Boxcar Old-Timey Member Posted May 12, 2018 Posted May 12, 2018 I can't wait until fall starts again. I love how all the leafs change colour.
Abomination Old-Timey Member Posted May 12, 2018 Posted May 12, 2018 Granderson really needs to start playing against some lefties too (non-elite ones at any rate, keep him the hell away from guys like Sale). We really need more of his ability to work the count.

jaysguy44 Old-Timey Member Posted May 12, 2018 Posted May 12, 2018 Leafs are dumb though, I agree with you Box. It's ok to be wrong sometimes
