We know Spin Rates improves pitches.

We know sticky substances improve spin rates

We know everyone who moves to the Astros from another team, gets improved spin rates

Correlation?

Regardless there are two important things here...it's great that there are pitchers that are learning and understanding spin rates and Trevor Bauer should keep quiet about these things and let Boddy make the accusation but he might be the most entertaining idiot out there.

Two May Series between the Indians and Astros. Should be interesting.

I'm not sure I get Boddys angle here as it seems like he's quite affiliated with the Astros.

It wasn't posted but Bauer said he would be releasing data that shows proof of substance use, soon.

I guess the point is to put pressure on the MLB to mandate it/something.

Also, Bauer said it is "technically illegal" by the book, so the Astros could face some penalties if his proof is legitimate.

He doesn't have actual proof though, just some data correlations and some not very subtle suggestions about Houston's recent track record of trading for pitchers and suddenly watching their spin rates increase and subsequently their performance get markedly better.

I think his point is not that Houston should be in trouble, but that it should just be allowed.

Data correlations aren't really evidence of substance use. Pictures, videos, and/or actual admissions from pitchers would be evidence, assuming any such videos or pictures amount to more than seeing 1 guy do something 1 time.

Fair enough. I agree.

He's in the Astros dugout tonight helping them with the cameras he first started working with. He never said proof of substance use...proof that substance improves spin rates.

All data points towards spin rates and in turn swinging strikes being much worse in cold and wet weather. MLB claims the weather was a factor for so many K's so far this season. Something is up with the balls again I'm sure. All I know is that there is "liquid glass" which keeps my phone from scratching and smudging even though I can't see it. Good on the Astros if they have found something that can't be seen but provides grip.

He's alluded many times though to Gerrit Cole using some kind of substance to doctor the baseball.

Considering the history of cheating in the Astros organization, this wouldn't surprise me at all. Good for them though, it got them a world series title.

Interesting topic. As someone just pointed out - Verlander seems to be completely dominant again. Have his spin rates spiked since he moved to Houston? Chad Morton?

My other question is - do they think this is the sunscreen/rosin combo....or something different? I thought it was widely known that most pitchers are using that combo?

You also heard announcers say the hitters would prefer if the pitchers had a good grip on the ball when they are throwing 95 MPH. I highly doubt that true.

If you can show me that:

1. There is a useable, hideable substance that increases spin rates ~200-300 RPMs; and

2. Every pitcher that joins the Astros sees their spin rate improve ~200-300 RPMs

then that's not exactly proof, but I'd sure be intrigued.
