Bobthe4th Old-Timey Member Posted April 26, 2018 Posted April 26, 2018 Feel bad for Pompey, he's finally back from injury and on a good run, but is buried by the outfield depth we currently have. He could continue to hit all year and potentially still not even get a September call up with Alford and Smith Jr also on the 40 man with him, and the multiple outfielders currently on the 25 man.

If you free up the DH Spot, you can potentially give Gibbons another spot to focus on the OF. Neither Pearce or Granderson really need to be out there if they don't have to We really dont need a full time DH who isn't going to hit. We can be using the lineup spot for development.

He's out of options after this season. If he stays healthy and hits well, I'm sure he'll get a chance next spring.

metafour Verified Member Posted April 26, 2018 Posted April 26, 2018 Kevin Smith went 3 for 5 with three doubles yesterday..........
Sammy225 Old-Timey Member Posted April 26, 2018 Posted April 26, 2018 Is Kevin Smith a thing i should be paying attention to?
TheHurl Site Manager Posted April 26, 2018 Posted April 26, 2018 Is Kevin Smith a thing i should be paying attention to? I put him at number 10 at the end of last year. Which likely means he'll be a beast...err I mean bust. He's a defensive SS with raw power. That's a good combo. If the K's stay down he's worth watching. He's a college guy that came out not a complete product so he'll be a guy that knocks on the door at 24 at the earliest. Maybe Matt Duffy that can stick at SS type
metafour Verified Member Posted April 26, 2018 Posted April 26, 2018 Is Kevin Smith a thing i should be paying attention to? Him and Warmoth both had equally impressive Cape Cod showings and were borderline first rounders going into their JR seasons. Warmoth continued performing and solidified himself as a first rounder whereas Smith had a terrible season and fell to the fourth. He is a legitimate SS with above-average pop so there are real tools there. The swing-and-miss is a legit concern but his strikeouts are down so far this season (he's at like a 20% K rate right now I think). He's also relatively young as he was still 20 at time time of the draft and doesn't turn 22 until July I believe.
Jimcanuck Old-Timey Member Posted April 26, 2018 Posted April 26, 2018 Is Kevin Smith a thing i should be paying attention to? Not really, but the other Kevin on Dunedin is. Elite skills at SS.

I was just going to say exactly all of this A year too late he is

Gibby doesn't seem to like Pompey very much though Prob not who he's want up
TheHurl Site Manager Posted April 26, 2018 Posted April 26, 2018 Not really, but the other Kevin on Dunedin is. Elite skills at SS. Smith was probably the best defender in the NCAA at SS when he was drafted. Vicuna is slick and probably can be an elite defender. However, in the end... Raw Power & Good to Great defense > Zero power (he's legitimately a 20 power guy) and elite defending. f***ed up that they are both at the same level though.

Vicuna is getting a little interesting as he's starting to hit, but the kid has 0 career HRs in 823 minor league at bats and just 24 extra base hits. The offensive difference between that and a guy like Smith who could hit 15-20 HR's a year (with a ton of doubles) in the MLB is greater than the difference between their defensive values.

When can we cut Grichuk loose?
Ray Verified Member Posted April 26, 2018 Posted April 26, 2018 When can we cut Grichuk loose? We’re not. Gonna give him every chance to turn it around. At worst he’s gonna be a defensive replacement if he doesn’t get it going with the bat.

I'm a little surprised Smith doesn't get a bit more hype. If he keeps that K% down below 20%, he could fly up our rankings. I didn't realise his defense was that good.

I really do like the profile (have not watched him in game) but he's also a guy that had a .795 OPS in a weak division (Big 10) through 3 years of college and only had a 104 wRC as a 21 year old in Rookie Ball. The start is promising but he's got to do it over more than just 70 PA's before getting much hype.

Krylian Old-Timey Member Posted April 27, 2018 Posted April 27, 2018 Yeah, as a 22 yr old college guy in A ball Smith is not moving my staff at all. Have to agree. He may end up becoming something, but it's hard for me to get excited about a college guy in a ball. He' might be knocking on the door for a utility role at the age of 24-25. Utility players aren't boner worthy.

Just looking at the 22 year olds in A ball over the past 8 or so years, here's a list of guys that I know went to college. Kole Calhoun JD Martinez Yan Gomes Kevin Pillar Brandon Belt Andrelton Simmons Evan Gattis Jonathan Lucroy Khris Davis Matt Carpenter Matt Adams Darwin Barney Josh Donaldson Justin Bour Kevin Keirmaier AJ Pollock Paul Goldschmidt Adam Eaton Jake Lamb Brandon Crawford Adam Duvall Matt Duffy Jason Kipnis Kyle Seager Chris Taylor Logan Forsythe Jedd Gyorko Jordy Mercer Brock Holt Jackie Bradley jr. Corey Dickerson Whit Merrifield Brian Dozier Marcus Semien Hope that makes you feel better about older minor leaguers
