AledmysDiaz Verified Member Posted April 19, 2018 Posted April 19, 2018 I kinda agree with Tercet. No one is saying Hernandez is an above average bat He probably has an Eric Thames ceiling. You have to admit the mlb dynamics have changed. A hitter with a 30.7% K rate was the best hitter in the AL last year. Strkeouts have to be viewed differently now. He had better K rates than Aaron Judge in the minors, and both have a similar K rate in the majors.

Best case scenario he is Javier Baez? In reality he is a lighter version of Adam Duvall?
AledmysDiaz Verified Member Posted April 19, 2018 Posted April 19, 2018 We are in an era where hitters that elevate the ball, can really make it go a distance. Hernandez is more valuable due to the time he is playing in. You have to stop viewing him with the mindset you established five years ago. 30%k rate is perfectly fine in MLB now.
AledmysDiaz Verified Member Posted April 19, 2018 Posted April 19, 2018 Best case scenario he is Javier Baez? In reality he is a lighter version of Adam Duvall? Why is that so bad? We have a couple of elite bats coming, we are also going to need our share of just young average hitters who dont embarrass themselves. Honestly I have all the time in the world for Hernandez, even at 100WRC he is far more valuable than the dinasours on this team.

I wish he were a plus defender, because he'll have to mash to be a good regular.

BTS Community Moderator Posted April 19, 2018 Posted April 19, 2018 What's wrong with his defense? There's nothing wrong with the defense. It's probably average or a bit below.

The Cats Ass Old-Timey Member Posted April 19, 2018 Posted April 19, 2018 2017 version of Carlos Gomez.
Spanky99 Old-Timey Member Posted April 19, 2018 Posted April 19, 2018 There's nothing wrong with the defense. It's probably average or a bit below. Baseball America... Hernandez is a versatile outfielder who has the speed and range to play above-average defense center field and the arm to be a plus defender in right. By standing still with a solid but unspectacular first half at Triple-A Fresno, Hernandez has been passed by Fisher on the Astros’ outfield depth chart. He’s been fine this year and is a better defender than Fisher, but when left field potentially opens up next spring, Fisher’s superior offensive production gives him the edge. Fansided... The outfielder played decently, showing range in center field and hit for some pop, hitting four home runs. At times he looked like a rookie. And at other times he showed ability. Hernandez proved he is fully capable of being slotted into the already athletic outfield group the Astros have without a huge drop-off. KATOH... Hernandez has technically had stints in Houston both this season and last, but has spent most of 2017 with the Astros’ Triple-A affiliate. He only played one game with the Astros this season, coming in as a defensive replacement for Carlos Beltran. In Triple-A, he flashed his typical power-speed combination, racking up 12 homers and 12 steals in 79 games (though he was caught stealing seven times). In addition to his power and speed, Hernandez also draws a healthy amount of walks and has played solid right-field defense this year. He struck out in an acceptable 21% of plate appearances this year, which is a huge improvement from where he was a few years ago. I could go on, but everyone has him as an above average fielder? His K rate is the big hole in his game.
saskjayfan Old-Timey Member Posted April 19, 2018 Posted April 19, 2018 There's nothing wrong with the defense. It's probably average or a bit below. seems to have a plus arm and plus speed. I haven't seen a lot of scouting reports that suggest below average defensive skills. Age 23 AA-AAA 540PA 53BB 144K .255/.330/.448 Age 24 AAA 410PA 47BB 98K .279/.366/.489 Age 23 AA-AAA 481PA 45BB 80K .307/.377/.459 Age 24 AAA 456PA 47BB 102K .265/.351/.490

The player above him for those who haven't figured it it is Aaron Judge. Point is projecting young players is really hard. You never know when things click in for the guys with really good athletic makeup. It can be never or at any moment. When Judge hit the majors for his first full season his walk rate skyrocket as did his power numbers and his K rate was still terrible, but it didn't really matter. I'm not saying the same will happen for Teoscar, I'm just saying it's too early to have too strong of an opinion on the guy. The guy has great bat speed, good speed and a strong arm. I'm playing him until he stops hitting. He might just be better than some of you think.
CraigG Verified Member Posted April 19, 2018 Posted April 19, 2018 Why do you say he doesn't walk? His walk rate in 221 PA in the majors is close to league average.

Grant77 Old-Timey Member Posted April 19, 2018 Posted April 19, 2018 I don't know exactly what Hernandez is just yet, but it's clear to me that he's the one to go back to the minors. Granderson and Pearce are playing well and we need to see more of Morales before deciding to eat over 20 million. We're going to need him again this season, so we should preserve our depth.

You're probably right but it's going to be really hard to take his bat out of the lineup right now.
