this is actually a pretty cool thread. It's true that you can watch baseball forever but random s*** always seems to happen that you've never seen before.

 

 

I watch about 10 or so games a week, tape them then run through the live action, something unusual happens more often than I expect.

 

the worst local one over the past decade was a Jays pitcher tossing the ball, for replacement, into the dugout while on the mound, Papi immediately called for his two base advance from second.

i was informed that the combination of 19 year old Soto (Nats) and Gleybar's age 21 (Yankees) was the lowest combined age of two home run hitters in a game since the 1800s, a player with the nickname of Egyptian was part of the 1800s duo. Or something like that, not a stat I thrive on but a good factoid.

 

In addition, Soto hammered two home runs, the second to the opposite field gap well past the Yankees bullpen, which is a rarity in that park for location, landing just in front of the Casio sign. the TV crew marvelled at this for awhile.

used to have two VHS recorders, sometimes the logistics and wear and tear made it awful

 

much nicer setting the PVR to 6 hours for a MLB game and watching it while it is still taping

Making them watch the O's broadcast?

 

I have never seen a MLB team allow a run to score on an errant rountine toss from catcher to pitcher, that was the closest it's come. If the runner at third had been a bit more aggressive he may have made it in for a run.

Yeah I was trying to remember the details cause I was sure it had happened before. It wasn't even that egregious if I remember correctly, like he barely dropped the ball. His head just wasn't in the game.

Bases loaded two out for the Padres, single to left, one run scores, second runner called out on a close play at the plate, runner at second continues to third and is thrown out for a “4th” out.

 

Replay overturns the call at home, run scores and 4th out ends the inning.

lol... wow! I'm pretty sure that hasn't happened before. I guess it's possible in the replay era, but I don't recall a play like that happening before.

I’ve asked a few oldtimers and they dont recall seeing a 4th out just in case

 

The ump call of out at home probably led to the trail runner moving just for the heck of it, he probably would have stopped at second hearing a safe call at the plate

Just watched the tape again, didn’t erase it

 

The runner at second held up and when he saw the third out called at the plate moved toward third, not at a competitive speed, thinking the inning was over.

 

The play at the plate was a good example of how replay can get it right on a very tough call.

 

Keith and Ron attacked the replay decision for awhile, possibly the runner could be back at second on the replay reversal. At the very least arguing that the spirit of the game and intent of the rules doesn’t require a ruling like that.

 

Just another unforeseen thing replay has now brought to the game...

Last night Rockies pitcher Gray with men on 1st and 2nd is called for a balk on an inside move to second.

 

Fletcher had a tough night with home plate duties all around.

A couple of weeks old now, but this is the first time I've seen a team ask for a review, have the ruling overturned, but end up with a WORSE outcome than the one they were appealing!
