Spanky99 Old-Timey Member Posted September 27, 2018 Posted September 27, 2018 Diaz's 103 wRC+, if qualified, would rank 12th in MLB among shortstops...just behind Trea Turner and his superstarish 104 wRC+. Even in his one completely fluke season, Goins was just an 85 wRC+ hitter. *whoosh*
Laika Community Moderator Posted September 27, 2018 Posted September 27, 2018 Good call. Either way - for me. Giles is very comparable to Osuna. To think we essentially replaced Osuna while added a very talented arm is exciting - even if you ignore the situation that Shatkins/Ownership were in. When you factor in the later, it's a massive win. The general opinion on Ken Giles in baseball is kind of weird. Before 2016 he was traded to Houston for a huge package. His DIPS numbers and indicators have not changed a whole lot since then but his perceived value has f***ing plummeted, presumable mostly due to a random ERA spike, some timely blown saves, and other on/off the field stuff like him punching things and punching himself. It really makes no sense that he isn't just commonly accepted as an elite and valuable relief pitcher. Osuna and him project for basically the same FIP/ERA and they both have warts. I guess Osuna's warts are just purely off the field and Giles' warts are arguably (weak argument, but arguably...) on the field?
Jimcanuck Old-Timey Member Posted September 27, 2018 Posted September 27, 2018 It's a little unfair to expect 4 WAR from a player who never even had a 4 WAR season in his career before. I'm just giving a plausible answer to BTS's question. I certainly did not expect 4 WAR, but neither did I expect < 2. By the way, Grichuk had 3 WAR in 2015 in about 2/3 of a season.
Krylian Old-Timey Member Posted September 27, 2018 Posted September 27, 2018 I think he had a bit of a headcase stigma about him and then last year he got murdered in the playoffs and was pretty much unusable. Then this year he punched himself in the face. His reputation spiraled out of control a little bit. Well...to be fair, punching yourself in the face is a little high on the retard scale
Abomination Old-Timey Member Posted September 27, 2018 Posted September 27, 2018 Well...to be fair, punching yourself in the face is a little high on the retard scale Good way to climb higher on that scale too. He may not have the neurons to spare. I have to think the plan is to rebuild his value, then trade him next deadline.
Thaddeus Malice Verified Member Posted September 28, 2018 Posted September 28, 2018 Why would Grichuk get a D+ for contributing ~ 2 fWAR in like 450 PA? It's been corrected to a B+ now. Which makes sense and was likely given the blurb was pretty positive.

That makes more sense. The article had sort of a high school author kind of vibe to me. The Morales section is just weak writing. Grichuk has done amazingly well post-injury after that atrocious start. I'll bet he's hitting close to .300 if you subtract April.

bzapple Verified Member Posted September 28, 2018 Posted September 28, 2018 Lots of low grades of course, Martin and Grichuk seem particularly harsh though (D- and D+) He actually gives Grichuk a B+. Really low-effort, clickbaity article though. Keri can do better.

Spanky99 Old-Timey Member Posted September 28, 2018 Posted September 28, 2018 Is .268 close to .300? I'm not sure what you're trying to get at here, I'm just showing how great he's been since coming off the DL. There's a lot more to a batter than just average, his ISO, wOBA, wRC+ numbers were off the hook.

We really stole him in that trade. I hope he has a better start next year. He may be like EE, and be a consistent slow starter.
Sorrow Verified Member Posted September 29, 2018 Posted September 29, 2018 The more I see of Hernandez this season the more I don't want to see him on the Jays MLB roster next year. Replacement level DH with a league average bat (90 wRC+ after his hot start). I generally would say play him until someone bumps him but f*** I'd rather see DSJ getting everyday at bats to see if he might be anything.

I'd rather sign Michael Brantley, trade Pillar and go with Brantley, Grichuk and McKinney or maybe sign Brett Gardner cheap as well.

Trade Morales and put Hernandez at DH, while standing pat in the outfield. Use that Brantley money and any Morales savings to sign pitchers.

Use that Brantley money and any Morales savings to sign pitchers. Getting rid of Morales to free up DH would be great but who is going to trade for him? The Royals are slashing payroll and rebuilding, and a DH only who is average at best isn’t really worth anything. That 3rd year on the contract is the biggest Shatkins mistake so far IMO. While I understand they had identified him as an EE replacement and wanted to get a deal done early, with the market for his type of player dried up, I just wish the 3rd year (if it was needed to secure him) had been an option instead.
Grant77 Old-Timey Member Posted September 29, 2018 Posted September 29, 2018 1. Show me the teams lining up to take Morales 2. Not sure how a 90 wRC+ bat is supposed to play at DH. Morales is in the final year of his deal and put up a fairly strong season. He has value at the right salary. Teoscar Hernandez doesn't have a 90 wRC+, he has a 102 wRC+. I'm not opposed to an upgrade, but he's a young player that could still improve. If not, we also have Tellez making a strong case for some DH at-bats.

Your plan seems to be throwing next year away where I feel like the right additions could take this club to a WC...kinda like the Cubs after 2014 when they signed Lester.

Your plan seems to be throwing next year away where I feel like the right additions could take this club to a WC...kinda like the Cubs after 2014 when they signed Lester. All of the projections on fangraphs are higher than that, but I digress. Regarding the DH situation in particular, I simply feel that we don't lose much by replacing Morales with Hernandez/Tellez. We will also save a bit of money, which leads me to my second point. We have put up a 100 wRC+ this season, good for top 10 in the league. That's not outstanding or anything, but we have a promising young core that should improve and will also add Vlad Jr. to the mix. In my opinion, the majority of our offseason additions should be focused on the pitching staff. Right now we've got an overperforming Borucki, a disaster of a headcase in Stroman, a constantly injured Sanchez, and a collection of flawed prospects and journeyman. There will be no contending in 2018 unless we add 2 solid rotation pieces.
Boxcar Old-Timey Member Posted September 29, 2018 Posted September 29, 2018 Yeah, should have known you'd get stuck on 90 vs. 93.
Grant77 Old-Timey Member Posted September 29, 2018 Posted September 29, 2018 Yeah, should have known you'd get stuck on 90 vs. 93. I take the time to make a detailed response and you are fixated on that of all things? You obviously misread the split in the post before yours as his full season mark and then tried to cover your mistake by lying about the projections. Then I leave it alone and let you off the hook, but you bring it up again for some incomprehensible reason. This is too funny.

That will surely diminish how stupid you look. Let's hope that people don't realize you're taking the lowest of all of the projections. I'm headed to bed, but please keep desperately digging your own grave. This is fun to watch.

I'm taking Steamer, the only good public projection and the only one I ever use. Also, contrary to your statement, Hernandez is not young and he'd have to basically become a different hitter in order to be of any use. As it stands, he's a replacement level plug. No thanks on having a league average hitter at best in the DH slot.

Abomination Old-Timey Member Posted September 29, 2018 Posted September 29, 2018 I love that. I'd love to see Martin be the next manager, but I think he still wants to play a few years. I wonder what it would cost us to acquire Kevin Cash?
