I guess - but it's a good strategy that gives the team a better chance at winning. You should be able to avoid this situation with strong communication and a commitment to add the $20K onto his next contract or something.

Phillies are in contention. Every game matters. Tell him you're not doing this to save money that you're trying to win in a division that's unexpectedly up for grabs. He won't even miss a ML start. He just has to ride the bus in the minors for a bit which I'm sure sucks. Add 20k to his league min salary next year as a sign of good faith.

Especially since they traded a superior pitcher in Gerrit Cole for a much worse return. That team does not have the makings of a contender in the next 1-2 years, not sure what the hell they're thinking.

Pittsburg also traded Liriano and two highly regarded (at the time) prospects for Hutch.

Not really. The shine was off both of them, and they only looked like borderline major leaguers in a best case scenario. Still true, I'd argue. It was a super cheapass transaction though, to be sure.

Two times under AA a pitcher coming back from TJS threw 190ish innings his first year back, and both fell off a cliff shortly after (Marcum, Hutch). Marcum at least had another good year or so before falling off but don’t think that was a coincidence.
