The term “trigger” has become slang for eliciting a negative response from someone. It’s similar to the term “troll”. “RT to troll a Yankee fan” would basically mean the same thing.

 

Sheryl can ascribe all the various meanings to that word that she wants, but the fact remains that she glossed over the most applicable definition of that word in how it was used. It simply meant “troll” a baseball fan.

 

If MLB tweeted out, “Mike Trout KILLED this baseball last night” would it warrant an article condemning MLB for it’s lack of sensitivity toward murder victims? Of course not, because that wouldn’t serve whatever ridiculous agenda that Sheryl is trying to push.

 

Fangraphs should stop running word police articles like this and get back to objective statistical analysis. If its writers really do get triggered by the word trigger they would probably be better off writing for Mother Jones. Fangraphs just shouldn’t be the place for articles like this.
