David Wright (shoulder) will be activated on September 25 for the Mets' final homestand of the year. Mets chief operating officer Jeff Wilpon made that announcement at a press conference Thursday afternoon at Citi Field. Wright will be available off the bench for a three-game set against the Braves and is slated for a start at third base on September 29 against the Marlins, the second-to-last day of the regular season. Wright hasn't played in a major league game since May 27, 2016 due to serious neck, shoulder, and back injuries. He is expected to retire this winter.

 

For a stretch there - David Wright was my favourite player. It has been difficult to watch his HOF career be derailed by a chronic and debilitating back injury. I hope to catch some of his final games, while donning my knockoff Mets pinstripe Wright jersey. It will forever hang in my closet (probably never to be worn again) next to my prized Doc Halladay and s***** Lawrie jerseys.

Lol the Rays might end up with a better record than Cleveland despite CLE being in the worst division in sports right now and the Rays will miss the playoffs entirely.

 

Get rid of divisions and let the five best teams make it (4th and 5th play the WC game).

 

I think alot of teams would be for this in general, but the problem with no divisions is balancing the schedule and ensuring travel affects all teams roughly the same, which is virtually impossible.

This is already true of the WC anyway, so imo it's not that big a deal. Some teams will simply be at a slight disadvantage, but the benefits probably outweigh the negatives.

 

I'd like to see them simply eliminate all the divisions, drop the season to 150 games, and let the top 16 teams into the playoffs. Let everyone play each other 5 times (5 games and days in a row), with the home/road series swapped each year.

16 teams in the playoffs is too many IMO.

 

Agree the regular season is too long, I’d ideally like to go lower than 150 but it’d mess up season stats if it did.

I absolutely hate how 16 teams make the NBA and NHL playoffs. The regular season means next to nothing. Only the truly horrid teams miss the playoffs.

Imo pretty much all of this is very undesirable. Normally, especially since the second WC, the division thing doesn't really come up. It's generally not a huge problem and encourages rivalries which are undoubtedly good for the game.

It wouldn’t be quite as bad as the NBA as anyone in the MLB playoffs could win, but yeah it’d also drag on too long.

Messing up the stats doesn't really matter (it used to be 154 games anyway for about 40 years), but the lost games revenue wise does. Extending the playoffs offsets that, especially with more teams in the race late (which means higher attendance). I also don't think it changes rivalries. Right now I think we're in a sort of rivalry fatigue, where we see those division teams so much that it's no longer special.

 

I actually like the extended playoff format of the NHL and NBA. I think there's something exciting about making a deep run, as well as being able to cheer for clear cut underdogs. I realize not everyone feels this way.

Wasn't this in response to a big bat flip by the opponent earlier in the series (or in that game?). Someone showed me it, but I can't find the video online now. One of the Baycats players follows the guy the whole way home from 3rd base chirping the piss out of him.
