Mauricio Cabrera and his triple-digit fastball DFA'ed for Moylan.. someone's gonna take a flier on him. Should the Jays take a shot if he's available?

He has no command and doesn't strike anybody out.

Absolutely. He's basically a Brandon League type guy imo (at same age). No downside to giving him a shot, you may get rewarded.

Won't matter anyway for Toronto--some lesser team will likely claim him quickly.

New pace of play stuff and related rules:

Pitch clock - deferred until they see how other things work / don't work

Video review rooms - new equipment (which will be monitored) was installed to prevent teams from using video review to steal or relay signs

Mount visits - 6 per team per 9 innings, additional 1 per inning for extra inning games. Any manager, coach, or player visit counts, but pitching changes, cleaning cleats if rainy, or injury checks do not. Ump can grant additional visits if he believes a cross-up has occurred.

Between innings and Pitching changes - 2:05 for local games, 2:25 for national games, 2:55 for postseason games. Pitcher must throw their final warmup pitch no later than 20 seconds before this, and must start throwing first pitch when clock hits 0.

Additional Warmup - No limit to warmup pitches or minimum guarantee, but final pitch must occur in time frame above.

Umpire can grant time extensions if he believes there is a danger to the player not to do so, or if there's an equipment issue, etc.

Seems like a step in the right direction. 6 mound visits (excluding pitching changes) still seems like a lot though. Baby steps.

5/110 for Martinez. Has an opt out clause after year 2.

Has another opt out after year 3 too.

If he has a good season and opts outs works good for the Red Sox so they can resign Sale or someone else. I would assume that's what they were thinking when they gave that.

I'd say 95% of the time player opt outs, never work for the team, in this situation I believe you could be right. He'll certainly be sticking around to collect the first 50 million. If he continues to mash baseballs for two years, and opts out it could still sting the Org, concerning value they would've received without one, if he poops the bed and opts not to leave, he leaves them handcuffed for the rest of the 60 million/contract. Meh... Org always gets f***ed in player options, who am I kidding. :P

Yeah works for both parties really, he must be assuming he can get more money if he opts out. As it's front loaded even if he decides to stay to chase rings or declines rapidly it doesn't hamstring the Red Sox budget wise too badly. If the AAV was evenly spread out then $22m for a DH from 2020 onwards would have been a big commitment.

Who will be worth more wins in the next two years, Dyson or Martinez?

Its closer than we realize.

Dyson--he can actually play defense, JDM cannot. Plus, Dyson, when he gets on base, can wreak havoc on the basepaths..

Jesus f*** his average fastball was 101.2 in 2016 with the Braves.

He'll also be 34 this year and can't hit a lick. JDM's value has always been in his bat, which is elite and projects to remain elite for the next 2 years. The probability of Dyson losing a step defensively and on the base paths over the next 2 years is significantly higher and unfortunately, he's proven there's no upside in his bat. Given JDM's been better over the past 3 years and projects to be better this year, you vote suggests you're either very bias towards players on our arch rivals, or you're well....ah, never mind.

Don't get me wrong. Dyson at 2 years, $7.5M is a very solid move for the Diamondbacks, but let's not pretend he'll be better than JDM please.

JDM's value is destroyed by his glove, especially if he ends up having to play some OF if there's an injury to Betts/Bradley/Benintendi.

??? He played OF all last year and posted 3.8 WAR. DH'ing regularly probably decreases his overall WAR.

He's the one that decided to stay in Cincinnati...

Actually, he played like half a year.

The Cincinnati Reds will not win a WS during Joey Votto's career

I just read the Reds are playing Nick Senzel at shortstop this spring. Votto, Senzel, Suarez and Gennett with Barnhart and Mesorasco behind the dish is a really good infield.

Really? The obvious question would be why they just wouldn't move Saurez over?

Well, if he's realistic, the Reds aren't doing anything anytime soon

The Reds should be embarrassed about the offseason they've had. With Votto, Suarez, Hamilton, Duvall and Winker in-house, and Senzel kicking down the door, they actually have a lot of good positional players. They also have a developing ace in Castillo. An active offseason with some key additions could have pushed them up to an 80+ win projection, with a lot of room to beat that if their young talent pushes. Instead, they've sat out the offseason without adding a single player of consequence. Why didn't they match the Cozart contract? They're afraid of blocking Peraza and Gennett? We should be hearing about how interested they are in Cobb and Lynn to provide some stability in front of the volatility at the back (Garrett, Bailey, Finnegan, Mahle, Desclafani). That team doesn't have to be bad - with luck and breakouts they could actually be good.

Alex Cora announced Hanley Ramirez will be the teams #3 hitter this year. Solid start to his career as a manager.

So... why isn't Hanley the short side of a 1B platoon with Moreland? He's bad, and his 22M 2019 option vests with 492 PA.

And on cue, FG has a Reds article today. Authored by the same guy who wrote that 'teams should spend irresponsibly because Arron Judge homers are awesome' article. He can be found in the comments arguing that Finnegan and Desclafani are better than Luis Castillo, which I guess he stated in the article before someone (probably Cistulli) edited it out.

The decline of FG this offseason has been fascinating.
