Terminator Old-Timey Member Posted November 7, 2017 Posted November 7, 2017 I could see Pentecost being taken as a 25th man for a s***** NL team. He could be the third C and play some 1B and LF too.

That being said, Pentecost may just have to be a necessary sacrifice unless a trade clears up the logjam of catchers. Edited November 7, 2017 by KingKat

Abomination Old-Timey Member Posted November 7, 2017 Posted November 7, 2017 Yeah no chance Tellez gets taken IMO. IMO there's no chance Tellez doesn't get taken. His problems last year were due to family issues if I remember right. He's basically MLB ready, and someone will want to see what that bat can do.

If he sucks, they can just give him back to the Jays.

If he somehow hits (I completely disagree he's MLB ready) you could keep him. But he's a no-run, no-field player. Even if he's hitting somewhat better than expectations it's hard to keep a guy like that on the bench. You are basically playing with 24 players if you roster him.

That's not a bad strategy but you could say that about every prospective Rule 5 guy but almost none of the teams use their picks on bat only types like this. Maybe a s***** team should try it. I'd rather have Pentecost, personally.

Chances are the F.O. would know if Tellez has interest as they would have likely discussed him in trade multiple times by now (and if they don't plan to add him, they should be pursuing trades with those teams they know are interested). It's great that the Jays have all this talent they want to protect...but they also have to put together a 25 man roster and I count 5 or so bats that might not be Major League ready already on the roster. Considering most teams only carry about 18 or so non pitchers, you just can't stash too many in the minors.
BTS Community Moderator Posted November 8, 2017 Author Posted November 8, 2017 Am I the only one who doesn't give a single s*** about whether or not Tellez gets taken in the Rule V? This guy is going to have to mash in the majors to have any kind of value, and just put up a wRC+ of 72 in a full season at AAA. If someone wants to roster that on their 25-man, be my guest.
glory Old-Timey Member Posted November 8, 2017 Posted November 8, 2017 Yeah, I don't think Tellez will be taken, and even if he is, I doubt he will stick a whole season with another team. A no field, no speed 1B who has to hit in order to have any value coming off the type of season he had in AAA is not going to get a full time gig or a bench gig in the Majors in 2018.

There just is no spot for him on this team. I just wish 2017 Smoak was 2016 Smoak and we could have traded Tellez while he had more value.

Didn't mean to give the impression that I would care if he got taken. I just think he's bad so no one will.

You're not alone. It'll be interesting to see how this plays out.
