I just checked all their stats

Almost every big bat for the Cubs is hitting 200 or less with 0 or 1 HR

Postseason can do funny things to players. Just look at what Judge has done.

Never seen Joe Maddon second guessed so much

Jon Jay hitting leadoff

John Lackey pitches late relief two days in a row while his closer goes unused in close games

I dunno...

He was second guessed a ton in the World Series last year. Mitchel Lichtman basically had a meltdown on Twitter over his bullpen use.

It's been clear for awhile now that Maddon's biggest strength is his ability to manage people. Whatever reputation he still has as some kind of tactical genius is probably not deserved.

I'd take him here in a heartbeat.

Why? Do you really think he's that much better at managing people than Gibby? He's almost definitely tactically worse.

I'd have to agree with you. I don't see how if any advantage Maddon brings over Gibby. Especially when the players here are already happy with Gibby managing them.

I worded that poorly. I wouldn't fire Gibby. I just meant that overall I think Maddon is a very good manager.

Is it fair to say he was a pioneer in bringing defensive shifts into the mainstream and perhaps optimizing lineup construction based on advanced metrics?

Nowadays almost everyone is doing that of course

And yes as an in game manager I don't like him much either

Maddon is a pioneer at listening to his analytics people and taking what they say seriously, applying it on the field and selling the concepts (broadly) to his players. His open mind and good people skills have served him well. That being said, Maddon isn't necessarily the guy with the best intuitive grasp of analytics and he has a reputation for overthinking things and talking himself into sub-optimal strategies. From what I have been told, Kevin Cash is much more in synch with the TB front office and the analytics team than Maddon ever was. Of course the fact that Maddon was even listening to analytics people at all made him really standout at the time.

Justin Turner is not human. Jesus.

He forgot to do the double fist pump on the 29th anniversary of the Gibson walk-off. Thus, he is human. He missed a big opportunity there!

Jon Maddon pulled a Showalter, maybe not a full Showalter but a Showalter-lite (Showalter's was a one game playoff and Lackey>>>>>Ubaldo)

2017 John Lackey - FIP 5.30, xFIP 4.62

2016 Ubaldo Jimenez - FIP 4.43 xFIP 4.64

Maddon went full Showalter. Never go full Showalter.

Morrow is a free agent next year, we should sign him.

The FA list this winter is pretty thin in general, but relievers seem to be the exception. There's some very good targets.
