BTS Community Moderator Posted November 18, 2017 Posted November 18, 2017 I agree, but if we got him..... 2018s outlook gets a lot better imo Yes. Adding what might be 5 wins for dirt cheap to the 2018 team makes things look much, much better. They'd still have most of their offseason budget for other additions.

They'd still have most of their offseason budget for other additions. That would actually make keeping Donaldson for a year more reasonable, depending on where it puts the Jays in win projection (plus whatever else they add in addition to Ohtani). If the team and ownership's goal is to avoid rebuilding, and lose free agents without missing a beat, then this is the type of move they'll have to find a way to pull off.

saskjayfan Old-Timey Member Posted November 18, 2017 Posted November 18, 2017 That's fine and all, but who says all things are equal? they aren't equal, we're behind. I'm shocked people think we are in the lead.
Bobthe4th Old-Timey Member Posted November 18, 2017 Posted November 18, 2017 they aren't equal, we're behind. I'm shocked people think we are in the lead. Who has said we are favourites? The most anyone has said here is that we are one of 20+ contenders, which is true.
Abomination Old-Timey Member Posted November 18, 2017 Posted November 18, 2017 they aren't equal, we're behind. I'm shocked people think we are in the lead. Do you have proof we're behind? The bottom line is, I don't think anyone in the public has any clue where any teams stand. We could be the preferred destination for Ohtani, or we could be dead last. If I had to guess, I'd think we'd probably be in the upper third somewhere. We have the payroll to support a winner (and a nice future salary for him). We have a culture pretty supportive of people from other countries, and a decently sized Japanese community. We have a forward thinking front office investing in things like the high performance department, and soon new spring training facilities. We have the capability of letting him DH. On the negative side, he probably grew up watching west coast teams and likely dreamed of playing for one of them. The time difference would also be better for him on the west coast, which could help with sponsorship deals in Japan. Our stadium would also almost certainly be a negative.

Yeah this is a sensible assessment. We definitely have some plus points in our favour, but it'll take an amazing sales pitch to convince him to come here. Not impossible, but relatively long odds compared to a few others.

It's hard to know exactly what his priorities are. He may favor a team like Oakland that could give him significantly more rope on the hitting end of things, which would give him a chance to really earn big later (plus it would help his pitching numbers heading to FA). As a guess, I would think SF, LA, SEA, and NY are probably ahead of us. We're likely in the next tier of 5 or so teams.

But as you say it's hard to predict. Realistically the only teams not in contention are budget restricted teams that are in the early stages of rebuilding, like the Marlins.

I don't think either Texas team is too likely, as they're fairly clogged up right now in terms of bats.

Oakland would likely appeal to him as a pitcher, but if he wants to actually be thought of as a two way player, that stadium would be the complete death of him as a batter.

Spanky99 Old-Timey Member Posted November 21, 2017 Posted November 21, 2017 Deadline extended to tomorrow at 8 PM Est, seems like they'll get this done. MLBPA Extends MLB-NPB Posting Negotiation Deadline By Jeff Todd | November 20, 2017 at 6:04pm CDT Negotiations regarding a new posting agreement between Major League Baseball and Japan’s Nippon Professional Baseball have been postponed, according to an announcement from the MLB Player’s Association. While the MLB and NPB seem largely on the same page, the union has the right to authorize any agreement and has engaged on the subject. It’s a one-day extension at this time, per the MLBPA announcement. Last we heard, the union had set a deadline of 8pm EST today to get something done. With issues still remaining, though, the sides have evidently decided to keep talking for at least another day. Jeff Passan of Yahoo Sports (Twitter links) reported earlier that there was optimism on a deal, but that some “gaps” still remained. The news is critical, of course, for the MLB move sought by Japanese superstar Shohei Ohtani. For now, he remains in flux, with virtually every major-league organizations watching closely to see if and when he’ll formally be made available. There appear to be a few areas which the sides need to sort out before we’ll learn Ohtani’s fate. Passan cites some bargaining over the timeline of a MLBPA-proposed window during which NPB teams can make players available for transfer, though that seems to be something where some give-and-take can result in agreement. Jim Allen of Kyodo News, meanwhile, hears of a more fundamental dispute over the question whether posted players can be pulled back if their ultimate contract does not result in a sufficient fee to their NPB club. (Twitter link.) Because the new proposed system would allow the Japanese team to receive a percentage-based fee, rather than the fixed sum that previously was utilized, the question of revocability of posting is of added importance. https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2017/11/mlb-npb-extend-posting-negotiation-deadline-shohei-ohtani-rumors.html

If any team honestly believes it's not in the O(h)tani hunt they should be trading International pool money I believe that would put the Yankees as the team that can offer the most money?
Spanky99 Old-Timey Member Posted November 21, 2017 Posted November 21, 2017 I believe that would put the Yankees as the team that can offer the most money? They received 250,000... just short of the Rangers. Rangers $3,535,000 Yankees $3.5 million Twins $3,245,000 Pittsburgh ($2,266,750), Miami ($1.74 million) Seattle ($1,570,500). Philadelphia ($900,000), Milwaukee ($765,000), Arizona ($731,250), Baltimore ($660,000), Boston ($462,000) Tampa Bay ($440,500). Twelve teams are capped at $300,000 Atlanta, the Chicago Cubs and White Sox, Cincinnati, Houston, Kansas City, the Los Angeles Dodgers, Oakland, St. Louis, San Diego, San Francisco and Washington. Detroit ($159,500), Angels ($150,000), New York Mets ($105,000) Toronto ($50,000), Cleveland and Colorado ($10,000 apiece).
TheHurl Site Manager Posted November 21, 2017 Posted November 21, 2017 I believe that would put the Yankees as the team that can offer the most money? Assuming they got at least $310K from the Marlins it would. If my math is right the Yankees can trade for $3.625M in bonus pool money in total.

Not just about Ohtani...

They shouldn't fall under International money anymore. I think they are Open market...or if I were a lawyer I'd be making sure they are.

metafour Verified Member Posted November 21, 2017 Posted November 21, 2017 How much cap have the Yankees already acquired? Seems strange seeing them right there with the Rangers in available cap space when the Rangers really weren't players in the IFA class this year (they signed BA's #24 prospect with the rest being unranked), whereas the Yankees did drop a several mill (probably at least $4 million from estimation).

Sorry you are correct. They got $1.5M in the Sonny Gray deal, and two undisclosed (at the time I assume) deals with Baltimore for Wotherspoon and Ramirez.

If you make them true FA that just incentives other players to try to find ways to say they were improperly signed in the future so they can make more $.
Spanky99 Old-Timey Member Posted November 21, 2017 Posted November 21, 2017 Oh welly well well... we're an 1 hour and 45 minutes away from the deadline. We just might not see Otani this year... Tick, Tock...
