Abomination Old-Timey Member Posted July 31, 2017 Posted July 31, 2017 Aoki is actually arbitration eligible I think. Interesting. I wonder if we're eating the Liriano money AND taking Aoki to improve the return? Aoki + Hernandez would be fantastic.
Stangstag Old-Timey Member Posted July 31, 2017 Posted July 31, 2017 Aoki... Why? He's only got 1 year on the contract and he's poo anyways
Brownie19 Old-Timey Member Posted July 31, 2017 Posted July 31, 2017 Source: Astros are sending OF Nori Aoki and a Minor League player to the Blue Jays. http://i.imgur.com/gkypeh7.gif WTF.
burlingtonbandit Old-Timey Member Posted July 31, 2017 Posted July 31, 2017 Holy s*** Aoki is old. 35 Years and I thought he was like 32.
G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted July 31, 2017 Posted July 31, 2017 Why did we want a 35 year old OF Or was that a reverse salary dump
glory Old-Timey Member Posted July 31, 2017 Posted July 31, 2017 Aoki is arb eligible in 2018, but I don't even know if that's a positive. He's been pretty bad this year and is 35. Any word on the minor leaguer?

Brownie19 Old-Timey Member Posted July 31, 2017 Posted July 31, 2017 Why did we want a 35 year old OF Or was that a reverse salary dump I guess it could be....better wait until we see who the minor leaguer is before we collectively lose our s***.
fatcowxlive Old-Timey Member Posted July 31, 2017 Posted July 31, 2017 ... Aoki? That minor leaguer better be the main piece
jaysblue Old-Timey Member Posted July 31, 2017 Posted July 31, 2017 Aoki... Why? He's only got 1 year on the contract and he's poo anyways Funny. I recall last year or two years ago people wanted the Jays to sign Nori Aoki as a possible platoon bat in LF.
burlingtonbandit Old-Timey Member Posted July 31, 2017 Posted July 31, 2017 lol like the jays were going to get anything of substance for Liriano anyway..

Brownie19 Old-Timey Member Posted July 31, 2017 Posted July 31, 2017 Funny. I recall last year or two years ago people wanted the Jays to sign Nori Aoki as a possible platoon bat in LF. There was a point when he was valuable. That point was not the 2018 season.
G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted July 31, 2017 Posted July 31, 2017 Funny. I recall last year or two years ago people wanted the Jays to sign Nori Aoki as a possible platoon bat in LF. Yes.. This is true A lot of people did But he's replacement level now it looks like at 35 and is making 5.5M
THANOS Old-Timey Member Posted July 31, 2017 Posted July 31, 2017 Why did we want a 35 year old OF Or was that a reverse salary dump Reverse salary dump to get a decent prospect. Maybe a High A outside of the top 100, but with a bit of upside?
glory Old-Timey Member Posted July 31, 2017 Posted July 31, 2017 Yeah, Aoki was a dump by the Astros. Just have to hope the minor leaguer is some sort of compensation for the Jays taking Aoki and giving up the better (of the two s*****) players.
Bobthe4th Old-Timey Member Posted July 31, 2017 Posted July 31, 2017 Aoki is arb eligible in 2018, but I don't even know if that's a positive. He's been pretty bad this year and is 35. Any word on the minor leaguer? Aoki's contract is $5.5m this year, no way we offer him arbitration next year. This must be we're using our wealth to give them Liriano for free and paying Aoki's contract, to upgrade the prospect from nothing to (hopefully) something.
burlingtonbandit Old-Timey Member Posted July 31, 2017 Posted July 31, 2017 Reverse salary dump to get a decent prospect. Maybe a High A outside of the top 100, but with a bit of upside? Probably a nothing player. Jays save $ by trading Liriano and taking back Aoki.
jays4life19 Old-Timey Member Posted July 31, 2017 Posted July 31, 2017 It's going to be Gilberto Celestino. I can just feel it.

Also clears a spot on their 40 to add Liriano.
burlingtonbandit Old-Timey Member Posted July 31, 2017 Posted July 31, 2017 I haven't seen it anywhere that the Jays are picking up salary, so is this just a salary dump?
jaysblue Old-Timey Member Posted July 31, 2017 Posted July 31, 2017 Knowing how Shapiro and Atkins work, they like to have potential roster holes filled in advance in case they strike out in the offseason. For e.g. re-signing Justin Smoak last August. With LF being a major hole on this team and with Bautista leaving, they figured Aoki at least covers a corner OF spot at a decent price in case they can't make a bigger upgrade earlier in the offseason.
Abomination Old-Timey Member Posted July 31, 2017 Posted July 31, 2017 Actually none of those outfielders we named as possible targets are available. My great plan is ruined. But Aoki is! Your plan can live on!

He's going to be a FA anyway though. No one is going to pay him $6 Million next year unless he has a monster 2nd half.
Abomination Old-Timey Member Posted July 31, 2017 Posted July 31, 2017 I wonder if this is partly cover in case they decided to trade Pearce? He might have some actual value for a contender.
Maine Jays Verified Member Posted July 31, 2017 Posted July 31, 2017 The Red Sox would probably love to pair him with Moreland
Bobthe4th Old-Timey Member Posted July 31, 2017 Posted July 31, 2017 I wonder if this is partly cover in case they decided to trade Pearce? He might have some actual value for a contender. Doubt it factors in really, would make more sense if we were an OF down to give Alford a 2 month audition for an OF place on next year's roster.
jays4life19 Old-Timey Member Posted July 31, 2017 Posted July 31, 2017 But Aoki is! Your plan can live on! I already picked him up and sent a trade offer to Jaysblue for him.
