jays4life19 Old-Timey Member Posted July 3, 2017 Posted July 3, 2017 Niceeee. Finally have ourselves a competent backup!
fatcowxlive Old-Timey Member Posted July 3, 2017 Posted July 3, 2017 So a veteran catcher who was 2 years removed from a 2 WAR season, yells at his pitching staff, then we get him on a free essentially. I'll take it lol How much salary are we taking on though? He's owed $14M this season, I hope we're getting significant $
Jonn Old-Timey Member Posted July 3, 2017 Posted July 3, 2017 I like this move. Unfortunately it's too little too late. But not having a black hole at Catcher allows them too rest Martin comfortably and give him more rest and hopefully that helps him be more effective.
Governator Community Moderator Posted July 3, 2017 Posted July 3, 2017 Too bad he can't throw anyone out anymore but quite a viable backup option.

West Texas Forever Old-Timey Member Posted July 3, 2017 Posted July 3, 2017 When was the last time the Jays had a legit backup catcher? Navarro Zaun Thigpen Barajas Chávez Buck Molina (not the good one) Mathis Thole Maile What a glorious 10 year span of backups.

As much as I dislike him as a broadcaster, Zaun was a pretty good catcher for us.

Jonn Old-Timey Member Posted July 3, 2017 Posted July 3, 2017 Outside Stroman the Jays pitchers are pretty bad too. Yea I was about to say the Blue Jays have to be ranked among the worst lol.
justafan Verified Member Posted July 3, 2017 Posted July 3, 2017 Way too much money tied up in catchers. John_Havok Old-Timey Member Posted July 3, 2017 Posted July 3, 2017 Way too much money tied up in catchers. Jays won't be paying his full remaining salary this season, if at all, and he's a free agent after this season. Combine this with the Grilli trade and the Jays are probably no higher in payroll than they were before.
fatcowxlive Old-Timey Member Posted July 3, 2017 Posted July 3, 2017 Way too much money tied up in catchers. I just read he was actually recently DFA'd by the cubbies so I doubt we're left with anything more than the league minimum, he was gone already and we gave them something

We're probably paying half of his remaining contract this year, or something like that. That probably lays to rest any speculation about whether we're looking to sell right now or not, although ultimately I guess he'd be easy to move at the deadline regardless.

From MLBTR: "Unsurprisingly, FOX’s Ken Rosenthal tweets that the Cubs will pay the “vast majority” of the sum that remains on that deal as a means of facilitating the deal." It doesn't sound like we're paying much at all.
o2cui2i Community Moderator Posted July 3, 2017 Posted July 3, 2017 Maile has been great defensively, but worse than Thole with the stick and that's fugly
justafan Verified Member Posted July 3, 2017 Posted July 3, 2017 This sets up well to trade Donaldson. Martin will play more 3b. The Jays have been hitting poorly since the end of last August. Brook has to go as well.
Omar Old-Timey Member Posted July 3, 2017 Posted July 3, 2017 Hard to believe but this team just got slower. http://michigantaxes.com/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2011/02/dike.jpg
Captain Adama Old-Timey Member Posted July 3, 2017 Posted July 3, 2017 I made the mistake of seeing the comments section of the Facebook Jays group on this, and it almost makes me wish that Toronto didn't have a baseball team. I've never seen such a large group of mindless f***tards. Holy f***ing s***, they were the load that their mothers should've swallowed.

"They need to replace the batting coach with someone who will teach the players the fundamentals of hitting. Swinging at air trying to get lucky and hit home runs only is definitely not working. Sorry Damarlo" So many gems, so little time.
Effit Old-Timey Member Posted July 3, 2017 Posted July 3, 2017 Also a guy on there crying for the Jays to get a new "head coach".
Terminator Old-Timey Member Posted July 3, 2017 Posted July 3, 2017 This is a massive upgrade. Salty and Maile have been worth about -1.5 WAR and Montero has been worth .3 WAR in similar amounts of PT. Extrapolate that over a full season and we just upgraded the roster by 3.6 WAR. That's a pretty dirty way to crunch the numbers and it's probably too late but this is a big move given the s***** backups we've been trotting out there.
Captain Adama Old-Timey Member Posted July 3, 2017 Posted July 3, 2017 -Think about it. Cleveland starts winning when Atkins & Shapiro leave. The Blue Jays who were an exciting & winning team hit the skids. Coincidence? -Exactly, look at the Dodgers right now too, they've got anthropolis now -the Indian's biggest acquisitions to build the best bullpen in the league came after Shapiro left. A lot of teams in this league are 3 star players away from contention, Shapiro didn't and should not be getting credit for making those moves^^ -Aaron Morin shapiro took over a top contender and did what? he added what to our pen? he let Edwin walk..LF is a mess..our depth is terrible.blame AA too,he deserves it for the brutal marlins and mets deals but shapiro has done nothing to keep the team trending up..today were riddled with untradeable brutal contracts..lets hope martin and tulo are the next rios's ..Donaldson needs a deal and if Edwin walked, bautista is a shell of himself, martin and tulo are a mess so do we hand Donaldson 100 million? it will get very very ugly umm uglier soon -the way they handled alex...this is what they wanted bum-boys like atkins and that loser shapiro -No coincidence that the Jays are losing under the leadership of dumb and dumber. All of these goddamn idiots can f*** right off.
Effit Old-Timey Member Posted July 3, 2017 Posted July 3, 2017 "Management needs to go. What a disgrace. Those two are a disease."
Captain Adama Old-Timey Member Posted July 3, 2017 Posted July 3, 2017 Shapiro got his executive of year cause he got lucky in draft and got great trade package for bartolo colon and again got lucky again as they panned out to be multiple time all-stars. Since then what he's he really done? Wasn't excited when he came here. My IQ keeps dropping.
