It's a dumb play, but you aren't guaranteed to score from 2nd on a single with a relatively slow baserunner. But then that slow baserunner has no business trying to steal 3rd with the team's hottest hitter at the plate.

There are about 7 teams in the same position as us. If you dont sell and dont make the playoffs you stuck between a rock and a hard place

 

The Jays should not be giving up assets for rental signings when we haven't even reached .500 all season yet. But that doesn't mean we have to sell.

 

A lot can happen in a month, hopefully we're 3-5 games over .500 by then. If we are still in contention for a wildcard then trade one of Liriano or Estrada and keep the other for the run in.

To be fair the decision to sell or not has to be made in a couple of weeks and we can't even get to .500...if that remains we have to sell and get pieces back for next season and beyond

“It could be as simple as he goes to the bullpen, but we have to think about the fact that he is starting depth, not only for this year, but for the years to come and what’s best for his career, which ultimately translates into what’s best for this organization,” said Atkins. “I hope we have that problem, that we have six healthy starters pitching well.”

A hard hit ball (high likelihood with Smoak) right to the outfielder and with a slow baserunner could lead to an out at the plate on a good throw. I am not defending the stupid decision to steal, just saying it's not a guarantee to score from 2nd on a single. Obviously, that's why having more speed on the basepaths is such an advantage.
