To get guys like that signed your have to save significant money somewhere, which we have not done. None of the first 5 picks are underslot selections. I told you guys last night that there were no obvious punt picks to finish yesterday either.

They more or less played the first ten rounds straight up. They may have saved a bit of money, but we have no idea if that is going to pay Danner or even Peterson slightly over slot. Again, you keep thinking like we have the money to pay some kid 10x over slot when I've told you a million times that we have not saved significant money anywhere.

I think what he means is with we had extra bonus pool money because of the additional first. Both first round selections weren't considered tough signs and will sign around slot. He was hoping they went with a tough sign guy trying to talk him out of college by overpaying.

I guess the FO feels its more important to get the guy you want rather than a boom/bust guy just because you can

That's kind of the point. They haven't taken a single Top 200 guy since the 4th round. The Jays are well known to shock people by being creative enough to sign guys who are considered unsignable. Between guys like Alford, Pruitt, Brentz, Tellez, they were able to pull off moves like this seemingly each year. This year they have one of their biggest bonus pools ever (if not the biggest) and they've just spent the last two days grabbing off-board guys. Sure they might know something about these kids that nobody else knows, but it's hard to imagine that they have a full draft board of good prospects that apparently nobody else has ever heard of.

It'd be easier to be understanding if this front office had drafted for the Jays before, but they have a brand new scouting director. It's more concerning when a guy has a weird or suspect draft in his first attempt at it with the team.

A draft being weird or suspect is a subjective take. Looking at most teams drafts very few teams took top 200 players past the 4th or 5th round. The Yankees only took less players in the top 200 than the Jays did. Cubs, Red Sox and Indians only took 1 more. You seemed to really want guys like Burns, Beck and Cabrera in the 3rd and 4th rounds, and these are guys that are still available in the 25th round. You can get as creative as you want, if they arent gonna sign they wont sign. This isnt the old regime, they aren't going to operate the same way

Yeah, not overly thrilled with Shapiro/Atkins 1st real draft under their handpicked team. Warmoth and Pearson are nice, but 2nd and 3rd day drafts have left plenty to be desired.

based on what?

how much do you know about guys ranked 200-500? You can only do some much with the money you have for signing

I honestly know nothing except getting an idea reading the scouting reports. But it seems like they took a lot of lower ceiling college players for around slot value. I'd be more intrigued if they took a few more HS guys with more upside and then you can use the massive player development support system you created to help these players reach closer to their potential.

You tell us a lot of things. You told us that there was no chance the Jays would sign Pruitt. You also told us that when we did sign Pruitt, it was almost certainly because Maese was injured, even though that assumption made no sense and was entirely irrelevant to Pruitt even if it was true.

None of us think they should just go out and waste picks on guys they'll never sign. We'd be excited if they did pick somebody good with their late picks because it would mean that they did get something done to make a signing possible. None of us know anything about their finances for the draft and it's obnoxious for anyone to pretend that they do.

Fair enough, but if you want high ceiling guys, why no mention or praise of the Riley Adams pick?

From FanGraphs Q&A:

MaineBall: Who has the highest ceiling of the remaining players?

Eric A Longenhagen: If either Riley Adams or KJ Harrison can catch and tap into their power, they're beasts. Both have huge question marks about those particular skills, which is why they're still on the board.

Eric A Longenhagen: Toronto selects Riley Adams, C, San Diego. Huge kid, plus raw power, above average pure arm strength that plays down due to how slow he exits crouch. Swing and miss issues because of lever length. #56 on my board, ceiling is huge if he hits and catches.

Cordell Dunn sounds interesting if they can sign him.

From PG:

Latest Showcase Report

2016 National Showcase Jun 15, 2016

PG Grade: 9.5

Cordell Dunn is a 2017 C/3B with a 6-0 190 lb. frame from Olive Branch, MS who attends Center Hill HS. Solid athletic build with good present strength. Has good athleticism behind the plate, shifts well with quick feet, strong hands receiving the ball, quick release on his throws, 1.93 best pop time, can use his lower half better throwing. Right handed hitter, upper body swing from a simple leg lift load, pretty still start with his hands, has strength in his swing and can impact the ball hard, swing is slightly uphill, just like his throwing he doesn't use his strong lower half enough to generate power and balance. Has the athleticism to keep improving with adjustments. Good student, verbal commitment to Texas Tech.

I liked the pick. Rounds 1-3 I really liked. After that not so much.. Kevin Smith not a fan of. I guess it matters how much they sign these guys for too because if they could get Ritcheson with the $ saved from rounds 5-10 then obviously that matters but not many of those guys seem like under 10K bonuses.

With their 23rd round pick, the Blue Jays selected prep RHP Daniel Ritcheson (Rank 131 on MLB, 187 on BA)

yeah, and this is a perfect example of why I feel its way too early to call a draft disappointing or underwhelming especially without it being over. Of course everyone is entitled to their own opinion but I think they've got a plan in place and we wont know for years how well it worked. (not singling you out by any means)

25th round selection, CF Cooper Davis from Mississauga (Rank 368 on BA)

MLB.com scouting video

A Canadianmmm

Scouting Report:

As an underclassman, Davis earned recognition early and often as one of the top prospects in Canada. He's developed into a solid prospect, with the ability to put the ball in play consistently and let his plus speed play. Davis has a simple swing with a flat bat path that's geared for contact and line drives. He has well below-average power but can shoot doubles to the gaps, and his above-average speed plays well on the bases. He shows promise defensively but faces profile questions as he's not a lock to play center field at the highest level and doesn't show the kind of power usually found in a corner outfielder. He's committed to Vanderbilt, and he could be a productive college player for the Commodores and further prove himself in the Southeastern Conference.

I think you've just broken Hurl's speech rules. Expect this post to be altered in some heinous way.

Good to have you frequently posting here again, btw. Excellent job with the draft, thank you for all your work. I only wish that I were a productive member of this board.

I sexually identify as an Attack Helicopter. Ever since I was a boy I dreamed of soaring over the oilfields dropping hot sticky loads on disgusting foreigners. People say to me that a person being a helicopter is impossible and I’m retarded but I don’t care, I’m beautiful. I’m having a plastic surgeon install rotary blades, 30 mm cannons and AMG-114 Hellfire missiles on my body. From now on I want you guys to call me “Apache” and respect my right to kill from above and kill needlessly. If you can’t accept me you’re a heliphobe and need to check your vehicle privilege. Thank you for being so understanding.

28th round pick, prep 3B Davis Schneider (Rank 463 on BA)

Scouting Report:

Schneider raised eyebrows with an impressive showing at the 2016 WWBA World Championships, where he did damage with his righthanded bat. His pure hitting ability is by far his strongest tool; he shows the ability to hit line drives to the gaps and covers the strike zone well. Schneider's body type doesn't fit the prototype for a third baseman at 5-foot-10 and 190 pounds. Schneider will have some draft interest from pro teams, but he is committed to Rutgers and could boost his draft stock by proving himself offensively at the collegiate level.

Not like they will sign him. Yankees magic isn't that good.

lol, since the 24th round, the Yankees have drafted:

Pat DeMarco (181)

Riley Thompson (164)

Tristan Beck (53)

Jake Mangum (102)

Steven Williams (146)

Tanner Burns (39)

Between Beck and Burns, they've picked up two of the best talents in the draft. Either the Yankees don't care about throwing away picks on guys they'll never sign, or every other team is dumn.

Unfortunately, there's a certain allure about playing for the Yankees that virtually no other teams have. Maybe CHC and Boston, but that's it. Most definitely a factor for some kids.
