Minor league deal... That would indicate that they haven't ruled out Jimenez.

I don't care as much about framing as I do his bat. As long as he's not a butcher behind the plate. Is he an improvement over Thole with the bat? Can you actually pinch hit with him in a pinch?

If his framing is ok this isn't terrible.

Terrible according to BP. Sandwiched between Juan Centeno, Wellington Castillo, Carlos Ruiz, Kurt Suzuki and Robinson Chirinos last year. Same thing in 2015.

Isn't Salty a horrid framer? I mean, over the 40-50 games he's projected to play barring injury to Martin it probably won't mean much, but whatever.

The fact that we are signing him to a backup role means to me that he is going to have to earn his way on to the team in spring. My guess is he will be competing with A.J for the backup spot. Really not in for much if we decide to go with Jimenez.

I'm under the impression that his framing is garbage, like among the worst in the league. Is this not the reality?

Yeah it seems like he sucks.

I know you hate Jeff Mathis but Mathis at 2 million per is better than Salty at 1.5. Only plus of Salty is that they might have an agreement in place where they cut him if he doesn't make the 25. I'm kind of hoping that this is the case and that Salty i only there to be a plan B if Jimenez doesn't look the part. I've been bearish on Jimenez but now I'm rooting for the positive reports on his catching to be vindicated.

On the bright side, it makes me more comfortable to hear that it's a minor league signing. Hey maybe they can get Russ to teach him how to be a better framer, it's unlikely but it has happened before.

He can actually hit RHP pretty well.

Against RHP:

10.1 BB%

103 wRC+

Fangraphs shows his hard hit balls % being above his career average the last few years but his BABIP took a big hit.

Perhaps unlucky. Perhaps a prime candidate for a bounce back?

Minor league signing is no risk. Salty's put up pretty good numbers against RHP in his career too. If he's not a total butcher defensively it seems good to look at him for the backup C role.

But he can't frame.
