Marco Estrada is a free agent after this season, and one could argue he's been our most consistent pitcher these past few years. He's already been worth more than his contract just one season in.

Statline with the Blue Jays so far: 22-17, 3.30 ERA, 357.0IP, 127 ERA+, 1.081 WHIP, 4.28 WHIP

He's been worth 7.0 WAR in his tenure with the Jays so far.

Positives:

- Doesn't rely on velocity to pitch, so he might age better comparative to other pitchers

- Unbelievably clutch in the postseason. 2.64 ERA in 47 innings pitched

Negatives:

- Back issues and is injury prone (pitched with a herniated disc all of the second half apparently)

- Will be 34 in July

So do we try to get him back after this season? Would you want him back even if he has another good season given his age? Discuss.

Assuming his back isn't being held together with duct tape by season's end, another two year deal wouldn't be the worst thing on earth. He doesn't have a ton of innings on his arm.

I could have sworn I had a post in here that was deleted?

What is there really to discuss about him this early right now? His performance should hold it's just a matter of health. Obviously if has a great year and his back isn't a chronic issue we should try to retain him, especially since there's no more FA compensation and how expensive good starters are

Think he gets a qualifying off next offseason? I'd probably offer him one if he has another year like he did last.

He likely accepts the 17-18M QO.

Can he be qualified a 2nd time? I thought once you were qualified once that was it for your career?

Wasn't the q.o. outright eliminated in the new CBA?

No FA draft pick compensation starting next offseason per the new CBA

The rich get richer and the poor get poorer

Not really. It was much more effective as a market suppresion measure than a competitive balance measure. All it really did was artificially deflate the market for some FAs. There was every reason for the players to push to scrap it and it's surprising that it took this long.

Yes there is... If there wasn't what would be the point of even having a QO system?

Draft Pick Compensation: The changes are numerous and complex but address everything from the Qualifying Offer system to those that break the Luxury Tax.

- Clubs may not tender a Qualifying Offer to a player who has previously received a Qualifying Offer.

- The time period during which a player can accept a Qualifying Offer will be extended from 7 to 10 days.

- Clubs signing a Free Agent subject to compensation will no longer forfeit a first round selection, but will be subject to the following:

- A non-market disqualified Revenue Sharing Payee Club shall forfeit its third highest remaining selection in the next Rule 4 Draft.

- A Luxury Tax offender shall forfeit its second-highest and fifth-highest remaining selections in the next Rule 4 Draft and shall have its International Signing Bonus Pool (described below) reduced by $1,000,000 in the next full Signing Period.

- All other Clubs shall forfeit their second-highest remaining selection in the next Rule 4 Draft and shall have their International Signing Bonus Pool reduced by $500,000 in the next full Signing Bonus Period.

- All forfeited International Signing Bonus Pool monies will be distributed equally among all other Clubs. Competitive Balance Selections will be exempt from forfeiture.

- A Former Club of a Free Agent subject to draft pick compensation will receive the following:

- A non-market disqualified Revenue Sharing Payee Club shall receive a selection immediately following the first round of the draft if the player signs a contract with a total guarantee of $50 million or more.

- Clubs that break the Luxury Tax threshold shall receive a draft selection immediately following the fourth round of the next Rule 4 Draft.

- All other former clubs shall receive a selection immediately following the Competitive Balance Round B of the next Rule 4 Draft (which follows the second round).

No, just some complex rule changes. Depends all on market, payroll, and how much the player signs for.

O.K. I guess they ended up compromising on that. Early talk was that they would drop it altogether. Knowing that you can get out of the q.o. system altogether after accepting is probably going to incite more players to accept the q.o. and re-enter the market unencumbered after only one year.
