Spanky99 Old-Timey Member Posted February 27, 2017 Posted February 27, 2017 I have a friend who was at the complex today and has been going to Spring training for years. He was really impressed with Alford and Ramirez. I know it's early but it would be nice to get a couple of breakout prospects this year....can't wait to get down there. Fortunately, he will be sending me daily updates. Were you down there for the game yesterday? I'm just asking cause there was a gent sitting behind home plate that looks similar to you from your pics with some of the players.

No. Unfortunately, I won't be there until late March and will stay until the first week in May. Will watch a lot of A ball and extended spring at the Mattick. I will also see the Jays for their 2 series at the Trop...first and last weeks of April. I buy the cheapest tickets ( under $20) and sit anywhere. Can't wait to get down there...will send reports.

Brownie19 Old-Timey Member Posted March 2, 2017 Posted March 2, 2017 (edited) Took my 3 sons to the TB v. PHI game today. Sadly the stadium was empty; however, that allowed us to turn our berm seats into prime seats in the shade (as it was 28 today without a cloud in site). The stadium staff were great - showing my oldest boy (6) were to go for autographs. Poor kid stood there patiently as almost every Philly player walked past him (including JP Crawford - who's autograph I really wanted). Luckily Tommy Joseph came over and gave all 3 of my boys game balls. He was very nice, talked to the boys and made their day. Our 1 year old fell asleep on the car on the 20 minute ride to the game and thus his nap was cut short by our arrival. This put him into a groggy, zombie-like state so the wife suggested I take him up into the stands while the other 2 rug rats burned off some energy. With a nice breeze blowing through the stadium as the game started, I had a bit of a zen like moment - holding my 3rd (and last) born son as I watch my first pitch of the season. Nearly brought a tear to my eye. The snap of the mitt was loud today - music to my ears. I will do everything I can to help pass down the love of the game as days like today are simply the best. Jays v. Twins this Saturday. Can't wait. Edited March 3, 2017 by Brownie19
SaskJaysFan_2 Verified Member Posted March 2, 2017 Posted March 2, 2017 I am a big Pompey fan. Let me toss that out there. He's 24, right? If he has a great ST, I feel there is no way he can't be given LF, *at least* against righties. In this scenario, is Upton DFAed? Dunno. So, in your opinion, if Pompey has a great Spring, what happens? I don't want him to languish another year in the minors. But also, I don't want Lunch Bucket Hero, redux. Man, if he has a good year in LF, with his tools, he's a great addition. I don't see Carrera getting over like 0.7 WAR.

If you're using Pompey against righties then he's platooning with Upton, not replacing him. Pompey would be bumping Carerra in that scenario.
intentional wok Old-Timey Member Posted March 2, 2017 Posted March 2, 2017 For some reason I just can't see the team cutting Ezequiel loose. He'll probably get scooped up pretty quickly. I think Pompey goes to AAA even if he rakes ST. He'll need to kick the door down during the season or wait for an injury.

If you get a chance head over to the Mattick centre off Salon and CR1 around 11 to catch most of the prospects and some of the big leaguers. Enjoy the game on Saturday.

I'm down in Port Charlotte Spats (home of the Rays/Stone Crabs); however, it is an amazing stadium. My favourite in the area. I was just telling my wife yesterday how I should take the oldest out and try to catch some of the practices!

HERPDERP Old-Timey Member Posted March 2, 2017 Posted March 2, 2017 so does that mean we pretty much lose him since he won't pitch for us out of ST?
Spanky99 Old-Timey Member Posted March 2, 2017 Posted March 2, 2017 so does that mean we pretty much lose him since he won't pitch for us out of ST? No... he'll go on the DL. He won't be pitching a minimum of 2 weeks. So the DL to start the year for sure.

He'll be DL's and then they'll stretch his rehab as much as is allowed to get some kind of look at him and then he'll probably gets waived unless there's an immediate need.

BJBirdy Verified Member Posted March 2, 2017 Posted March 2, 2017 Honestly, I think Dalton Pompey is overrated. Now, that doesn't mean I don't think he has MLB potential, but I'm just saying that I'd rather he not start the 2017 season with the Blue Jays, even as a 4th outfielder. Have him start the year in Buffalo and if he comes out kicking ass for the first 4-5 weeks of the season, then give him a shot. He had a decent season in Buffalo on paper last year, but he had a rather poor second half of the season with the Bisons.

I think people have forgotten he has existed for the most part.
Bobthe4th Old-Timey Member Posted March 2, 2017 Posted March 2, 2017 Overrated lol? I think people have forgotten he has existed for the most part. TBF he probably means on this board. A lot of people seem to think Pompey's worst case would still be quite good. We've already seen his worst case though, when he was given a starting role in 2015 and he was so bad that he ended up being demoted all the way to AA.

I don't see anyone predicting big things from him, folks hope he seizes the LF job because our other options are terrible.

I don't see anyone predicting big things from him, folks hope he seizes the LF job because our other options are terrible. I still see a lot of people overrating his floor. "Can't be worse than" random mediocre major leaguer type comparisons. He's not guaranteed to be a Major League caliber player. He's basically been spinning his wheels for two seasons now after that 2014 breakout. Don't get me wrong. I would love for him to establish himself but nothing in his recent history really suggests he will and I don't really understand why anyone would have that expectation at the moment.

It's more of a hope, for the breakout. That's fair. The shine has certainly eluded him.
Brownie19 Old-Timey Member Posted March 3, 2017 Posted March 3, 2017 I think the board is simply rooting for a homegrown talent to bust through, recognize his potential and recuse this team from an Upton/Zeke platoon in LF.

"Can't be worse than" is a terrible way to look at things. It can always get worse. Being worse is way easier than being better. If Pompey can't even beat Zeke then leave him in the minors.
