Abomination Old-Timey Member Posted February 3, 2017 Posted February 3, 2017 Based on their current salary numbers, the D'Backs stand to pay 46.7% of their payroll to Zack Greinke. He'll make $34M in 2017, and the team only has $72.8M in total commitments. If that isn't some modern day record it has to be up there. Didn't Clemens account for a massive chunk of the Astros salary one year?
burlingtonbandit Old-Timey Member Posted February 3, 2017 Posted February 3, 2017 Weren't you just saying yesterday that you don't want Chris Carter? He's what you get if Park exceeds expectations. Park is a better baserunner, fielder and has an additional 2 years at 3M per + a very reasonable option in 2020.
G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted February 3, 2017 Posted February 3, 2017 Didn't Clemens account for a massive chunk of the Astros salary one year? Stanton could become a 50% of payroll guy in a few years LOL
Daniel Labude Jays Centre Contributor Posted February 3, 2017 Posted February 3, 2017 So it's basically down to Texas, Toronto of Colorado. Texas seems like the best hope. Colorado would be awesome but I 100% believe they are committed to the idiocy of the Desmond experiment. Toronto would be awesome too but I don't feel like that's where the team wants to put money right now. Are we still trying to get a 1B?
BTS Community Moderator Posted February 3, 2017 Posted February 3, 2017 Park is a better baserunner, fielder and has an additional 2 years at 3M per + a very reasonable option in 2020. We have no idea whether he's a better baserunner or fielder, but he's almost certainly a worse hitter. I just can't make sense of wanting him at 2/6 more than Carter at 1/4.

Park was a positive in both those areas last year (fielding was a limited sample so I'll give you that) but Carter has been a negative baserunner and fielder every year in the league and is trending downwards. I doubt the Jays sign either because of the platoon issue that I mentioned before.
burlingtonbandit Old-Timey Member Posted February 3, 2017 Posted February 3, 2017 I think they need a LF way more than a 1st baseman. Pearce is a really good defender at 1st so might as well use him there full time.
G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted February 3, 2017 Posted February 3, 2017 There's zero risk signing Carter for what he's going to have to accept now

I think you're aware of how silly it is to say that 30-year old 1B A is better at baserunning and defense than 30-year old 1B B based on 206 innings of defensive metrics and 62 games of baserunning data (for a guy who never gets on base). There's so little information that it's worse than no information, because it's worthless, but leads to baseless statements.

Either way i don't see how Toronto Does not upgrade on Smoak.

Park is like, 5 inches shorter and 40 pounds lighter than Carter. He's probably a bit faster and he probably has a bit more range. Common cents
Dr. Dinger Old-Timey Member Posted February 3, 2017 Posted February 3, 2017 We aren't we in on Napoli?

Sure Park doesn't have a "track record" but he's faster than Carter and has performed better. If you ask a bunch of MLB people I'm sure they'd all say Park was better at both.
burlingtonbandit Old-Timey Member Posted February 3, 2017 Posted February 3, 2017 Only one left is Pagan Really wanted Moss. I guess they could still trade for one during the season. At this point I'd rather Pompey than any one of Smoak, Carter, Napoli
Laika Community Moderator Posted February 3, 2017 Posted February 3, 2017 We aren't we in on Napoli? It seems like Toronto only has maybe $5m left in payroll. Enough for one 25 man roster worthy relief pitcher, and that's about it.

Laika Community Moderator Posted February 3, 2017 Posted February 3, 2017 There you go. No reason to continue. You're making a poor argument here, BTS. Let's say you are a GM. You can sign Carter or Park. Say the money is the same and wOBA projections are the same. Who will be better in terms of baserunning and defense? You have to pick one.

Say the money is the same and wOBA projections are the same. Who will be better in terms of baserunning and defense? You have to pick one. I'm arguing against the idea that Park's defense and baserunning are good enough to make him desireable at 3M when Carter is not desireable at 4M, despite Carter likely being better offensively. I don't think that position makes sense. Gun to my head, I'll assume Park is a run or two better at both, but we definitely don't know that, and I think defense and baserunning are terrible justifications for saying you'd love Park at 3M and want no part of Carter at 4M.
Laika Community Moderator Posted February 3, 2017 Posted February 3, 2017 I find it impossible to believe the budget is that tightly restricted. Well there's a trade deadline account but that's best left untouched until the trade deadline
Jimcanuck Old-Timey Member Posted February 3, 2017 Posted February 3, 2017 Well there's a trade deadline account but that's best left untouched until the trade deadline Yes, keep some money for a Liriano type deal, a bad contract and a couple of good prospects
intentional wok Old-Timey Member Posted February 3, 2017 Author Posted February 3, 2017 I find it impossible to believe the budget is that tightly restricted. I wonder if the FO is holding out to see which position between LF and 1B requires attention. If Pearce is LF-capable, then 1B will be addressed during the season. If he's not, then he'll be planted at 1B and an OF will be acquired. There's only one major positional hole in the batting order, but it's going to take some time to determine which position it actually is. Until then, there are warm bodies capable of covering those positions who shouldn't be too much of an anchor given the considerable talent elsewhere on the field.
CrackerJack Verified Member Posted February 3, 2017 Posted February 3, 2017 I find it impossible to believe the budget is that tightly restricted. yeah, the way the awkward Atkins press conference played out, it sounds like Edward Rogers forced Shatkins' hand in bringing Bautista back...probably with the assurance that more funds (than initially budgeted) would be made available to the FO during the season.

RealAccountant Old-Timey Member Posted February 4, 2017 Posted February 4, 2017 Blevins + Salas = 9M in payroll for Mets who are up against their budget ceiling. Bruce - Smoak = +9M for Mets. Bruce to Blue Jays in 3, 2, 1... If you look at what we got and what the better relievers are going for, it makes you wonder how serious this administration is about winning.
