the upgrade is probably $4M, not 8M.

He's probably including Smoak's salary in that calculation, but IMO that's a sunk cost. Personally I think upgrading from Smoak to Carter is a no-brainer and I don't think the budget is as finite as people believe. All reasonable upgrades should be considered.

On the other hand, Carter is a career 112 wRC+ hitter projected at 106, and Smoak is a career 95 wRC+ hitter projected at 93, and the upgrade is probably $4M, not 8M.

Jease that seems nuts that he would only get 4M. He could do some Damage at the Dome.

I really doubt Carter wants to go to Japan. I think he'd take less money to stay in MLB.

Is there even 5M for him in Japan? I can't believe he can't get close to that in MLB. He's a 110 wRC+ hitter who can play everyday and isn't a tire fire defensively. That has value to at least half a dozen teams right now.

I don't think Pearce in LF is something this FO wants. It doesn't make sense to sign Carter now and have Pearce in LF when there were better options available earlier in FA. If that was their plan, they would have signed someone better I have to think.

Unless they didn't realize that someone like Carter would be available for less than what Justin Smoak makes. And really, it just doesn't make sense to roster Smoak when a clear 1-win upgrade is probably available for 4M or so. It's not ideal, but:

LF - Pearce

1B - Carter

Bench - Carrera/Upton

Looks a lot better to me than

1B - Pearce

LF - Carrera/Upton

Bench - Smoak, Carrera/Upton

Not to mention you know Gib is going to batting Carrera Lead off

Coghlan/Upton in LF, Pearce at 1st. Coghlan is likely even cheaper than Carter at this point and is a year removed from a 3.3 WAR season. Carter doesn't have that upside.

Hitting vs LHP is included in those projections though and the Jays don't need him vs LHP, also Smoak would barely be getting PA vs Lefties. Unless you are sitting Pillar for Upton vs LHP and shifting Pearce to LF, but then the loss of defence in 3 positions kills the upgrade on offence.

vs LHP

1B Pearce

LF Upton

RF Bautista

DH Morales

The 8 Million comes from dumping Smoak's $4 Million which also doesn't include the salary next year. I really wanted an upgrade over Smoak and thought Moss was perfect, but Carter is not the answer IMO.

Carlos Martinez signed a 5 year $51 Million extension.

Would you sign Stroman or Sanchez to that same deal? Each of them have an additional year of control so it isn't the perfect comparison.

Probably, but no way Boras would agree to that.

That's fine if everyone is healthy. I think it comes down to two questions: is Smoak going to be on the roster? Is Carter 4M more valuable than Smoak? If the answer to both of those questions is yes, then Carter makes sense.

I think "Is Pearce legitimately okay to play the outfield" should be a question worth considering too. Whether or not it should be a factor in upgrading Smoak is debatable, but I think it's reasonable to toss around.

But to answer your question, I think Carter is worth eating Smoak's salary. Sure, it looks bad to the bosses when you immediately scrap a $4M investment, but just in terms of paying for wins... Carter's salary + the sunk cost probably gets to $8-9M total. That's worth a win above replacement even if the invoice is convoluted.

The question is who the f*** is beating the Indians?

Dodgers, Cubs, Nationals, Red Sox, Astros (and Indians as well) all project to win 90+ games (with the Giants at 88). So one of those teams, probably.

Lol 1 year deal for a way better reliver than what we got. If i didn't know any better, I'd say Shapiro is still working for Cleveland, first his total screw up of the Edwin Situation ensures Cleveland gets a big bat, then he doesn't sign Logan, signs an inferior reliever

Give me a f***ing break.

I would have thought he would get a MLB contract.

Not a lot of teams want a no-power, poor defensive OF--which is why Coghlan only got a minor league deal. Jays can do better than this..
