Dr. Dinger Old-Timey Member Posted January 3, 2017 Posted January 3, 2017 bart 12:23 Where do you stand on Rowdy Tellez? Despite putting up great numbers he is ranked quite low on prospect lists and there is a popular opinion that his bat won't translate to the majors. Eric A Longenhagen 12:24 I'm skeptical because we all saw him struggle with good pitching for six weeks last fall but I've talked to scouts who saw him this year and they've said he's improved. I think Jays fans are allowed to be cautiously optimistic that they might have a big league contributor coming up to replace the power they've lost but this isn't a player I'm targeting in dynasty leagues or anything like that.
King Old-Timey Member Posted January 3, 2017 Author Posted January 3, 2017 Why do we care if he struckout a few times against 100 MPH fastballs in the AFL over a year ago? He had a 127 wRC+ over a ~90 PA sample. And then went on to absolutely slug AA the next season. Law and Longenhagen both keep going back to the 2015 AFL whenever they are asked about Tellez.

Ultimately there is a big talent difference between AA and MLB, that's what it comes down to. I'm rooting for Tellez but there will probably be a few rough years of adjustment, if he ever becomes an impact hitter. He's like A.J. Reed but without the hype. Guys can mash in AA and completely fall apart against better pitching if there's an exploit in the swing, and there have been many naysayers who doubt Tellez' swing against MLB pitching.

I'm fine with that assessment, but it's not what my post was about. I know that there are valid concerns about Tellez, but his "struggles" in the AFL over a year ago are not one of them. And it just so happens this is the argument Law (mainly) and Longenhagen keep going back to the most.
King Old-Timey Member Posted January 3, 2017 Author Posted January 3, 2017 This discussion has been had before. Walligator: Rowdy Tellez is up to .295/.387/.499 after a brutal start to the season. He is walking almost 13% of the time, while only striking out 18% (with 16 homers to boot). He is just 21 years young. While he undoubtedly has a “bad body”, and is likely to be a DH, is there nothing to like in his profile, given his age and inexperience at the level? Admittedly, I’ve only scouted his stat line–is he someone that you have to watch in person to pick out his flaws? I believe you said he has a long swing or one that can’t handle high velocity…is there any way he can make it work? His slash line at his age just seems excellent, and I would think some AA pitchers can hit the mid to high 90’s…does Rowdy have a chance at a big league future? Klaw: New Hampshire’s a good place for LH power – remember Eric Thames – and no, he’s not facing mid- to high-90s that often. I think good pitching will eat Tellez alive, like it did in the AFL. Another non prospect. Hum... KLaw disses him. Promising. Exact same question was asked in the BP chat with Crawford. He wasn't quite as doom and gloom but did say his ceiling is an average DH because the no glove bad body type almost never works out (and that he hopes he is wrong). I was wondering what happened that made Keith think Tellez can't hit advanced pitching but now we know. Tellez struckout against a pitcher throwing heat in the Arizona Fall League while Keith Law was in attendance, and now he's tripling down on this opinion. For a relatively smart guy Law says some incredibly dumb things. The reason to be skpetical of Thames in NH at the time was because of his age and advanced experience, not because of it being friendly to LHH, after all Thames mashed in Vegas and we know the things he's doing in Korea. Tellez OTOH is putting up one of the best age relative hitting seasons ever in the Eastern League. I don't see how a 23 1/2 yo hitter out of college is even remotely comparable to a 21 yo out of high school, statistically or using more subjective measures. This is KLaw's m.o. to at T. If the guy wasn't so full of himself he might actually stop repeating this mistake. The self defeating arrogance is stunning. Tellez went .293/.352/.488 (127 wRC+) in the AFL Wow he's complete and utter garbage. Was that at 20 years old as well. Washed up. He was eaten alive. Out almost 65% of the time? Garbage prospect
Brownie19 Old-Timey Member Posted January 3, 2017 Posted January 3, 2017 It will be interesting to see if his new diet can somewhat eliminate the "bad body" rep. Seems like one of the easiest flaws a prospect could eliminate.

Strike out a lot but when he does connect the ball goes far.

Dr. Dinger Old-Timey Member Posted January 3, 2017 Posted January 3, 2017 I remember hearing about holes in Anthony Rizzo's swing right around the time San Diego gave up on him. Obviously that would be a dream outcome, but Tellez' AA numbers are comparable.

He seems to understand his swing and tries to cut it down with 2 strikes. He honestly could be someone who would really benefit from playing alongside (and talking with) Josh Donaldson on a regular basis.
Boxcar Old-Timey Member Posted January 3, 2017 Posted January 3, 2017 Scouts swing and miss on guys like Tellez all the time, because they seem to think that they are qualified physicians or something. They will slobber all over a guy like Buxton and then s*** on someone like Greg Bird. A guy can be a good player without looking like Usain Bolt. Amazing.

Steamer projects Bird for essentially the same line as Encarnacion. http://www.fangraphs.com/projections.aspx?pos=all&stats=bat&type=steamer&team=0&lg=all&players=0&sort=22,d

Can we please trade for him already?
Brownie19 Old-Timey Member Posted January 3, 2017 Posted January 3, 2017 Tellez is listed at 6'4, 220 lbs. I realise those are often wrong, but Schwarber is listed at 6'0 235 lbs and I don't hear many complaining about how fat he is.
TholesWeirdEye Verified Member Posted January 3, 2017 Posted January 3, 2017 I heard he's going to be like Carlos Pena.
Ray Verified Member Posted January 3, 2017 Posted January 3, 2017 Yoan Moncada plays good defense in a premium position, has top grade speed, and also has the body of a greek god. He can post 30% K rates and scouts will be high on him until the end of time. Tellez will be fine. He's a guy who plays up to his level. I think he'll have a rocky start in AAA/MLB, but once he adjusts he'll be fine.
Jimcanuck Old-Timey Member Posted January 4, 2017 Posted January 4, 2017 Rob Deer. Never heard that name in a while. Kingman >>> Deer Anyway, what's the difference between AA and AAA pitching - better secondaries, pitch sequence, and a tad better control in AAA?
KingKat Old-Timey Member Posted January 4, 2017 Posted January 4, 2017 Kingman >>> Deer Anyway, what's the difference between AA and AAA pitching - better secondaries, pitch sequence, and a tad better control in AAA? More veterans and by extension more off speed stuff. It's a good test but it's not as significant as the jump to AA.

Because scouts are pussies and it makes them uncomfortable to put fat kids high on their lists. Most scouts are too busy literally jacking off at the kids who look like athletes to pay attention to the fat ones, the short ones and the discipline/control guys.

TwistedLogic Old-Timey Member Posted January 4, 2017 Posted January 4, 2017 With the second overall pick in the 2014 draft, the Miami Marlols passed over Rodon and Schwarber for Tyler Kolkek. Gotta have that 5.0 BB/9 heat for your intraqsquad spring training games to see if the Rowdy Tellez-like shitters in your organization can connect with a manly man's pitch.

And the Astros took Brady Aiken...uggh. Is this the year that Carlos Rodon takes over the world? What a rotation the White Sox would have had if they kept Sale. Also - we should trade for Nate Jones. Great arm, great contract.
Brownie19 Old-Timey Member Posted January 4, 2017 Posted January 4, 2017 So I had to look up who was the 1st overall pick in 2014...which lead me to remember that we took Hoffman over Conforto and Pentecost over Trea Turner. So screw you Twisted for bringing this up.

Dick_Pole Old-Timey Member Posted January 4, 2017 Posted January 4, 2017 I get the feeling that there is a lot of fat kids posting in this thread. If I was a scout, I'd only go for the kids that looked like Brett Lawrie or better....while wolfing down my stadium dog.
