GodDonaldson Verified Member Posted December 23, 2016 Posted December 23, 2016 Just wondering.. With not signing their core players.. I really think he is forcing this team into rebuild mode.. That's why he fired AA who made this team as a contender.
John_Havok Old-Timey Member Posted December 23, 2016 Posted December 23, 2016 Better than having a core of a bunch of 33-40 year olds in 2 years
Jimcanuck Old-Timey Member Posted December 23, 2016 Posted December 23, 2016 Of course they are, doing what they can to convert declining assets into prospect capital. But not a true rebuild, with the payroll parameters they will be able to field a mediocre .500 team for a few years while the high performance team in Dunedin develops elite young talent.
RealAccountant Old-Timey Member Posted December 23, 2016 Posted December 23, 2016 No Shapiro is simply overrated
saskjayfan Old-Timey Member Posted December 23, 2016 Posted December 23, 2016 Better than having a core of 5 35-40 year olds in 2 years And who would those 5 be? Edwin could have been had for 3 years. Bats could be had for 2 maybe 1 year. We just wasted the last 2 years of josh Donaldson.

RealAccountant Old-Timey Member Posted December 23, 2016 Posted December 23, 2016 For f***s Sakes do something Shapiro
Jimcanuck Old-Timey Member Posted December 23, 2016 Posted December 23, 2016 We signed a different DH to an expensive long term deal, so it doesn't really fit the rebuild narrative. 3/33 is expensive, and long term??
RealAccountant Old-Timey Member Posted December 23, 2016 Posted December 23, 2016 It's understandable if EE and Jose are not part of the plan but time to get on the f***ing plan. We aren't better than we were last year and a team that went to the ALCD ought to be improving itself especially if there is payroll capacity
saskjayfan Old-Timey Member Posted December 23, 2016 Posted December 23, 2016 3/33 is expensive, and long term?? For a guy who's base running makes Edwin look fast and a guy who can't play defense 33 mil is not cheap.
Captain Adama Old-Timey Member Posted December 23, 2016 Posted December 23, 2016 For a guy who's base running makes Edwin look fast and a guy who can't play defense 33 mil is not cheap. He's getting paid to produce 1-1.5 WAR/year. It's inexpensive.

They need to learn how the demand of baseball is rising in Canada..

saskjayfan Old-Timey Member Posted December 23, 2016 Posted December 23, 2016 He's getting paid to produce 1-1.5 WAR/year. It's inexpensive. He's produced 8 wins in his career. He's 34 in the first year of his deal. Everyone else falls off a cliff after the age of 33 except the Guys Shapiro signs
crmr Verified Member Posted December 23, 2016 Posted December 23, 2016 I think this is a good thread. I really think they expected to get Fowler, and underestimated what most other past GM's for the Jays have said, which is that it's not that easy to get guys in Toronto. It was a tough first off season for them, they read the market horribly and I really think, whether planned or not, they should be entering a rebuild immediately. However, they would get run out of town for doing that so they're in a somewhat precarious position. Best hope for this team is that they're awful in the first half next year and can unload some players (they have plenty of assets) Longer term, I'm hoping that Shapiro/Atkins can do a better job of bringing in FA's, which is pretty important to succeed, especially in the AL EAst, given they likely won't be picking dead last every year like some of the better low-budget success stories of late
glory Old-Timey Member Posted December 23, 2016 Posted December 23, 2016 There's not a single thing Shapiro has done that suggests he wants to rebuild. He's added nothing but 30+ year old's to the roster except for Guirrel. He's trying to compete and restock the farm at the same time.
Brownie19 Old-Timey Member Posted December 23, 2016 Posted December 23, 2016 This looks like a thread on reddit. So much f***ing stupid.

Grant77 Old-Timey Member Posted December 23, 2016 Posted December 23, 2016 3/33 is expensive, and long term?? It's probably in or near the top 10% of contracts for both salary and length. Unless I'm way off with those estimates, there's no question that it's expensive and long term. I just put out a factual statement to refute the OP's claims. I don't know why you take issue with that.

BTS Community Moderator Posted December 23, 2016 Posted December 23, 2016 He's already in rebuild mode. You can rebuild and have major leaguers at the same time. Already he's added Harold Ramirez, McGuire and he's about to add 3 more 1st round type guys in the draft. The only question is whether he should be accelerating it or not. I don't know if the Pearces and Mosses of the world are going to be enough to contend. We're sort of in between right now. Yeah. He's a year into his plan to assemble the foundation for a team that can compete perpetually. Accrue as many wins in the present while also assembling farm talent and avoiding rich long-term commitments to players in their in the decline years. There seems to be three main keys to the plan: 1. Build a pipeline of farm talent and keep it - McGuire and Ramirez added via trade - Gurriel added via IFA, as well as several lesser pieces - guys like Zeuch and Bichette in the 2016 draft, and likely three more 1st round picks in 2017 - only very low-end guys given up via trade: Sean Ratcliffe, Hansel Rodriguez, Guadalupe Chavez, Colton Turner 2. Avoid expensive commitments to ageing vets - Price, Encarnacion, and likely Bautista all allowed to walk - nobody with the exception of Gurriel (only 23 years old) acquired with longer than a 3-year financial commitment 3. Supplement the roster with mid-to-low level value free agent signings - Estrada 2/26 - Happ 3/36 - Morales 3/33 - Pearce 2/12 Do everything possible to keep AA's window open, while at the same time laying the foundation for a team that doesn't need a window.
GodDonaldson Verified Member Posted December 23, 2016 Author Posted December 23, 2016 I really think it depends on if they sign Bautista or not.. I really think we really need Bautista in this team because he is our franchise star and a leader in the clubhouse.
TheHurl Site Manager Posted December 23, 2016 Posted December 23, 2016 Ignoring the original poster. I do think the F.O. is aware that signing Donaldson beyond 2018 is a below 50% proposition.
