Grant77 Old-Timey Member Posted December 23, 2016 Posted December 23, 2016 This is a hell of a move by Cleveland, probably the best of the offseason so far.
RealAccountant Old-Timey Member Posted December 23, 2016 Posted December 23, 2016 Pearce is an awesome signing. Not only is he a good baller, he can play multiple positions = very valuable trade bait at the deadline. Yeah he brought in huge assets at the 2016 trade deadline
burlingtonbandit Old-Timey Member Posted December 23, 2016 Posted December 23, 2016 Indians are a damn strong team now, provided their SPs come back healthy. It's fairly obvious Shatkins is working to load up the farm. JB unlikely to be back. Jays 10 games under .500 at the break next season, JD as good as gone. I was looking at this the other day but there really isn't any team that matches up in a trade for Donaldson than the Red Sox or Yankees who are in the division. The Mets and Giants could use a 3rd baseman but don't have the type of prospects that would get it done. All the contenders have a great 3rd baseman already.
Hired Goon Verified Member Posted December 23, 2016 Posted December 23, 2016 Man there is no way in hell Cleveland is paying Edwin $25m at age 37. It's a 3 year deal folks. No way that option is picked up. Good for Edwin. Got a reasonable deal from a team that should be the AL Central winner in 2017. Both sides are probably happy with how it played out. How is Edwin happy? He could have stayed in Toronto with $80 million, and now he gets to live in Fricking Cleveland for $60 million because of some greedy agent.

There is always a market for a MVP type player

Live in Cleveland At the most he will spend a hundred days in a hotel room

fatcowxlive Old-Timey Member Posted December 23, 2016 Posted December 23, 2016 I don't really know why you'd assume incompetence from Kinzer instead of assuming he had a decent handle on the situation and presented the facts to Edwin honestly and let him make up his mind. Why I assume is because Edwin publicly said he wanted to be back and at the end of the winter meetings his agent made a public plea for Toronto to resign him after the report came out that no one was offering more than 3/60, what I'm saying isn't far fetched and isn't something that hasn't happened before..
burlingtonbandit Old-Timey Member Posted December 23, 2016 Posted December 23, 2016 People should be more mad at the FO signing Smoak to an extension than anything. That was truly a terrible move.

The most likely situation, by far, is that Kinzer presented the offer to Edwin, told him it was too early to know if he could do better, and asked Edwin if he wanted to accept now or wait it out. Painting the agent as a villain in this is just looking for a villain to blame because people are upset that Edwin is gone. There's no reason at all to assume that Edwin was misled.
BTS Community Moderator Posted December 23, 2016 Author Posted December 23, 2016 People should be more mad at the FO signing Smoak to an extension than anything. That was truly a terrible move. Well, yeah that move was awful. I don't think it's had any impact on any decisions made though. There's like 30M left in the budget (reportedly).
Jimcanuck Old-Timey Member Posted December 23, 2016 Posted December 23, 2016 People should be more mad at the FO signing Smoak to an extension than anything. That was truly a terrible move. Bad sign, yes. But $4M of $160M or $165M, not a big concern. Smoak is going to return some value, its not $8M of sunk cost.

Lol hey I'm not making anyone as the villain, I'm just calling his agent s***, Edwin turned down more guaranteed money/years and stay at a place he liked (or so he said). He literally did not do his job well

He literally did not do his job well How much does EE want a ring, and does he see a better chance with Cleveland? At the end of the day, it looks like he got the same contract with the Indians that the Jays offered?
PhillyBlueJay Verified Member Posted December 23, 2016 Posted December 23, 2016 Well me for one not too torn up by loss of EE. EE has struggled the last couple of years with many finger injuries and always with a suspect back so at age 34 those hands and back are only going to get worst and take more of a pounding. That is not to say Morales will have injuries also but much easier to swallow 11 million versus 20 million player on the DL. I for one do not think EE will put up the numbers he had in TO while in Cleveland. As of today that is what Cleveland is paying for at this moment in time (40 hrs, 120 RBI's) whereas the Morales signing was an expectation of 25 hr's 80 RBI's but he could do better. Jays need to trade for VMart exchanging Smoak, Biagini, and Pompey.
saskjayfan Old-Timey Member Posted December 23, 2016 Posted December 23, 2016 True. Honestly I think we also just moved on, by the time they came around on the deal we already filled 1B and DH, no place to put him We spent 159 on payroll last year and would still be shy of that if we signed Edwin and Justin smoak prevented this? There's no one left to sign. The jays revenue was through the roof. The revenue difference between a team that makes the playoffs and one that misses by 3 or 4 games is significant

Right but I listened to the agent every time he talked, he went from thinking Edwin will get more than the Jays were offering to willing to settle, but by the time he came back around the report I read said that we pulled the deal off the table. Which makes sense we signed 2 players who play the same position as EE. We moved on faster than expected. So we may never know

Smoak and 2 very good assets for a player whose older and has a more of an extensive injury past.

He literally did not do his job well You're making a complex situation out to be black and white. Edwin was almost certainly provided with an honest assessment of the situation, as well as the risks involved and he opted to role the dice. There's nothing suggesting Kinzer did a bad job here.

You don't know anything about how money could be allocated, $20 not spend on Edwin doesn't mean there's $20 million to spend

BTS Community Moderator Posted December 23, 2016 Author Posted December 23, 2016 Are we even sure that a firm 4/80 with no options was on the table? Have the details of the reported offer been confirmed that specifically?
