jaysfan2014 Old-Timey Member Posted December 23, 2016 Posted December 23, 2016 Cleveland basically has a cake walk to the division title next year and I can't see another team overtaking them in 2018 either. Thats 2/3 of his contract. Detroit is still a threat. There's a good chance Detroit abandons their fire sale plans, as they've made no indication of making trades or cutting payroll outside of the Maybin trade. What Avila meant was that they needed to get younger--it doesn't guarantee they'll sell everyone. And Detroit still has a strong rotation--especially with Verlander, FUlmer, Norris, Boyd, and the chance ZImmermann rebounds.
thatoneguy Old-Timey Member Posted December 23, 2016 Posted December 23, 2016 Shatkins/Rogers getting blasting everywhere unsurprisingly.
jays4life19 Old-Timey Member Posted December 23, 2016 Posted December 23, 2016 Anyways my thoughts are; I would much rather have Morales, Pearce + 1st round pick + cash than Edwin. Good signing for Cleveland but I'm happy with what we got.
jays4life19 Old-Timey Member Posted December 23, 2016 Posted December 23, 2016 From KR: Second correction (apologies): Sources say Edwin with #Indians is three years, $60M, including $5M buyout. Option valued at $25M. Max: $80M. So basically the option won't be picked up.
polar bear Verified Member Posted December 23, 2016 Posted December 23, 2016 Jays and Eddie's agent f***ed this up. Jays went in with a big offer early, knowing that it would get rejected. Kinzler overplayed his hand and rejected. Jays signed Morales right away and couldn't pull their offer to Eddie fast enough. Result. Bye bye Eddie. Bye bye Eddie, and welcome Morales.Pretty sure Shatkins know exactly what they are doing.

Why do I have a feeling Edwin ends up getting dealt after one season like Delgado? No way Cleveland can afford him after 2017, especially if they end up disappointing on attendance or missing the playoffs because someone like Detroit or KC surprises. If they were selling out each night, this deal wouldn't be so dangerous for them...
justafan Verified Member Posted December 23, 2016 Posted December 23, 2016 I am very disappointed. He was a very exciting player to watch. Damn. PS - Don't bring back Joey Bats. This reminds me of the Ottawa Senators keeping Wade redden and giving away Chara. Shatkins/Rogers getting blasting everywhere unsurprisingly.

justafan Verified Member Posted December 23, 2016 Posted December 23, 2016 No, Smoak is irrelevant is all discussions! why? as far as Edwin's concerned, there's a logjam at 1b/dh/slow-footed-benchwarmer when you include the man the front office felt the urgency to lock up for over $8 m.

intentional wok Old-Timey Member Posted December 23, 2016 Posted December 23, 2016 Toronto had the better deal. I'd be pissed at my agent if I were Edwin. Definitely want an extra guaranteed $15M. I think the Blue Jays still should have matched it now if they were willing to pay 80 then. This is really stupid.
glory Old-Timey Member Posted December 23, 2016 Posted December 23, 2016 Man there is no way in hell Cleveland is paying Edwin $25m at age 37. It's a 3 year deal folks. No way that option is picked up. Good for Edwin. Got a reasonable deal from a team that should be the AL Central winner in 2017. Both sides are probably happy with how it played out.

They aren't it's a 20M option with a 5M buyout, so it's a 15M decision

Shapiro set guidelines and is sticking to them. Maintaining discipline and to a plan is how you develop a well rounded team, but not overnight. I like what Shapiro is doing here.
Jimcanuck Old-Timey Member Posted December 23, 2016 Posted December 23, 2016 Indians are a damn strong team now, provided their SPs come back healthy. It's fairly obvious Shatkins is working to load up the farm. JB unlikely to be back. Jays 10 games under .500 at the break next season, JD as good as gone.

John_Havok Old-Timey Member Posted December 23, 2016 Posted December 23, 2016 While it sucks to lose a hitter of EEs caliber from this lineup, at some point you just have to move on. He rejected the jays offer, and they understandably couldn't just sit there for weeks with that offer on the table and not look at other options.
Jonn Old-Timey Member Posted December 23, 2016 Posted December 23, 2016 I'm happy for him, and I know when he comes back to the Toronto he will have a great welcoming I wouldn't be so sure about that

Tell me why they needed to sign Morales in November with all the DH options available?
Jimcanuck Old-Timey Member Posted December 23, 2016 Posted December 23, 2016 Tell me why they needed to sign Morales in November with all the DH options available? Morales is just a warm body for the lineup for a few years. C'mon I can't be the only one that sees Shatkins is focussed on building up the farm as opposed to a contender for 2017?
John_Havok Old-Timey Member Posted December 23, 2016 Posted December 23, 2016 Tell me why they needed to sign Morales in November with all the DH options available? Have no idea why they settled on Morales. I was only pointing out that you can't leave an open offer on the table for long periods of time, especially after it was rejected
RealAccountant Old-Timey Member Posted December 23, 2016 Posted December 23, 2016 Tell me why they needed to sign Morales in November with all the DH options available? They needed to make Smoak look good? A month of Moralesclogging the bases and you will be begging to have Smoak in the lineup
GodDonaldson Verified Member Posted December 23, 2016 Posted December 23, 2016 I think Shapiro and Atkins are two people who are so impatient.. They just signed Morales and Pearce just too quick

No way he stays in Cleveland after 2017--especially if the Indians don't make it to the World Series. They don't exactly have deep pockets--and they're losing Santana after 2017, with nobody in the pipeline to replace him, and they're going to lose Jesus Aguilar in the spring (out of options).
