in the team-polled MVP voting last season, Donaldson received only 2 measly votes ... compared to Edwin's 41. so, yeah, maybe you're on to something about JD?

I think it has more to do with the fact that Edwin had the homers and RBI as opposed to Donaldson being universally disliked. The players are dumb, there's a lot of people who consider Edwin's season to have been a career year despite this being his worst offensive performance since his breakout in 2012, and noticeably so.

There was a reason why 7 of the top 20 pitchers in WPA were relievers. WAR doesn't show the true value of high leverage relievers thats why they are getting paid more. Shapiro even said on the radio the other day the market has finally caught up to what they are worth and before it was a loophole.

WPA also vastly overrates high-leverage relievers. Is there a reason to believe that if Joe Biagini had been put in to save games instead of Osuna, that his performance would have been substantially worse? Note that I'm not saying that I believe Biagini to be on the same level as Osuna, but put him in those situations and suddenly Biagini looks like a 3 win reliever. It's way too context-dependent, which is exactly what WAR tries to eliminate.

I'm hoping that's just Westhead filling in the gaps on his own there.

At this point, with the options available, I'd be ok with Moss and Revere I guess. I don't really want to give up what it would likely cost to get Jarrod Dyson. Hell, I'd rather we just sign Moss and then give Pompey the RF job.

Revere scares me only because Gibbons would bat him lead-off. Other than that, I mean he might be able to bounce back offensively and be an adequate LF option (maybe a 1 WAR type) so it may not be an awful move in isolation, but yeah, I think I'd rather just start Pompey and hope he produces.

The Royals could probably get a 3 WAR season out of Dyson even as a 4th OF, but they have 3 starting OF's and a bunch of 4th OF types. They'll have to make a trade of some sort. Dyson would be such a good fit, but if the Royals want an MLB talent, then it will be hard to find a match. You think they'll take Harold Ramirez? Doesn't strike out and hits for average....that's like a Royals prototype.

Should take quite a bit more than Harold Ramirez. Dyson would be a nice addition although would he hold up for a full season? He's another one of these guys who's very intriguing but you might not want to rely on them as #2 or #3 on your depth chart. Still a good player to acquire obviously.

I've scoured through the KC trade rumours, and there's plenty of talk about them moving him for cheap, but there isn't one example of an ask/need/price et al. I for one have mentioned Harold Ramirez and Reese Mcquire, and others think the ask will be much higher. Man, I'd love to know what they're asking. Sign one of Bats/Moss and acquire Upton, Birds!

Jays new coach is going to be the guy taking all the analytic information and telling Gibby what to do anyway.

I read something along the ticker when I was away on the weekend about Shelton(sp?) and his roles, but I only caught a glimpse... anyone have the deets on his job description?

NVM: Think I found it...

KEEGAN MATHESON DECEMBER 13, 2016, 12:47 PM

Derek Shelton, the Toronto Blue Jays‘ new quality control coach, will help bring together coaching, metrics and advanced scouting for players on an individual level, he told Sportsnet 590 The FAN Tuesday.

“The game has changed where there’s a lot of information coming in from different areas. I think part of my role will be getting that information and breaking it down so it’s more suitable for the players so it’s an easier conversation,” Shelton told Ben Ennis on the Jeff Blair Show.

Shelton, 46, will fill the spot vacated on John Gibbons’ staff by Eric Owens, the Blue Jays’ former assistant hitting coach who was let go following the 2016 season. This is the first time that the Blue Jays have employed a quality control coach.

“There will be some advanced scouting stuff that goes along not only with Brook [Jacoby] but with Gibby, with DeMarlo [Hale], with Pete [Walker], and essentially the whole staff,” Shelton said.

Part of Shelton's goal will be to communicate metrics that are specifically "poignant" to Toronto's players.

Given his experience as a hitting coach, Shelton says he'll be involved on the offensive side as the Blue Jays look to retool a lineup that could be losing impact bats in Edwin Encarnacion, Jose Bautista, and Michael Saunders. Shelton expressed confidence in veteran hitters like Troy Tulowitzki and Josh Donaldson, but is also optimistic when it comes to Toronto's pitching.

"If you're a hitting coach you want to come in here and hit because of the way the ball flies and the atmosphere," Shelton said. "I think the one thing that has changed, and is changing for the better especially if you're a Jays' fan, is the pitching that the Jays have."

After serving as Cleveland's minor-league hitting coordinator from 2003 to 2005, Shelton was promoted, becoming the MLB hitting coach until 2009. He then landed with the Tampa Bay Rays as their hitting coach, where he stayed until he was fired in the final month of the 2016 season.

The current Blue Jays' front office led by Mark Shapiro and Ross Atkins worked closely with Shelton in Cleveland. Shapiro was general manager throughout Shelton's tenure as hitting coach while Atkins rose to director of player development during that time.

Shelton also holds a strong link to Eric Wedge, the former Cleveland manager and current Blue Jays' player development advisor. The two worked together for five years, including Cleveland's 96-win season in 2007 where they lost to the Boston Red Sox in Game 7 of the ALCS. Both were let go by Shapiro following a 2009 season in which Cleveland won just 65 games.

Colorado is asking for an "Adam Eaton" type return for Charlie Blackmon.

Let me see,

Older

Less years of control

Less track record

Career year matches Eaton's average year

Idiots. This pisses me off. Coloardo is a decent fit for us trade wise - yet they appear to be operated by relatives of Dave Stewart FFS.

Where'd you hear that? I just read this last night after midnight.

Per MLBTR...

Rockies GM Jeff Bridich has told center fielder Charlie Blackmon to take any trade rumors involving his name with a “huge grain of salt,” he told reporters, including MLB.com’s Thomas Harding, yesterday. “As the situation was with [Carlos Gonzalez] over the past few years, there are teams that are doing their jobs and doing their due diligence and calling on our guys,” Bridich explained. “But we have never come out and said, ’We want or need to trade Charlie Blackmon.’ I felt like he needed to hear it from me.” The addition of Ian Desmond to the Rockies’ roster only increased speculation that Bridich would look to move one of his left-handed-hitting outfielders, but the Rockies maintain that Desmond will be utilized at first base and no outfield move is on the horizon.

I assume CarGo is the one they would actually try to move. I hope they sign Edwin. Get him as far away from our division as possible.

I wonder what Jordan Patterson would cost, now that the Rockies basically have 4 outfielders not including him.
