The decision on Castillo, in particular, rates as a surprise; both will be available to the highest bidder on the open market. De La Rosa, whose elbow health is in question, was projected at a $3.0MM tab. That was an amply reasonable amount for his talent, particularly considering that there’s another season of control to go, but the team may not have been encouraged by the medical signals it received. Last we checked in, the 27-year-old was undergoing stem cell therapy in an effort to avoid Tommy John surgery. He has previously undergone a UCL replacement in his career, and at this point, a repeat procedure surely would’ve caused him to miss all of the 2017 season. In that event, Arizona would’ve been required to promise him the same rate of pay both for 2017 and 2018, all in the hopes that he’d return (and return to form) in the second of those two years." Of course you wonder how likely it is he needs TJS, but obviously the upside is there. I'd imagine a lot of teams would be all over him, he'd be a nice lower risk (in terms of $$) signing. Maybe you're pissing money away but he has a chance to be a useful starter. If he's healthy, he's certainly worth a look for the rotation.
Grant77 Old-Timey Member Posted December 3, 2016 Posted December 3, 2016 I'd certainly give him a shot as a reliever, but not as a starter.
burlingtonbandit Old-Timey Member Posted December 3, 2016 Posted December 3, 2016 His medicals must be s*** if a bad team didn't want to take a $2 million chance on him.

There's clearly some talent in that arm, and I wouldn't shut the door on him as a starter just yet.
