BTS Community Moderator Posted November 23, 2016 Posted November 23, 2016 Steamer has eaton projected to be a 2.6 win player and you'd trade Sanchez plus for him. Give me a break. Steamer is projecting Eaton as a bad defender which he almost certainly isn't now that he plays a corner. Nobody would take the under on 3.0 wins. But more to the point, what's wrong with you? Nowhere in King's post did he say what he'd do. He listed a bunch of names that would be of interest to Chicago. And he's right. The ask would very likely be Stroman or Sanchez +, if they're even interested in moving Eaton for a SP. I'm not sure why that prompted hostility from you.

On topic but off of Eaton for a minute. Steamer has Pompey at a 95 wRC+ and 1.3 fWAR playing all three positions. Is anyone buying that value? I know he's capable of that and over the 540 PA's they are projecting him for it's not really that great, but he also has the potential to provide greater defensive and baserunning value than what he's projected for.

saskjayfan Old-Timey Member Posted November 23, 2016 Posted November 23, 2016 Did he say he would give up Sanchez plus? (Hint - he did not). he said it would take sanchez and then more to get Eaton. He did not specifically say that he would give up Sanchez plus. Thanks for the correction. I think if the Jays offered Sanchez straight up for Eaton, the Whitesox would take it every day of the week.

I don't think Steamer's saw Pompey play defense last year. That said - if he could post a wRC+ of 95, I suspect he'd bring a lot of value to the team simply by running the bases well. If he could straighten out his defense, he could be Ender Inciarte lite. It's just such a risk to rely on him as a starter on this team. I can't see them doing that and suspect it would take an injury for him to get a real shot.

There was no hostility intended in my post. I hope King has a very pleasant day.

I would really like to know what is going on between the Jays front office and Pompey behind closed doors, because I can't for the life of me understand why they are content to just bounce him around the high minors for 3-4 years without giving him an extended look. I think maybe there are attitude/makeup concerns, maybe some anxiety disorder or something. Even if you think Pompey has been a disappointment thus far in his MLB career (which I don't) his numbers are still better than Ezequiel Carrera. At the very least he should be a perfectly adequate 4th outfielder.

At the very least he should be a perfectly adequate 4th outfielder. When he started 2015 as first choice CF he ended up being dropped down to Triple A then double A, because he wasn't ready mentally. Pompey gets another chance As a direct result Gibby doesn't trust him. For both 2015 and 2016 Pompey was a September call up and was used almost exclusively as a pinch runner, even being pinch hit for a few times instead of letting him take an at bat. Unless there's injuries, or Pompey shows amazing form for Buffalo, it's pointless having him on the 25 man. I've no doubt Gibby would play Barney in the OF above Pompey.

I took some liberal interpretations with his comments and acknowledged this in a subsequent post.
Bobthe4th Old-Timey Member Posted November 23, 2016 Posted November 23, 2016 Even though Pompey didn't have a great 2015 at Triple A, I think he could be at least a reasonable MLB player in the right situation. Unfortunately that situation is probably not with the Jays.

G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted November 27, 2016 Posted November 27, 2016 Sorry if old news MLB Network says Edwin won't sign anywhere until new luxury tax threshold has been set
G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted November 27, 2016 Posted November 27, 2016 I wonder what teams he's considering? Thinking Boston must be one
BigBounceyBlueBalls Old-Timey Member Posted November 27, 2016 Posted November 27, 2016 Since the Dodgers are in Financial troubles... Lol good on em! Why not offer Justin Turner a contact along the offer we floated to Edwin maybe less at 18 mill a year and move him to first For the Jays !
BigBounceyBlueBalls Old-Timey Member Posted November 27, 2016 Posted November 27, 2016 Furthermore I do not believe the threshold of 189 should be raised to 200 mil but actually frozen or reduced by the league! Call it the Dumb Dumb Dodgers, stupid Yankee's, I am watching you Boston Rule !!! And instead call for a floor to be imposed in or by year 2 at 60 percent of league average payroll, have it raised every year by 1 percent on a ten year deal ! Likewise set the luxury tax threshold at 180 and raise it by the same one percent on a ten year deal as well !
wamco Verified Member Posted November 27, 2016 Posted November 27, 2016 I concur rummy. All about a level playing field. If not, why bother?

He and JD seem like they would get along. Couple of gamers. Turner could spell him and also play first.
jglicksm Verified Member Posted November 30, 2016 Posted November 30, 2016 The content of what I am about to post disappoints me and surely won't be popular, but here it goes anyway: It looks like EE is about to sign in Houston. Multiple sources are reporting this now on Twitter. While they aren't the "big name" sources like Ken Rosenthall, Jon Heyman, Shi Davidi (he's big in Blue Jay circles at least), etc..., many of these sources are followed by these very people (among 1000's of others), which makes me think that this is more than just a casual rumor. Furthermore, big names have suggested that the Astros are looking to load up on offence. Given that they lost out on Cespedes, EE really seems like the next logical move: Ken Rosenthall tweets yesterday: "One rival exec theorizes #Astros trying to load up on offense so they can trade a young hitter (Springer? Bregman?) for an elite starter." "Source confirms: #Astros made big run at Cespedes, as @Buster_ESPN said. Encarnacion as 1B/DH also would fit. Gurriel could be 1B/DH/LF." I think most of us expected to have to move on from EE, but given recent (yesterday!!!) reports that the Blue Jays were showing Edwin "the most love," this feels like a big let down. I hope I am wrong on this one, but if not, at least he isn't going elsewhere in the AL East.

Jonn Old-Timey Member Posted November 30, 2016 Posted November 30, 2016 I wonder if after Cespedes signed Houston just offered something the Jays wouldn't match. Seems odd shortly after his agent said the Blue Jays were showing him the most love that rumours are suggesting he could sign with the Astros as early as today. If the money was similar you would think Edwin would choose to come back here. It will be interesting to see what the contract looks like. After the Cespedes deal his 4 years 80 million offer looks phenomenal. I thought if any free agent hitter could get 5 years it was Cespedes. The average annual seems about right though.

I think the comments his agent made about the Jays "showing him the most love" were very likely posturing and angling to squeeze every last dollar out of other potential suitors. Any time an agent goes to the media with any comments on a free agent it's safe to assume it's calculated and for the purpose of advancing their clients position and earning potential. RealAccountant Old-Timey Member Posted November 30, 2016 Posted November 30, 2016 Edwin's agent talking about taxes mean He would take a 4 year offer from the Rangers than from Toronto as Texas has no state tax. Either it's the Astros or Rangers though I just can't imagine Rangers making that offer after watching Fielder become what he has
