Abomination Old-Timey Member Posted January 10, 2017 Posted January 10, 2017 Stroman for Dahl pls. We really, REALLY need to keep Stroman and Sanchez. Beyond this coming year, the starting pitching is a problem. Guys on the farm probably won't be ready yet, and if we move Stroman or Sanchez, we'd have to replace 3 starting pitchers through trade or free agency. That's not a good place to be in.

Our OF is just as bad and there's no help in sight. We should have snagged Ivan Nova when we had the chance.
Terminator Old-Timey Member Posted January 10, 2017 Posted January 10, 2017 Why is everyone on Dahl's nuts? Am I missing something?

Brownie19 Old-Timey Member Posted January 10, 2017 Posted January 10, 2017 meh - 5 tool prospect, top 10 overall pick, entering his 23 year old season. .963 OPS and a wRC+ around 145 in AA/AAA last year. It's not like there's nothing to like.
HERPDERP Old-Timey Member Posted January 10, 2017 Posted January 10, 2017 Why is everyone on Dahl's nuts? Am I missing something? what is not to like about a CF that can hit HR and steal bases and play above average CF? At best he can become Ellsbury. At worst he's another Peter Bourjos

Brownie19 Old-Timey Member Posted January 10, 2017 Posted January 10, 2017 Guy had a 273 wRC+ in AAA in 68 PA's. wRC+ of 140 in 332 in AA - I settled on about 145 combined His walk rate spiked last year. He needs to continue that trend and control his K%, but the kid has a bright future. No idea if he's worth Stro straight up, but he's the type of OFer I'd like to get if we're moving Stro....a building block with tons of control. Conforto fits the bill as well.
Terminator Old-Timey Member Posted January 10, 2017 Posted January 10, 2017 The projections don't really like him, he's basically replacement level next season. His minor league numbers are fine but they don't really jump off the page. He was always kind of at best a Top 40ish prospect or so which is fine but it's not like he's some blueblood. Last year he had a solid year in 220 AB's but he still only put up a 111 wRC+. That's pretty good I suppose for a 22 year old. I don't know he seems solid but nothing special. Am I wrong?
Nafro Verified Member Posted January 10, 2017 Posted January 10, 2017 Definitely great news for team Canada if we have Freeman at first for the WBC!
P2F Old-Timey Member Posted January 10, 2017 Posted January 10, 2017 Did Taillon already opt out of the WBC?
L54 Old-Timey Member Posted January 10, 2017 Posted January 10, 2017 Dahl is sexxxy, but let's leave him in Coors so he can be a fantasy monster.
guylaroche5 Verified Member Posted January 10, 2017 Posted January 10, 2017 Would Stroman for Dahl straight up work? I'm not sure who would have to kick in more as Stroman has ML experience but he's heading into arbitration where as Dahl will be dirt cheap for a while
Terminator Old-Timey Member Posted January 10, 2017 Posted January 10, 2017 What do you guys think of Steamer projecting Dahl to be a replacement level player next season?
guylaroche5 Verified Member Posted January 10, 2017 Posted January 10, 2017 What do you guys think of Steamer projecting Dahl to be a replacement level player next season? Isn't that because he has no prior MLB experience so steamer just assumes the worst? I feel like all rookies are treated this way except super prospects like Bryant although for all I know his first year projections could have been close to replacement level.
HERPDERP Old-Timey Member Posted January 10, 2017 Posted January 10, 2017 is steamer even reliable when it comes to players with little track record in the majors? There's probably so much noise in his 2016 numbers
Abomination Old-Timey Member Posted January 10, 2017 Posted January 10, 2017 But the OF now is as bad as the rotation might be in a year with no Stroman. True, but there's guys available like Moss who could be signed at a likely discount for the outfield (not to mention Bautista still) and produce adequately. Outside of Tyson Ross (who's a bit of an injury risk himself), the other remaining starting pitchers are either puke inducing or made of expensive glass.

You could probably get Jason Hammel for like 1 year $8M right now. He's projected to provide 1.3 WAR more than Moss is...
Abomination Old-Timey Member Posted January 10, 2017 Posted January 10, 2017 You could probably get Jason Hammel for like 1 year $8M right now. He's projected to provide 1.3 WAR more than Moss is... I forgot about Hammel, he could be passable too. As for Moss, I think the projections are for him playing 1B where the defensive metrics don't like him. In the outfield he's average to maybe slightly above average. Changing that, and the projected WAR is probably about the same as Hammel.

Nafro Verified Member Posted January 10, 2017 Posted January 10, 2017 Did Taillon already opt out of the WBC? I can't answer that, I just saw the note about Freeman likely playing for Canada in the Rotoworld feed.
BTS Community Moderator Posted January 10, 2017 Author Posted January 10, 2017 Apparently the Mariners were willing to give Seth Smith away to anyone who wanted to pay him, before settling on Gallardo when nobody would take Smith on. I have a hard time believing that Toronto has 30M in payroll space if they couldn't find 7M for Smith.

There's probably something in the underlying medicals, etc that we don't know about.

Abomination Old-Timey Member Posted January 10, 2017 Posted January 10, 2017 True but other teams don't have 0 WAR projected for their corner outfield either. There's 3 or 4 teams with less projected from both their corner outfielders than us, and more with poor projections in one of the two spots. There's plenty of need, and no one bit. There's more to it, has to be.
Terminator Old-Timey Member Posted January 10, 2017 Posted January 10, 2017 Why would you take Smith now when you still have a few months to trade from someone better? Once you acquire Smith, you have to play him and you can probably do better in the trade market. And if you can't, it's such a small opportunity cost to miss out on Smith. He's probably 1 WAR next year. We aren't running out of time but we are running out of options. The Free Agent market is pretty pathetic at this point and I don't know who is on the trade market but it's tough because we don't have depth to trade at any position right now. I imagine whenever we approach teams about trades for OFers they inquire on one of our starters. But we only have 5 with little to no depth and next year we only have 3. We need two OFers and offense. Smith isn't a great OFer anymore but he can still hit. He bats lefty which also works well for us. He's got a reasonable contract and it wouldn't preclude us from acquiring another OF as we need two.

And talk of the asking price on McCutchen. Brunt when asked whether these developments could be Bautista-related or other - "I would say other".
