Are you insane? Martin s*** the bed once again, not too mention most of the season. I'll take Bautista back in a heartbeat.

At least Martin provides defensive value. Any offense he provides is just a bonus.

Bautista isn't nearly the same hitter that he used to be and is an embarrassment out in the field. His attitude is just icing on the cake.

Its easy to make fun of Bautista for it but the shaking in his boots meme was taken out of context. He was asked about the rookie starter and he said "He'll be shaking in his boots more than we are. It could go either way." Thats definitely not as bad as just, "He'll be shaking in his boots."

Everything old Turftoe says is taken of contex seemingly, the guy should just maybe say nothing, and

He may just come across more likable

I have a problem with people looking at framing numbers and extrapolating the run values to WAR to comment on a catcher's financial market value. Teams have shown that they're willing to pay for offense and some aspects of catcher defense, but nobody is paying money for framing. They're certainly not paying for it at $8M per 10 runs, like they are for other quantifiable skills. There's no way Martin gets 3/60 on the market this offseason, even though his framing suggests that he should, for the same reason that Eric Kratz wasn't worth $100M.

Er I think that goes without saying, offence pays defence doesn't. If Pillar was a free agent today, I'm willing to bet that Ian Desmond gets WAY more than him, despite overall (according to fWAR, so take it how you want to) providing the same value.

Yup, he also said they'll look at tape, etc... media cherry picked that phrase and ran with it.

he still was pretty definitive in his statement, like it was 100% guaranteed he would be nervous.

He could've been a lot more neutral and said, "If Merritt is pretty nervous about today's start, we need to capitalize because it might be our only shot"

Write a book, man.

You're right that teams pays less for defense than they do offense. I think most of that is that defense is much harder to bank on long term. Defense does pay though, as opposed to pitch framing which teams don't really seem to want to pay for at all.

I believe Nox, Cyborg and North would all beg to differ? I think? :P

Can we start paying for this? I miss Jose Molina. Perez was a product of Shapiro's system and he's an elite framer this year (I think better than Martin too), I want one as a backup, because if we're not getting offence off the bench might as well get defence from that catcher's slot. Jason Castro is the best framer I think in the FA market right?

I don't see what anyone would disagree with. I'm not saying that framing is unimportant, I'm saying that nobody is paying sticker price for those runs. And they aren't.

I'm sure they are, the ones with some thump in the bat. Back-ups would likely get more money than others as well, but not as much as the higher tiered catchers, I'm just assuming here, seeing as all those 3 guys I mentioned above, have said it in the past.

If that were the case Tyler Flowers would have gotten like 5/50 last offseason instead of 2/5 and Jason Castro would be on the verge of signing a lucrative long-term deal.

They can't hit worth a lick... that's why I said back-ups would make a little more than other back-ups without the skillset... I'm just spitballing here, man. That's why I brought up Nox/North and Cyborg... ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

If he comes back you think there's any chance he isn't in RF? I can see him pulling a George Bell and making an issue if it.

Kiss my purple butt!!!

As a DH absolutely.

That's the real wild card here. Would Bautista be content with just DHing? Would the team have the stones to not let him call his shots.

I really think the Bautista ship has sailed.

With his ego, there is no way he would accept an QO,100%

We don't care if he accepts or not. If he accepts, he has a season to prove he's worth a short/big contract. If he doesn't accept, we get the conditional pick.

Bautista will have very little leverage this off season to force any team to allow him to play in RF again. Maybe the injuries this year effected his mobility and given the chance at the beginning of next season he could prove himself.

I would give him the QO. If he accepts force him to a DH/1B only.

Ummm the first round pick potential lol. Plus on a one year contract I will take my chances you can get a good year from him. He will 100% be offered the QO. Zero hesitation.

Dont confuse them with facts...

Exactly. This is JD and Tulos team now. You groundwork guys want to stay and play, in the words of Too Short "get in where you in".

I would definitely give him the QO, I just don't know how well "forcing" him into a role would work. On a new team, with a clean slate, I think this would be a lot easier to implement.

If he still wants to play RF, I think he would try and draw on his clout with this organization to spend a lot of time there.
