harvey16 Verified Member Posted September 25, 2016 Posted September 25, 2016 Who is your opinion will get the bigger contract? What do you think each player will sign for? I personally think Edwin will get the better deal because of the season he is having. I could see Edwin getting 4/90 or even 5/100. I don't see Bautista getting more then a 3 year deal. 3/70 I think is his absolute ceiling!
UKBlueJaysFan Verified Member Posted September 25, 2016 Posted September 25, 2016 EE will def get the better contract. As much as I love Joey Bats, he said he won't decline but he has this season. I appreciate he has had injuries if I was Shatkins though I'd be locking up EE over JB. We won when JB was out of the lineup so not as concerned with him leaving than Edwin.
Bobthe4th Old-Timey Member Posted September 25, 2016 Posted September 25, 2016 It only takes one team to overpay, I think Edwin gets 4/100 with a fifth option year with a buyout. He should have more than one team that will offer 3 or 4 year deals @ $20m per year.
Bobthe4th Old-Timey Member Posted September 25, 2016 Posted September 25, 2016 If Jose has a good end to the season (hopefully including a deep playoff run) he'll probably manage to get a 3/75 deal from someone like the Astros.
L54 Old-Timey Member Posted September 25, 2016 Posted September 25, 2016 Edwin will get more guaranteed money
jaysfan2014 Old-Timey Member Posted September 25, 2016 Posted September 25, 2016 What a dumb question. Obvious it's Edwin--Bautista won't get anything close to the $30M/year he wanted earlier this year. And I expect one or both to be resigned by the Jays..
Maahfaace Verified Member Posted September 25, 2016 Posted September 25, 2016 It's highly unlikely Bats will get more than 20 million a year, especially if the jays QO him. I wouldn't be surprised at all to see him being one of the FA that sits stubbornly on the sidelines waiting for what he thinks he "deserves", while the season begins without him.

With the poor free agency class I don't think you can rule it out for a 3 year or less deal. But think you're right about your second point and there's a chance he ends up signing a Ian Desmond type deal when it becomes clear no one would match his own valuation of himself.
Spanky99 Old-Timey Member Posted September 25, 2016 Posted September 25, 2016 Both get offered a QO from the Jays... Bautista declines and signs a 3 year deal between 16/19 million, depends on the demand, FA is barren he'll get paid well all things considered. EE declines and signs here at 17/18 per, for 4/5 years.

If that's the best Jose can do, I would take a guess that his ego is big enough to accept the QO and try to deliver a big season next year to up his value. I can also see him doing a Cespedes-type of deal, for much less money of course.

Dick_Pole Old-Timey Member Posted September 25, 2016 Posted September 25, 2016 You think he'd risk it at 37? Only he knows for sure, but if you were to line up a bunch of 37 year old players with approximately the same skill level, I would choose him as the most likely to take that course of action.
John_Havok Old-Timey Member Posted September 25, 2016 Posted September 25, 2016 I doubt either guy gets more than 3 years guaranteed, Edwin maybe 4 tops. Teams are alot smarter now when it comes to aging players in the mid to upper 30s that aren't especially athletic anymore (like Edwin) or are still athletic but can't play defense for s*** anymore (bautista). Both are 1b/DH types now though you could still toss Jose out in RF occasionally for flexibility...I'd say 3 years 54m would be as high as I would go, and I'd much rather see 3/48 or something close to it... Ortiz is pretty much the benchmark for Edwin and since his age 34 season he's been between 13 and 16 million Per year, and all on short term deals and options. Beltran wouod be the comparable for Jose amd his recent 3/45 deal,he was 36 when he signed it, so there's that I honestly think even 20 million AAV is a pipe dream for both guys
burlingtonbandit Old-Timey Member Posted September 25, 2016 Posted September 25, 2016 Edwin I think its quite obvious. If Bautista can finish the season like has the last week and has a good postseason run then I think he can make up a good chunk of the money back.

The FA market sucks and there is a ton of money in baseball. DD can open the wallet since the Red Sox have so much cheap talent already and I think thats what he does.

glory Old-Timey Member Posted September 25, 2016 Posted September 25, 2016 Edwin's younger and plays 1B well enough to be an option for an NL team as well. He'll get more money and the longer deal. Bautista's case is interesting. He's a s*** defensive player now, will be 36 next season, coming off his worst season in 8 years, with two separate stints on the DL for lower body injuries. Will a team give up a draft pick and give him the type of contract his ego would be able to live with? Maybe, but it's not the lock that Edwin's case is.

I know it was a different GM at the time, but still they didn't even give their franchise poster boy that kind if money, so I doubt they do it for Edwin

He'll outbid the next higher bidder by $50m if he has the resources to do it.

I mean look how much they gave Price last year.
UKBlueJaysFan Verified Member Posted September 25, 2016 Posted September 25, 2016 Bautista's problem is he thinks he can be the player he was 5 years ago. Not gonna happen. Arm is gone so you're not going to pay 25m a season for a DH. . I can see the Jays keeping EE as I believe he wants to stay and would be more willing to negotiate where as JB will hold out.
Zaun of the Dead Verified Member Posted September 25, 2016 Posted September 25, 2016 I think we'll sign Bats. Edwin will get more money obviously with a different team. Probably a division rival or in the NL.
CBlake Verified Member Posted September 25, 2016 Posted September 25, 2016 At one point in time, an aging slugger like Jose would seriously be considering Japan. For something that was happening regularly, when was the last time an aging star headed over to land of the rising sun? It has me scratching my head.
burlingtonbandit Old-Timey Member Posted September 25, 2016 Posted September 25, 2016 Bats finally looks healthy and has been a machine at the plate lately. I think he rebuilds some of his value.

Andruw Jones is the most recent one I can think of.
admin Site Manager Posted September 26, 2016 Posted September 26, 2016 Someone will probably overpay for EE unfortunately. I keep going back to the fact that David Ortiz is getting paid $16M and is a very similar player. Jose could go on a tear here and into the playoffs and that could change everyone's opinion of him.

I think teams are going to very hesitant with Jb just due to Injuries.... I can see the Sox trading one of their many young hitters for some pitching help and Adding EE for a high cost.
